Get a taxi at Don Muang International Airport, Bangkok
There are several ways to catch a taxi into town from the airport. Be sure to only take a metered taxi. All Bangkok taxis are supposed to have meters, but some are mysteriously missing theirs. My experience is that meterless taxis verbally quote a lot in their favor. The minimum flag down fare is 35 baht for 2 km with additional charges for time and distance. As you first walk out of BKK airport customs, they'll be a taxi counter. WALK RIGHT PAST IT. They seem to want an exorbitant amount for a ride to town. Also avoid touts walking up to you offering taxi services. There's some risk using them. Instead walk out to the curb. They'll be a taxi stand. They ask a surcharge of 50 baht, but the taxi will use the meter for the ride to town and it's safe. They'll also be other visitors waiting there too, who you might ask to share the taxi. If you want to save the 50 baht, go upstairs to departures and grab a taxi just dropping someone off. They'll be happy to get a fare back to town.
The ride to town is about 200-300 baht depending on destination and assuming no traffic. Bangkok traffic is killer so factor that in accordingly. The driver will ask you if you want to take the toll expressway, you pay for this. It's worth taking the expressway to save time and money. The tolls are about 60 baht max or less depending on your exit point. You can get the toll receipts.
If your driver seems honest please give him a nice tip! I like to encourage good behavior. Taxis are plentiful in Bangkok, I recently read that there are 10,000 cars on the road every night looking for fares. I personally always try to get a taxi that's driving by, they seem a little more honest than drivers standing around wanting to cut a deal with you. When you go out for the day, get a taxi card from where you're staying with your hotel address written in Thai.
Most taxi drivers only understand Thai. Also get the hotel staff to write down your taxi destinations in Thai for you too.
