Life Changing Things To Do In And Around Chiang Mai

Well, life Changing is taking it a bit far but...

I've been in Thailand for the last 2 months, spent most my time on the islands partying, drinking, doing things 24 year olds do.
Now I've escaped to Chiang Mai to gather my thoughts and finish up my trip before I go home in 2 weeks.

I want my last 2 weeks in Thailand to really change me, the last couple of days I've been a bit quieter than usual and have been looking around at the local way of life and taking things in. I feel Im growing up a little bit and getting a bit more mature.
So I ask everyone, what are some suggestions on places to go/things to see and do that are interesting, grounding and make me think, laugh or cry?

So far on my list is just the standard CM stuff

Visit Hill Tribes
Elephant Trekking
Bungee Jumping
Zoo, Monkey Centre

Should I cross over into Burma or Laos? It might sound a bit sick but I want to see just how little some people have and what condition's some people have to live in. Kind of want to be shocked.

Hi guys,

We need to source 2 large pumpkin pies for Thanksgiving, and we HAVE to know that we can get them on Thursday. Probably some of the falang-oriented groceries will carry them, but we worry about them being sold out (having a dinner party, and PP and cranberry sauce are a MUST). Can anyone recommend? Should we pre-order somewhere?
Thanks!
(Yum - my mouth just watered writing this)

Feet Nibbled For 150 Baht Per Hour

Sawasdee Khrup, TV Friends,

We could hardly believe our human's eyes we were looking through as we went up to the 4th. floor of the Airport Plaza (in the back) looking for a Bangkok Bank ATM machine :

Here was a series of large fish tanks surrounded by seats : with people sitting on the seats with their feet, and part of their legs, in the fish tanks : being nibbled by small fish !

We talked to a friendly young person on the staff of the foot-fish farm (fish-fetish-foot-food-tanks ?). Only 150 baht per hour which they expect us to pay them !

We patiently explained to them in Thai that, since our Lotus Feet were extra-nutritiously special, they should be paying us 150 baht per fifteen minutes for the Grace of their Fish eating our Feet.

For reasons we cannot understand, even the explanation, to the manager of said foot-eating-parlor, that just a few sessions of nibbling our transmigrated soles would enable their fish to start doing amazing feats of synchronized swimming, as well as singing karaoke by modulating communal air-bubbles, did not convince them to beg us, on the spot, to offer our extremities to the fish, who, sensing our unique presence, had stopped eating feet and were swimming, in formation, to form a large infinity symbol while angry customers shook their fists and shouted in rage at the cessation of paid-for nibbling-services.

But, as is said, "an Horror is without Profit in his hometown mall."

best, ~o:37;

Sending Camera To Daughter In Thailand

My daughter is in Thailand with a broken camera. I'm trying to order one for her but understand that if I ship it from the US it will get caught up in customs and she'll get hit with taxes. I've tried to order it from tohome.com (an online Thai retailer), but their website keeps having errors. Can't get the payment to go through. Has anyone had success with any other Thai sites, or have any other suggestions? She is staying in southern Thailand... Krabi.
Thanks!
Byrdie

Board Of Directors For Foundation

I sit on the Board of Directors of a foundation here in Chiang Mai. When I first joined, I had to submit a criminal record check from my home country. This was not a problem since I was still living there at the time.

As per our bylaws, a new Board was just voted in and I am still on it. Apparently, the government requires another criminal record check from my home country...even though I've been living in Thailand for the past 5 years. Since I have no plans to travel back to my home country in the next few months, I cannot get the check done. The local consulate and the embassy in Bangkok do not provide this service as it must be done by a police agency.

Since there are hundreds of foundations in the city, I am assuming that one or two other farang have come across this same problem. What have you done?

French Man suspect in murder of girlfriend

French national, living in Chiang Mai province has been accused of killing his Thai girlfriend. The body of his girlfriend was found hidden in the boot of her own car in the driveway of the man’s residence.

Chiang Mai, the 15th of November 2009[PDN]: Police Lieutenant General Manop Jidjarudphan (inspector of Meeoon), received a report that a female body had been found dead in the trunk of a car in Oonkang, Chiang Mai. Police arrived on the scene to find the car with the woman’s body in it, parked in the driveway under a resort style 2-storey house. Following police investigations they found that the house belonged to a Mr Richard Mair Frederic age 66, of French nationality. Mr Frederic was found to have been a resident in Thailand for over 10 years.

The Police examined the scene and found a trail of blood leading from the house to the Red Mitsubishi where the body was found. It was later discovered that the body was that of Miss Suchada Sitthisarn age 33, of Oonkang, Chiang Mai. The body had been covered with a blanket and had several deep lacerations to the neck and back. There was also evidence of an attempted clean-up, as the ground was still quite wet in some parts. Doctors at the scene stated that Miss Sithisarn had been dead for approximately 4 hours. Officers interviewed the victim’s father Mr Boonsong Sitthisarn age 50, who stated that her daughter had completed her university studies in Bangkok, later returning to Chiang Mai in order to help the family with their noodle shop. Mr Sitthisarn explained that his daughter had met Mr Frederic and started a steady relationship with him. It was stated that on the evening of the 14th Miss Sitthisarn left home to visit Mr Richard and did not return as usual. Mr Sitthisarn went round to the house of Mr Frederic to see if her daughter was there, however upon arrival he questioned Mr Frederic as to the location of his daughter and was told that she had not been around, despite the fact that her car was parked in the driveway.Mr Frederic left the scene in his own car, travelling with a friend, in order to go to Meesai to renew his visa. Mr Sitthisarn was suspicious so he decided to return to the house and look through his daughter's car, using the spare key that he had in his possession. He then proceeded to discover the body of his daughter, ringing police to report the murder. Police learned of Mr Frederic’s intentions and decided to shut down the roads leading out of the city in order to apprehend him and his friend.

After a short time the pair were apprehended leaving the city. Both men were arrested and escorted back to the Meeoon police station, where it was discovered that they both had evidence of blood on their shoes. The two men flatly denied any involvement in the death of Miss Sitthisarn. Police have taken a sample of the blood for DNA testing. Once the results are confirmed as suspected, the two men will be arrested. Following which they will undergo intensive interrogation so the police may assertain the situation surrounding the death of Miss Sitthisarn.
http://www.pattayadailynews.com/shownews.p...NEWS=0000011115

All this talk about Thanksgiving got me to thinking about our menu. Traditionally my family has served succotash as a side dish and it would be easy to make here with my limited kitchen facilities ...... if only I could find lima beans!

The other ingredients -- corn, tomatoes, butter and whipping cream are readily available, but I have yet to find lima beans in any form here.
