We need to take MIL to an eye specialist as she is losing her sight and we want to see if it is something operable like cataracts. The nearest big hospital would probably be in Udon Thani. Does anyone have any experience of a good doctor there?

While this may not be the best time but I have been going to the Ruttin Eye Hospital in Bangkok for 3 years. I had Cataract surgery there last year, The Hospital is as good if not better than any eye hospital in the states.

Excellent English, Price is not out of line in my opinion and well worth the trip.

Dr. Siriwat-042-327-555
Udon Thani
Located on Makkaeng Rd., between Posri Rd. and Srisuk Rd., closer to the Srisuk end.
My wife saw him and he helped her. Also a friend of mine, his wife had some cataract work done by the Siriwat. They were pleased with the results and cost.
He has privileges at all the Udon Hospitals.

Aek Udon Hospital has a female eye specialist / surgeon and was quite impressive solving my little problem. Can't recall the Thai name but she is the only eye specialist there.

Thanks guys. MIL was too scared to go to a 'big' city like Udon so she took herself off to the government hospital in Nong Khai. She was quite happy but treatment consists solely of 4 weeks worth of eyedrops. Personally I haven't heard of eyedrops curing the onset of blindness but....I'm not a doctor. We'll give it a month and if it's not effective my BF will go up north and escort her to Udon.

I live in Udon, last year had some problems, asked around, went to Bkk,the Rutnin(spelling) eye Hospital is IMHO World-class,and not expensive either.
Go for the best! (IMG:style_emoticons/default/cool.gif)

Thanks guys. MIL didn't improve after her Nong Khai Hospital experience, so my fiance flew up north and took her to Dr Nattapat, the female eye specialist at AEK Udon and thankfully her condition can be easily corrected. My man was very impressed with the doctor's gentle way of speaking with his little old Isaan mum who was literally shaking in her boots at the sight of the 'big city hospital'. He said the doc took a lot of time to explain what she was doing, and why. Would recommend her, especially if you have any Isaan relatives that are nervous in hospitals.
