A Taste Of Thai Life, Uk's View

It's my own fault for reading the Daily Mail, I know, but sometimes there are some useful articles in it hence, it gets a read now and again. The article that caught my eye this time was one entitled "A Taste of Thai Life" at the bottom of the property section in the Overseas Property Section.

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/property/articl...-hot-spicy.html

I read through the piece and finally came across the following statement about the property market in Phuket which reads, "It seems set to continue on an upward trend - and Thailand appears determined to put the country's recent hardships firmly behind it". Now that seemed to me to be a slight exaggeration so I penned a reply setting out what I though was a more accurate assessment and pressed the send button. A few minutes later the first readers letter appeared and thinking it was mine I took a peek. It seems Carol from Essex, someone who is not the worlds best speller, really enjoyed her holiday in Phuket and will visit again. As for the more accurate assesment, well, I tried sending it two more times and then gave up. It seems that only comments with a favorable bias are allowed so I pity the poor Brits who will read the piece and start to make plans to buy in Phuket on that basis. News or advertisement? Methinks the latter.

Flu Death In Phuket?

My GF just returned home with some breakfast which she bought nearby Kajonkiat school which she said was closed for a big clean up. The rumour mill amongst the street vendors was that one child had died from flu. Consider it may be just rumour &/or the school has closed early for the holidays next week but .....

My twin daughthers go to school in Phuket Town & yesterday when I picked them up they were chatting about how they did not have to do any school work as many of the students in their class were sick. They also claimed that influemza 2009 has been confirmed at their school but it was being kept quiet.

I think we all realise this flu cannot be contained (I just heard on the BBC the UK has already stated this) with 5 confirmed deaths in Thailand which are probably in line with deaths from normal seasonal flu. However there are other possibilities such as others having died outside the reporting system (an example of this are road accident statistics which do not seem to include those from private hospitals), there is some type of cover up (Thai authorities did not handle the avian flu at all well when it first appeared & the PM stating vaccines will be available in a couple of months when to date none have been developed), being a totally new flu strain could mean there is quite a knowledge gap.

My feeling is that everything about this flu should be made public so that people can make informed decisions about their health although it may cause some to panic.

"emergency" Orthodontist (braces) Repair

I've looked at the forums and can't find an answer, so hopefully someone with a girlfriend or kids that has had this problem will know what to do.

Is there anyone on Phuket that can repair a broken dental brace, i.e. replace the piece and reglue it?

My friend broke one of his braces on a chicken bone 2 days ago. He has tried 3 dental clinics, including the Smile place not too far from Central. According to all of the dentists/orthodontists, they will charge to do everything again, so he should return to his orthodontist in Hat Yai and get it fixed there. Seems rather stupid to me as we're talking about one of the small braces that is glued to the tooth, not redoing the mouth. I can't believe this because I remember breaking my braces as a teenager a few times and I was able to get it repaired from alternative orthodontists rather than driving all the way back home. It's bad enough he's a 30 year old with braces, but jeez having to take a long trip to glue a stupid piece of metal on his tooth doesn't make sense. Even if he had to pay more , it would be worth it to avoid the trip. He has to take time off from work to do this, so its even more of a hassle and he's right in the middle of a major project, plus his girlfriend is giving him grief etc.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

Tv Charge

Hi all!

Just a quick question. Landord at our apartment building just installed cable TV in all 6 apartments a few weeks ago. Bill is in for the month and each guest is being charged 350baht for the month (2,100baht for the 6 of us). Now we all live at the same address but have different room numbers. Is this normal? Any guesthouse/hotel owners know what the deal is? I can't imagine a 100 room hotel paying 350 baht per individual room i.e. 35,000 baht a month for cable.

Any help much appreciated.

Cheers,

Emubob

disclaimer: I read through the rules, and I hope this is not in violation. If it is, I apologize and the mods will moderate.

Hi everyone- I'm a wedding photographer based out of Chicago headed to Phuket for a week to scope out your beautiful island. I'm planning to start my week off in Surin.

Are there any couples (20-30yrs of age) that would like to be photographed? This would be free- no charge. I just want to shoot beautiful couples in a beautiful location.

If you are or know of anyone who might be interested could you have them PM me? I have a website and portfolio but do not wish to violate forum rules by posting it. This is not 'glamour' style photographs, but more in tune with the style of photography in the States.

That being said, I'm looking forward to Phuket! Though the 'other' thread about raised prices has me a little concerned.

Pig Flu In Phuket

Son got a high fewer this morning and we got him to the hospital in Phuket.

He was diagnosed with Influenza A virus. Same family as H1N1 pig flu. Then the hospital nurses said that they can not determine if it's a normal Influenza A or more specific pig flu. They said that the hospital is not ready for the test. The test would be complicated and the samples should be sent to Bangkok.

This is quite confusing information as they also said that if he would have H1N1, then his school would be closed for 2 weeks.

So there is a guidelines for the school, but no way to do the diagnosis of the illness. I find this a bit confusing.

I also know that the current version of big flu is very very mild. So maybe it's just common sense to make guidelines for the school to calm people down.. and then do not really do tests for the influenza?

Do you know what are the steps to check for the specific variations of influenza A and how long the test will take?
