Matchima, Pracharaj part company The Matchima political group yesterday voted unanimously to leave the Pracharaj Party and support its former financial backer Prachai Leophairatana. Prachai quit the party on Friday to lead his own organisation and seek the job of prime minister. Matchima leader Somsak Thepsuthin (TRT Banned #18) said Prachai would lead a new party. Some 70 politicians were present with Somsak during yesterday's news conference. These included Somsak's wife and former Pracharaj Party secretary, Anongwan Thepsuthin, and its former spokesman, Narong Piriya-anek, who represents Prachai. Anongwan said there were several reasons for the split. She described the elements of Prachai's policy platform as more attuned to the group. These, she said, included agricultural-price guarantees and a subsidised, Bt15 fixed-rate subway fare. She said the group trusted Prachai - with his extensive business background - would make these policies work. The group added it wanted to maintain truly "central-leaning policies" and pursue its agenda in a "creative" fashion. She added former TPI boss Prachai was fit to be the next prime minister because of his business experience. A recent poll revealed people wanted an economic leader to run the country and Prachai was a brave and able person, Anongwan explained. When it was pointed out that Prachai had to be bailed out by the state after the 1997 Asian financial crisis, Anongwan defended Prachai, saying it was not his fault but that of then-prime minister Chavalit Yongchaiyudh, who "mismanaged the crisis". She added that the group had no problem with Pracharaj Party leader Snoh Thienthong (TRT Non-Banned #1) but, after having read harsh remarks made by Snoh about them, Anongwan said she would not meet Snoh in person. The decision to quit was taken quickly and followed by a round of applause. Registration forms for a political party named Matchima were given to members immediately after the vote. Meanwhile, Snoh told reporters yesterday the conflict between himself and Prachai was not serious but admitted it included Prachai's "expensive and lofty" policies. "If, when the time comes, these cannot be materialised it would be tantamount to fooling citizens," Snoh said. "Prachai is brilliant at everything except politics, where he is a beginner at kindergarten level. Neither does he have contacts nor does he understand politics. And, I say this as someone who cares and loves him as a younger brother," Snoh said. He said there were differences of opinion over candidates, too. Prachai yesterday countered Snoh's remarks, saying he might be a beginner at politics unlike some older politicians "who are well versed in the art of vote-buying". "I'll sell policies that enable people to have better livelihoods and make the country rich. I have no policies where temple land is converted into a golf course." Sanoh said Prachai, who on Friday announced his resignation from the Pracharaj party, was politically naive and had enemies in every political party. "When I come to think of it, I feel sorry for Prachai. He is new to politics and thinks there are a lot of people [supporting him] when they are rallying around him," he said. "I am concerned about him because he is good at everything except people and politics. He is more naive [politically] than a kindergarten kid." Sanoh's remarks came as the Matchima group, led by Anongwan Thepsuthin, wife of its founder Somsak, decided to defect from the Pracharaj party along with Prachai. Leaving the party with Anongwan are over 70 members of the Matchima faction. The break-up came less than three weeks after it merged with Pracharaj. The quiet ceremony was held at the university, centre stage of the violent suppression of the student movement three decades ago. Politicians in attendance were National Legislative Assembly member Chamlong Srimuang and former natural resources and environment minister Praphat Panyachartrak. Missing were other politicians who were once student activists, such as Prommin Lertsuridej (TRT Banned #24), Sutham Saengprathum (TRT Banned #105) and Surapong Suebwonglee (former TRT Spokesperson). The party kicked off its campaigning and fund raising in the Northeast. Party deputy leader Samphan Lertnuwat said yesterday that leader Samak Sundaravej sought permission two weeks ago from the Bangkok governor to use Sanam Luang. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has yet to reply. "We are waiting for permission from the governor. We will ask again," he said. The party is confident the rally will be allowed to proceed. The rally is set for this Friday with the highlight a speech by Samak outlining the party's mass-transit policy. Other key members will speak, too. Chalerm, sons join People Power Party Chalerm Yoobamrung and his sons have become members of the People Power Party, spokesman Kuthep Saikrajang said yesterday. He said the party had approved a number of new members including Chalerm and his three sons. But the party has not yet decided whether to field any of the new members in the upcoming election. The party also launched its official website www.ppp.or.th and promoted six deputy spokespersons to take charge of the party in separate regions of the country. Former actor Danuporn Punnakanta is in charge of the party's Bangkok region, he said. He called on the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to allow the party to organise a campaign rally at Sanam Luang. "We checked the schedule and found there were no organised events this Friday," he said. Prachai Liewpairat, the incoming leader of the Matchima Tippatai party, denies he is in conflict with Pracharaj party leader Snoh Tienthong saying that he still respects Snoh. Prachai adds his resignation from the Pracharaj Party occurred because he and Snoh have different political policies. He says the Pracharaj party did not want to rush into announcing its policies as Snoh was afraid it would not be possible to implement them. But Prachai disagreed with the idea so he quit the party. Prachai announces that the Matchima Tippatai party aims to get at least 120 MP seats in the House of Representatives in the election, to form a new government with the former opposition parties and the Ruam Jai Thai Chartpattana. In Thai politcs very few sitting MPs lose. TRT built up its huge majority on sucking sitting MPs from all parties and now PPP aims to do the same. Gen. Surayud may dream of no vote buying but it is the transferring of MPs that he needs to worry about in terms of money politics. The next election is nothing to do with democracy as the PPP just use money to suck up sitting MPs and to counter this the Junta side will have to use equally nefarious tactics. It will be intyeresting to see what they come up with to counter the tried and tested and proven tactic of hiring siting MPs that has put people into powertime and time again in Thailand. However, it is unlikely either camp will form the core of a new government. So who would be voters' third choice? Money is the main factor. The PPP is heavily monied up and investing while others struggle to find the funds. The interesting comment is about how Chavalit would have been a better choice for the Isaan rather than Samak who has previously been very insulting to demonstrating Isaan farmers. Well so much for any so called leftist credentials or for that matter pro-democracy ones that this guy previously claimed. Sharing the stage with the cheerleader of Bangkoks worst massacre. True colors. One can only guess that his master has temporarily loaned him out to Samak. It would be interesting to hear how Jakrapob would explain this alliance. Police earlier requested the court to allow them to bring the six anti-coup protest leaders into detention again after they returned to Bangkok's Sanam Luang anti-coup rally to give speeches to anti-coup demonstrators after their release August 6.Police claimed their action was deemed to breach the bail conditions that they must not resume any activities to cause social disunity. The six, who were released on bail after 12 days confinement at Bangkok Remand Prison, included former key members of the now-disbanded Thai Rak Thai Party -- Chatuporn Promphan, Jakrapob Penkair , Nattawut Saikua, Veera Musikhapong , Aphiwan Wiriyachai and Wiphuthalaeng Phatthanaphumthai. The Criminal Court then refused to grant permission to the police request, reasoning that the action of the six was not considered violating the bail condition, but warned them to adhere strictly to the court order. The activists were arrested on charges of instigating the July 22 clashes between anti-junta demonstrators and riot police outside the Bangkok residence of chief privy councillor Gen. Starting Friday and Saturday, representatives of the Democrat Party will visit locals in Khon Kaen province to discuss with them on solutions to improve their quality of life, reported Somcharn Srisongchai, chairman of the Democrat’s provincial branch. The weekend’s event titled “Democrats Return to Isaan” would invite locals to convene with party members to discuss issues concerning politics, economics, society, culture, health, education, natural resources and regional tourism. Reportedly, hundreds of party members would attend the event, as key members like party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva, secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban, Jurin Laksanavisit, Khunying Kalaya Sophonpanich, Chinaworn Boonyakiat and head of the party’s former MPs of the Northeast, Witoon Nambutr, would join the party’s discussion with the locals. According to party deputy spokesman Danuporn Punnakanta, the speakers included leader Samak Sundaravej, lawyer Noppadon Pattama, Yongyuth Tiyapairat and Surapong Suebwonglee. They will speak about the state of the country one year after the coup. The party expects 70,000 people to attend. Danuporn said People Power was busy selecting candidates for Bangkok constituencies and it was possible Chalerm Yoobamrung would contest his home seat of Thon Buri. If they are not known as proxies of the mighty one then they stand to lose votes outside of those they control through their feudal overlords and canvasser network. Mr. Thaksins name attracts certain voters they would like on top of the millions enthralled to the PPP sitting MPs. Mr. Samak is more likely to turn these voters off hence his very public statement that he is a proxie for dear leader. He is of course gambling that the powers that be wont disolve the party for what is a clear abuse. He is probably on good ground here as to disolve PPP would probably cause more politcal rifts and to actually turf out the cheerleader of Bangkoks worst massacre would enable PPP to select someone even more dangerous to the powers. PPP salutes Thaksin legacy The People Power Party (PPP) drew around 25,000 people for its first major rally in Bangkok at Sanam Luang yesterday where the party promised to continue the legacy of ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra. No major new policies were unveiled, with the main message put across to supporters that the ideas laid down by TRT would prevail. ''Samak [sundaravej] will become a prime minister like Thaksin for you,'' said party spokesman Kuthep Saikrachang on stage. However, PPP leader Samak spent little time talking of what he and his party will do if they are voted into power, with most of his speech focusing on how great a leader Thaksin had been. Samak said PPP was almost complete in its efforts to ensure it had 480 candidates ready to run for every parliamentary seat in the Dec 23 general election. sriracha john Posted October 12, 2007 Author Share Posted October 12, 2007 Korn is Pracharaj's pick for PM The Pracharaj Party has placed Korn Dabbaransi (TRT Non-Banned #7) at centre stage as it gears up for the general election, saying he will be PM if the party wins a mandate to form a coalition government after the poll. Pracharaj leader Sanoh Thienthong (TRT Non-Banned #1) said Korn is a ''veteran and prolific'' politician with a clean record, which makes him an eligible candidate for the prime minister's post. Korn has an incontestable political background, he added, noting that Korn is known as the political heir to the Ratchakhru clan led by late PM Chatichai Choonhavan. ''I am confident with my nomination. He has proven that he is knowledgeable and has calibre,'' said Sanoh, who noted that the PM does not have to be a party leader. ''I am confident in him since he is an eight-time MP for the Northeast and I am confident the 'Ratchakhru blood' will carry on the [political] ideology,'' he said. Korn, who was leader of the Chart Pattana party before joining TRT, contested in Nakhon Ratchasima, Chatichai's base, in previous elections. The nomination of Korn came after Prachai Leophairatana left the Pracharaj party to lead the Matchima party. The group led by Somsak Thepsuthin (TRT Banned #18) will change its registered name to Matchima Thippatai on Monday. John K Posted October 13, 2007 Share Posted October 13, 2007 One of the things the PPP/TRT seems to have overlooked, is policies of a few years ago are typically obsolete because of changing conditions. Saying they will follow what Thaksin did simply says they will do nothing except push reset to bring back September 18, 2006. To me this suggests that collectively they have not a clue because they can’t seem to outline specific actions.
