To anyone who might help,

I'm a German citizen who wishes to marry a golden-hearted Thai girl. My problem is that I've lived in the States since I was two (other than two years in Germany when I was 11-12). My German is therefore very rusty with limited vocabulary.

I visited the German Embassy in Bangkok and received the documented requirements in both German and Thai that both my girlfriend and I need to fulfill to satisfy the German requirements. While I can understand some of it to a degree I need local help so that I can begin this 3-4 month process.

If anyone can help me here I'd be much obliged. My location is near Ratchada and Rama 9 in Huai Khwang. My email is: <snip>. A good opportunity to make new friends, too!

Peter,

usually a German - Thai marriage can be accomplished in abt. 4 - 6 weeks (if you marry here in Thailand) and does not necessarily take heaps of months.

In any case you will need the support from a German Department for marriage and registration (Standesamt). Actually the one in the town or district in Germany you have last resided and been registered will be the one in charge.

Based on the documents provided by you (e.g. single status certificate of your financee, house register etc.) a so called Ehefaehigkeitszeugnis (statement that BOTH of you are qualified to engage in marriage) will be issued by the Standesamt. With this document on hand you approach the German embassy in Bangkok again that will issue a bilingual (German - Thai) document called Konsularbescheinigung. On base of this document you can eventually get married within half an hour at the local amphoe office.

You long time absence may possibly makes things a little bit more difficult since the German officier at the Standesamt may request in your case a single status certificate from the US. It can be extremely helpful if you have someone in Germany who can visit him/her in person and present your case and hopefully pull the officier on your side to avoid long lasting document legalization processes. The most important person in the entire game is the German Standesbeamter because in terms of a wedding in Thailand and issuing an Ehefaehigkeitszeugnis he has the power of decision and can make either things very difficult or easy.

Do you have the details in terms of your last place of residence in Germany and ideally somewhere there to make the walk to the local Standesamt for you to ask the officier what kind of documents are required in your very special case.

If you get stuck and need additional help you can e-mail me at richard@tramaico.com for further advice or setting up a appointment for a personal get together. I'm down in the southern part of BKK (on Rama 3 Road).

Cheers,
Richard
