Hi All,

I have a DLink 2640-T ADSL WiFi router but I want something better. The DLink is generally OK, but it has issues when there are too many torrent connections, and sometimes the web interface doesn't respond. In addition, the web interface is crappy.

Any recommendations? I want the all-in-one because I'd like one device that does all. I love the WRT54-GL with tomato, but it doesn't have a DSL modem and if you attach an external one you have 2 devices again, and controlling the second one is a bit difficult. I have done it, now looking for something simpler.

Ideally I'd like a DSL modem that can run open source firmware.

Thanks for any tips!

Don't know ya budget...
Make a trip to Fortune and visit CISCO
I remember its on the 4/fl, but not 100% sure.

just read your post again and realize you are looking for open source firmware.
Then Cisco is (maybe) not a good recommendation.

I'll post my wish list here in the outside chance you run into such a device in your search:

1. Draft-N Wifi router
2. Gigabit wired router
3. ADSL modem (ADSL 2+ would be nice for future-proofing)

Like nikster, I want an "all-in-one" device. I already have too many wall-wart power plugs and wires running around my desk. Not to mention one less device occupying space on my desk would be nice.

Thanks for the responses so far, will definitely update with findings, but the way it looks like right now is that there is no such device. There seem to be very, very few all in one units. All the higher end devices, gaming routers and the like, come without ADSL modem. I might have to get two after all, e.g. use my current DLink as ADSL modem only and put a WRT54GL on the other end.

I am not dead set on open source, as long as the on-router software is good. I am not in BKK so device name would be nice so I can order it online.

You can set your present ADSL gateway to bridge mode and use a better router that can support higher number of simultaneous connections.

I think the WRT54-GL supports limited number of simultaneous connections, probably less than 64.

wrt54GL does support 4096 connections at once.

I love my WRT54GL with Tomato, but it's shortcoming is it only has a 100 mb switch. I wish they'd upgrade it to 1000. I ended up dropping a Linksys SD2005 switch behind it and now enjoy gigabit LAN.

Concerning problems with torrents, if your computer(s) run Windows, have you tried increasing the limit for half-open outbound TCP connections? (search for a patch if you haven't). It could fix some of your problems.

I am currently using a Draytec Vigor 2820N, It's expensive , no open source software capability, but it does have everything. In addition this is a multi wan router with load balancing and fail over, currently use it for cable (it has an additional wan interface), and ADSL, with cable being the main connection, so I use it only for fail-over, if the cable connection fails, it automatically uses the adsl connection, when the cable is up again, it closes the adsl.

It features Wireless N with multiple ssid's, isolate lan and member, a solid firewall, proper QOS, the only downside is that it doesn't fully support PEAP for wireless security with certificates.

I don't mis the ability to run open source router software like dd-wrt, as the factory installed firmware does everything I would want to.

You might want to check out the dd-wrt site, and see their supported devices list, to see if something of interest shows up there. I did use the dd-wrt software on both the linksys wrt54 and asus that I used before.
