We are going to San Kom tonight, a small town on the banks of the mighty Mekong, hopefully it will be a clear sky and a full moon for the best results of these floating balls to rise from the water, hover for a few mins then disintegrate,

Have any TV members seen this event before?

Heres a site about this, Cheers, Lickey.

I went to watch them near Kong Chiam last year. I sat on the bank for a couple of hours, and during that time 4 ascended; I missed the first, not really knowing what to look out for. (It didn't help that the local crowd, in an attempt to help spotting this amazing phenomenon involving lights at night, were setting off fireworks huh.gif ).

I saw them from about a metre above the water - they were not emerging from the same place each time, so you would have to be really lucky to spot one coming out of the water. They ascended silently and rapidly, then disappeared.

I still have no explanation for them; but I would eliminate divers or other tricks, as the water was too fast, the period too long, and the spread too large.

Maybe there really is a Naga down there !

On a side note, I voiced the common opinion that it might be caused by pockets of gas somehow released by tidal effects during full moon. This argument was knocked down immediately - the researchers from Khon Kaen University did not see any pockets of gas. I hadn't the heart to ask how many Naga they had spotted.

Cheers,
Mike

I hope whoever is going to see the bang fai payanak gets a parking place - the road from Phibun to Kong Chiam is the busiest I have ever seen it, with a continual flow of vehicles headed to the Maekong.

Good luck,
Mike

The site we went to watch was half-way between SongKram and Sri Chaing Mai on the 211 road, it was packed, 3 big tourist buses, lots of mini buses, trucks cars bike tractors ect, its about 2k east of the scenic point and waterfall place.

Got settled down with the mrs and workers and got the BBQ going, 6pm, then the moon came out an went in [cloud] after 15 mins, then the first 3 red/purple things went up into the air, near all same trajectory, big OOOOOO went up from the crowd, missed the [objects? with cam] 15 mins later, 3 more, same trajectory, and seemingly from the same place, which we couldnt see.

Time to pack up and go home, many were doing this, and guess what, 3 more went up!!and the moon was out again...

Conclusion, mmm, nothing happened on the Laos side, so Thailand prouduces more methane gas, no suprise there then if it is catfish farting?and these orbs went up about 30mtrs before dissapearing, no trail, just nothing.

Conclusion 2, 2/3 blokes were hiding on a small island with some red hot coal/coke nuggets and were firing them into the air with catapults!!

So Andy, i think its a money maker where we were, and Mike, i reckon you saw the real thing from what you describe, and sorry folks, no pics..

Cheers Lickey.
