How to Ignore Users on this forum.

by Oneman

Many posters on this forum are a "pain".
I'm convinced that is exactly what they intend to be.
Thankfully, this forum offers a function to "Ignore Users", and you may select exactly the users you wish to ignore.

If it weren't for the 'ignore' feature I wouldn't be here anymore.
But using that has changed my opinion of ThaiVisa from (before) "a pain" and not worth reading, to (now) an effective forum to offer and receive useful information.

I filter on these characteristics:
  • Use of profanity. I don't care how clever someone is, if they use profanity, I don't trust their thinking ability on any topic.
  • Posting only yellow faces without thoughtful comments
  • Consistently off-topic
  • Disgusting avatar
  • Outright stupidity
But I don't filter on ignorance.
If someone posts wrong information, something I know to be wrong, well, when it comes to Thailand, we are all learning all the time.

My ignore list is now 410 names (July, 2009).
I didn't do it all at once, just a minute here and there over many months.
That means I will never again be subjected to profane, inane, off-topic, or stupid posts from any of those users.
And that has changed my experience of Thai Visa from a pain, into worthwhile reading.

The result you get is that all posts from your ignored users will be empty.
You will see the user's name, but instead of a post, just a small, empty, box, with a brief note, "You have chosen to ignore posts from this user."

Also, you will see, "Click here to view this post."
So, if you want to read an ignored post, you can easily click to see it.
Once in a while, I'll do that -- click to read a post from someone I've ignored, just to check myself -- 99% of the time, it's not worth reading!

So, how do you accomplish this for yourself?
Here are step-by-step instructions:

1) When you find a post from someone you want to ignore in future, click on their user name to the left of the post.

2) You will see a small, drop-down menu with several options.
Select the top option, "View Member Profile".

3) On the member profile page, left side, you will see:
----------------

----------------
Options
options <-- Select the drop-down menu "options".
----------------
4) In the "options" menu, the top choice is, "Ignore User".
Click on "Ignore User".

5) The page will change to
Welcome to your control panel
Manage your ignored users
Below that will be, "Add a new user to your list."
The condemned's user name will be automatically entered in the white space.
Click on the button, "Update Ignored Users".
Done!
That person's posts will never again clutter up your screen -- or your mind.

More tips:

There is a separate function for blocking private messages from users.
"Add to PM Block List."
The procedure is similar.

There is also an option to make all avatars disappear (those sophomoric pictures).
You will find that on your "Control Panel",
..."Options"
... ... bottom left side, "Board Settings"
Do you wish to view members avatars when reading topics? = No

I hope knowing about these options will increase your benefit from reading Thai Visa.
If anything here is not clear, please tell me.
If you have any questions, please ask me.

To make your reading of this forum more worthwhile, I recommend the "Ignore User" function. To use that, I have written step-by-step instructions on my "Personal Profile" page, in the tab, "About Me / My Content".
