george
Thai Govt attacks drunk driving on the Internet BANGKOK: -- PM Dr Thaksin announced today a plan to make it illegal to use the Internet while affected by liquor or a drug, or to discuss sexually explicit matters on the Internet. The proposed bill will enable the Royal Thai Police to monitor internet traffic of those who use or abuse alcohol or drugs, Dr Thaksin said. The PM was confident that bill would be passed by the parliament and said “There is too much immoral activity between teenagers that begins in an internet chat room." Adding that studies from the health ministry showed the rise in teenage pregnancies mirrored the average rise in internet use among teens in Bangkok, Nonthaburi, and Chonburi. This bill follows several lately, passed by parliament to keep Thai society free from dark influences which threaten to change the culture. In recent weeks a clampdown has been ordered on high pressure water pistols as well as on advertising and promoting sexual enhancement products. The Thai prime minister was quoted saying "I myself have forbidden my daughter last week to use the internet after she drank a glass of wine" but refused to elaborate further on the nature of her internet activities. The internet cafe Community in Thailand fears a lack of income from beverage sales due to this measure. It's still not clear which products will be outlawed. Carlsberg and TCC Group of Thailand, producers of the Chang brand have calculated this could lead to an overall downturn of sales if the new bill is implemented. The Company already received opposition from Buddhist monks last week, when they proposed to list their stocks on the SET exchange. This latest measure might put another damper on their move to the stock exchange and has forced the major brewer to consider an alcohol free version of its popular beer to maintain profits. Internet usage has already been restricted by the Thai Internet Police to prevent youths from looking at sexual content. In this latest measure they will be aided by a software company from Nonthaburi Software Park, who has developed an "Internet logger" which logs all requests within Thailand. This system is unique in the world and has been developed in cooperation with Shincorp their main shareholder. Ngo's have complained already by the flagrant disregard for human rights, that this "Thai Big Brother" system represents. The PM dismissed opposition taunts that the cost would be excessive, saying he plans to use money raised from a special “lottery” to fund the project and would also direct funds away from the controversial “Elite card” system to help implement this within the next 3 months. Civil liberties groups say they will challenge the law in constitutional court. "The prime minister is trying to use this issue to distract people from his poor handling of the economy this year." said Somchai Chaiwannakhup, of the Thai Law Foundation. --Agencies 2005-04-

This needs to be published around the world - push the fact that mr 't' has no grip on reality. Wait till the law comes out that requires every computer in the kingdom to have a breathalyser.... software company from Nonthaburi Software Park, who has developed an "Internet logger" which logs all requests within Thailand. This system is unique in the world and has been developed in cooperation with Shincorp their main shareholder. it beggars belief - how is he allowed to get way with this? can I place a bet that the tsunami early warning system he announces will have to be monitored by shin corp satellites? cdnvic
That would take more bandwidth than Thailand's got to do that kind of monitoring. They won't pull it off. Have they got 1,000,000 elite card members yet like he said they would? cv
Artisi
another bloody comedy starting - when will it all end. surely they would be better served to concentrate on drunk and drug affected drivers- I'd certainly prefer to have a head on crash with a computer driven by a drunk driver than an overloaded 10 wheel truck or speeding bus piloted by a drug using / alcohol crazed moron. mouse
My question is: If I cannot afford the breatherlyzer apparatus, will I be forced to pay for the armed guard's meals and lodging. I speak of the armed guard that will be posted next to my CPU, checking all users to see if they are intoxincated? Insight
Where would we be without this website and it's constant feed of reliable news sources. This is about as daft as that policy they tried to introduce last year about forcing people to shower in public to save water.

Thaitim007
Thai Govt attacks drunk driving on the Internet BANGKOK: -- PM Dr Thaksin announced today a plan to make it illegal to use the Internet while affected by liquor or a drug, or to discuss sexually explicit matters on the Internet. Let's face it. Bangkok is the number 1 redlight IN THE WORLD. And for Mr Thaksian to preach morality - when he and his cabinet are frequent members of PLAZA ENTERTAINMENT CENTER, etc etc.. well what can you say. We all know this country is 15% nightlife/redlight staff, run and organised by the army, the police, the government and the mafia. 25% of student girls are 'sponsored' by paying sugar daddies, in exchange for.. whatever. The whole country is sexually explicit, and immoral - and the people either don't know in denial, or know and don't mind. Just as keeping open Rachada road and RCA discotheques and pubs into the night (teenage love heaven) and closing early adult entertainment in the city centre, we know where the money concerns are, and the people involved. If they want to eradicate the redlight in Thailand, what are they going to do for the 5 million people directly or indirectly employed. What about the 27 billion USD that actually mostly goes to the countryside families, from their hard working daughters and nieces. What are they going to make to replce about Thailands 13% of GDP? Mr Thaksin is trying to eradicate poverty, and investing in education, health, and then bringing wealth, and job opportunities to all is going to help to phase out the current status quo. It is going to take 20 years, and then the will of the greedy mafia, police, government people and army to stop driving and exploiting the poor. My concern is that these greedy people will never change, and will enjoy taking what they want, to the excess. I only hope that in the future, all the people in Thailand get a real choice, and all those greedy people get old and pass away. Hope the new generation of politician and public sector people will not follow their corrupt aged predecessors, stealing tax money, that the people of the country need to make Thailand the best place to live on Earth. You already have the highest % of kind hearted people, the best food, and a great location. Fix this, and you bring us all heaven.

shaunoro
Oh well, i suppose i better go out and buy a brethalizer kit for my CPU. These will probably be produced and patented by Shincorp. Perhaps the police would do better cracking down on the drivers of 10 wheelers and pick trucks who take their yaba, washed down with a bottle of Sang som. Perhaps the policing of the internet can be funded by the missing 2 million baht of Tsunami relief from Phuket.
