We have only the one vet in Ranong. During the day he works for the government, and runs his clinic at night. We just had 2 bitches spayed for 600 Baht apiece and a very neat job he made. Also our cat lost out in a fight with an unknown dog. She was in a bad state of shock. At one stage she would not eat. He has pulled her around, what more can I ask? She was almost dead when I found her, she's not yet 100%, and a lot of her instincts are still coming back. The toilet habits are been worked on. (Phew).
While in the UK I was not a cat person, this one has grown on me, and we never have a problem finding people wanting her kittens. She's one of the few round here without a screwed up tail.

I have a Shar Pei that has eye problems. Which she should have her eyes tacked. Does anyone in the Nakon Sawan or Phetchabun area know of a good veternarian or pet hospital can do the procedure.

a few weeks ago i found a very good vet who makes house calls: Ari Pet Hospital, Matee Tangpanit. DVM. 02-271-3182. i first brought my cat to Thong Lo Animal Hospital, and they wanted to keep him for a week or so for all kinds of tests. also, this particular cat is very high strung, and completely freaks out when ever i take him to the vet, let alone leave him there.

i was lucky to find the above Vets # and he came to the house (along with 2 assistants). he also informed me that the cat needed special cat food, water and some vitamins, and did not need a whole battery of tests, or a trip to the hospital. the cat is now back to his old self.

also, i should mention that when the Vet came into my apartment, the cat was out on the balcony, and when he saw Mr. Maytee, came in and walked right up to him. which was unusal for him. and then hung out near him while we were talking. hope this helps anyone looking for a vet. i spent 2 exausting weeks looking for one.

Sam, just for other Bangkokites information, does this vet make housecalls just in certain areas? Hows his English?

Sounds like a great vet, I believe animals can sense a sympathetic soul.

Happy to say I stumbled upon a very good and inexpensive Animal Hospital. It's at the Faculty of Vetinary Science at Mahidol University Salaya Campus (near Butthamonthon; about halfway between the Pinklao area and Nakorn Pathom: conveneient to anyone on that side of the river or in BKK if close to one of the bridges).

A large fully equipped hospital, they treat animals of all kinds on walk-in basis 8:30 - 3:30 Mon-Fri (but with 1 hour lunch break 12-1) and 8:30-11:30 Saturdays and not sure but I think also Sundays.

My angel seemed to have stopped peeing and was crying all the time so I was frantic with worry about renal disease and the like and was inSalaya getting my niece settled at school, quite far for the place I usually take her to which is the non-profit Animal Hospital on Ramkanheng (also quite good). So I took her to the Mahidol place instead and was quite pleasantly surprised. Very professional, the Vet took a very detailed history, spent a lot of time, and total cost for consultation, abdominal film, blood work and medication was only 300 Baht!

It is very easy to find once at the campus, you just drive to the Vetinary Science building and the building's main entrance takes you directly into the clinic/hospital registration area. The campus is also very easy to find coming off of route 338 (Boromchanee or whatever), just take the Buttamonthon Soi 4 exit.

P.S. to my relief her kidney function is fine and no obstruction, just cystitits which was causing her to pee so often in small drops that it hadn't been visible in the litterbox. So all is well except for the need to give her daily antibiotic which is causing a great deal of blood shed (mine)....

I'm not sure exactly where he makes house calls, I would think its anywhere.

His English is excellent.

To me one of the most important aspects of a Vet is how they relate to animals.

Also, the animal hospital wanted to all kinds of tests, he could have said the same thing or something similar to make more money. He didn't.

Absolutely fantastic, excellent skills and assessment, and very compassionate bedside manner. If he cannot fix the problem, he tells you. Keeps up to date on latest treatments and local diseases. Very kind with strays. Extremely clean clinic. Treats emergencies on arrival. No nonsense, but extremely kind. He knew every one of my family by name and took care of the many injured strays I brought in, often for no charge. Used him since he arrived (geez, forget when!) We even smuggled animals into Chaweng hospital for xrays. I think his new office has those facilities now. Also another animal hospital further south along the ring road that does blood tests, etc. But, I have a soft spot for Somsak and his staff. Like family. My file there is as thick as "War and Peace".
Dunno about surgery on Samui. Friends took their injured dog to a Phuket hospital.
As SBK said, PAC on Koh Phangnan is great. Is the Irish vet in Hong Kong still volunteering there?
And, in my view, the real vets in Thailand (not the ones who just administer steroids to fighting cocks) are as good as any I've seen in Canada, where the prices are 20 times higher. One of my dogs was poisoned in pre-Somsak days, so rang my sis in Canada. She called her vet and he had no idea what to do. Thank the gods for the Internet.

My experience of Chiang Mai Uni Small Animal Hospital - took my Thai Ridgeback for castration (sorry boy!) and was pleased with the place overall.
The "ward" was a bit cattleshed-like but vets speak very good English & looked after him well. Hes very nervous around strangers, so we were worried about leaving him. When we picked him up the vet apologised that he was still a bit out of it, as it took a while to catch him! They were talking in Thai to him at first but then realised he was a falang dog & changed to English to make him feel at ease. I think this shows a compassionate service, as they could have cornered him & pinned him down, but they took the time to talk to him!
The op cost 600 & drugs 90, 200 for blood tests before hand to check he was healthy, 50 for next appointment to change bandage, nothing to take out stitches on the poor things 4th visit!! and then 200 for combined rabies, parvo etc shot.
We just walked in first time & had blood taken, then made appointment for op a few days later. Receptionists didn't speak much English, but sent out a vet to help with forms etc.
Its located on the Canal Road just next to the traffic lights between Suthep Road & Huay Kaew Road.

Anyway, she is hoping to get a Thai vet to move to the island ala Somsuk in order to take the burden off PAC in treating pets and let it get back to its original aim of treating and sterilizing the stray population.

I took my dog to the vet yesterday for his annual rabies vaccination, my vet is excellent (Bangkok) been using him for 6 years and mutt loves him. Surgery spotless and staff wonderful with animals. Annual rabies vaccination/worming tablets/6 months supply of Programme flea tablets/doctors fee... cost 1800 baht. Nails clipped.... free.

He makes house calls when necessary, I'm not sure but think most do as well. Cant speak for other parts of Thailand but spoiled for choice in Bangkok.

Dr. Maytee and the young female vet( I wish I could think of her name) that works with him are absolute wonders. I have had poor experiences in the past with vets in BKK. That has all changed now. His assitants are top notch and his clinic is very clean. He was far from where I stayed in BKK and offered to make a house call but I wanted to give a taxi driver who wanted to be a pet taxi business experience so I went to him. I found a tiny less than a kilo little what has turned out to be a dwarf manx mix cat at my temple, she was a mess; fleas, ear mites, a huge chunk out of her little leg. And he fixed her up so well. It took 3 times to get those mites out of her ears and he was so reasonable and explained everything. I have assisted vets before and in fact assisted with the fixing operation in Bangkok 16 years ago for my Lotus cat, so I know a bit about what a vet should be and this place is professional. They also have grooming. And they are always interested in learning more. I shared some of my magazines about animals from the states and they liked them so much I gave them to them and when it came time that I came back to San Francisco, little Tiger Blossom all healed up by now, thanks to their care, they gave all the right injections a little booklet for my Blossom with her shots listed and told me where to go to get the agriculture approval for export. The last cat I took back to the states Lotus only needed shots no agriculture office so Thailand is really modernizing. Oh, also the technicians are very gentle with the cats and dogs. i'm coming back to Bangkok and believe me all the wat cats and dogs that I send money to feed are going to go to him. And he this clinic is so reasonable. Best catnip

Here in Jomtien they have a 24 hour animal hospital which is excellent. My cat Fred caught
feline HIV fighting with Thai cats, and we figured out what it was too late. He was 13, and
got daily life support for 3 hours ( antibiotics, IV nutrition and fluids) for 300 baht oer day.
He died, but my wife and I were happy we could be with him when he passed - we loved
him very much, and I cannot say enough good things about the animal hospital. However,
Thai dogs and cats have all sorts of diseases, and there is no good vaccination against
feline HIV, so cat owners should try to keep their cats indoors in Thailand!

Sorry to hear about Fred, I know the feeling. My cat died last year at the age of 16. She was a Thai cat but not a roaming one and always had her shots.

Does anyone happen to know of a "veterinary cardiologist" in Bangkok (or anywhere in Thailand)? Has anyone had to treat a pet with heart problems? And if so, what was your experience?

Well actually, I don't want to say anything bad about anyone but I thought you should know. I used to go to doctor Maytee since 1994 (his vet practice wasn't here yet) and I've always had more or less good experience with him. But I've changed vet for a couple of years now cuz I don't know about the woman doctor.

Once my dog had this really huge bump on her waist - the size of a golf ball. I took her to the doctor and she took one look at it and told me to go home said it was nothing just come back when it gets bigger....nothing? its the size of a golf ball!! So still not satisfied, I took her to Kasetsart University (for you expats, the university animal hospital clinics are always satisfactory ex: Chula, Kasetsart, Mahidol...but there's a very long wait ). Anyhow, the doctor there told me that the bump was in fact, from an infection and said there was no way that the woman doctor could know unless she took some example and had it tested (which she didn't). So my dog healed quite quickly from the meds she was given. I've never went back to that vet practice again because of other little incidents too that made me wary of them. Plus...they overcharge. So now I see Dr.Attaporn, his vet practice is in front of SoiArisumphan 3. He's great!

Its amazing how character asassination happens on websites. If you went to Dr. Maytee for all this time, why would you bring your pet to see someone else there? My cats are like my children, and he is the only person there I would think of seeing them. He saved one cats life when an animal hospital, that I will leave unnamed, wanted to take the very old, high strung cat in for a week of observation and tests. I don't think he would have survived. Dr. Maytee made a house call and told me to feed him certain cat food and give him vitamin paste. That was a year ago and the cat is fine. Also, when he comes to see them they all go right up to him. (Even one time after he took one cat's blood).

I love the "other little incidents". Powerful arguement there. There were many times he could have done many other services which I asked about, but he said were unnecessary.

l am about 100 k's from Udon Thanni ,,, l take my german shepherd to a vet there , they are always concerned but not that helpful ,, a bit like Thai doctors in the country ,, like to give a lot of pills and take blood samples for worms ,,,,the problem l have now is he (the dog) has a has some sort of infection in his foot ,, namely in the toe nail which is causing the lower leg and foot to swell ,, the vet looked at it but did not inspect it ,, took the usual blood samples and said a worm could cause it ( rubbish ) ,, l would like to know if someone in the Udon area can recommend a good vet ,, as many of you will understand ,, he (the dog again ) is much much more than just a dog and l want the best for him ,,,,,
