1,200 hit by job scams

BANGKOK: -- More than 1,200 workers seeking overseas jobs have fallen victim to placement scams in the past nine months, losing around Bt69 million, the Employment Department says.

Its chief, Phairoj Suksamrit, says the average job seeker loses Bt53,000. The department has managed to recoup about half of the total money stolen in the ninemonth period.

From December last year the most applications for overseas work are for South Korea with more than 5,207.

Other popular work spots are Taiwan, with 3,100plus applications and Israel, with more than 2,100.

In the past five years South Korea is the labour importer with more than 149,300 workers from Thailand going there. The other big importers of labour from this country are Taiwan, Japan, Israel and Qatar.

This has been going on for more than 30 years! When I first worked in Saudi in the late70s, I found out that the employer gave a fee to the agent + employees air fare. The agent then wants a placement fee + airfare from the prospective employee which sometime amounted to one year's salary!
