Very Good Car Painting Job

For too long, I had one of the ugliest pick up trucks in town. Theoretically it was white, but it was a mess, even when the dirt and dust was hosed off it. I finally broke down and decided to get it painted. I had never had a vehicle painted before. I picked a shop in Ban Nam Lat. It's on the left (west side) of the main road, about a mile north of the Mae Fa Luang bridge - left of the village market.

The Thai guy there (I don't know his name) is a cheery fellow, and quoted me Bt.15,000 and stuck with it, even though I asked for a few extras (metal trim placed around the pick up truck bed, etc). I picked an unusual yellow/green color (a.k.a. pea soup).

Anyhow, the news is, I'm pleased as peaches with the paint job. The workers painted every part that was originally painted. They stripped off the old paint, fixed the dings, took out the interior stuff (seats and all), detached the bed of the pick-up, even painted most of the engine compartment without a speck of mistake. They did the bumper black, and the wheels silver. I was totally blown away with the high quality of their work!

Incidentally, why is it that 90% of Thai late-model vehicles are gray? Ok, they're either a shade of gray or silver, depending on semantics. It's particularly prevalent with pick-ups. Ok, if silver is the color of (and the name for) money - then why don't most Thais have a gold-colored vehicle, as gold shouts money even more than silver. Whatever happened to other colors, like red, blue, green, white, black, ....or, to get more daring; purple, mauve, turquoise, champagne, etc? There must be some very big influence for Thais going gray. Maybe the car sellers only get gray colored cars from the factory, who knows? (that's a real question; if anyone thinks they know, please offer suggestions).

Incidentally, studies find that gray/silver colored vehicles are among the least safe on the road, and that orange is safest - because of visibility to others.

My favorite explanation: a farang told me the reason Thais prefer gray for pick-up trucks is they image they're riding their war elephant.

9 Art Gallery / Architect Studio

The opening of the exhibition, Saturday July 4 at 7.00 pm, will be presided over by Marc Dumur, General Manager of The Legend resort of Chiang Rai.
As Canadian artist Robert Blair Porter has moved elsewhere now, Cornelis Hoek might be the only active foreign artist in Chiang Rai.

Cornelis Hoek, Dutch, resident of Chiang Rai for nearly ten years, is residing in a house that without any doubt not only accommodates the greatest library on art and international literature of Chiang Rai, but also holds an exquisite European and Asian art collection and thus surrounds him by the finest possible bearers of inspiration one might dream of.
The moment had to come that he would find a form of active engagement again, simply by a personal expression of his creativity.

His professional background shows a broad spectrum of cultural activities, not only in creating but also in accommodating visual and performing arts. Yes, he also visited the College of Horticulture and also the Hotel School, but it was in the conservatories of Mannheim and Amsterdam and the Opera Studio of Hannover that the future of his career artistically was determined.

As a soloist the concert singer Cornelis Hoek performed more than 400 times, for audiences in old European castles, cultural centers or simply at private residencies, like for instance those of the Rothschild bankers.

The position he acquired as a concert singer, his heart for the art and sake of classic music and his integrity as an artist led, in combination with his generally recognized organizational talents to the fact that he for not less than eleven years at a row was chosen to be the technical director of the prestigious International Summer Music Festival of Youth and Music in Germany.

The same organizational talents and mindset brought him the responsibility for the success of the European tours of the Bolshoi Opera of Moscow, the Kirov Ballet of Petersburg, but also the Royal New Zealand Ballet and the National Ballet of China.
His Chinese engagement resulted in the compilation, marketing and organizing of a respectable number of Chinese shows in Europe, with acrobatics, wushu components, dancing, singing and traditional and modern singing, that earned him great respect in Europe but in China as well.

Add to this his work as a visual artist, being a materially inspired weaver of more than 250 tapestries that found their destination in Dutch and German, public and private collections and we see a picture of the man behind the artist who presents himself to us with his latest and certainly surprising work at 9 Art Gallery / Architect Studio in Chiang Rai.

Drs. John 'Limbo' Jeurissen, former museum curator in the Netherlands.

Starry Night Society A Fact!

Yes, great, the Starry Night Society had its first meeting. Only two 'farangs' participated, one is Japanese and the other Dutch (myself so to say). Those who know me, also know that I started this forum to stimulate foreigners to participate in social life and cultural events in Chiang Rai. I would be very happy if foreigners loose this 'them and us' mentality as it is absolutely a wrong perception of reality.

We did so in the past by organizing concerts, exhibitions, spreading information about what is going on and much more.
During the last year much of the mutual information was shared by mailings, as the rules of this forum, that we necessarily respect, simply set limits to its use as a community forum.

The Starry Night Society is a group of rather prominent Chiang Rai people, (sorry to use this horrible word) intellectually oriented, university teachers, artists, enterpreneurs, interested in exploring, yes, the universe, but also the outer corners of the human brain.
The fact that the observatory at the Rajabhat University is the place where we meet is in this sense not accidently.

It's all about very dull things like poetry, music, visual and performing arts, so please don't bother to read this further if these are not the ingredients you wish on your plate. For steaks: Go to Don's!
We thank Professor 'Nee' for her great presentation and for making the first meeting of our society a great success!

Those who are interested, please send me a PM and I can tell you where you find the information to join our society.

Limbo

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/post-a87025-DSC05748.JPG.htmlhttp://www.thaivisa.com/forum/post-a87026-DSC05920.JPG.htmlhttp://www.thaivisa.com/forum/post-a87027-DSC05952.JPG.htmlhttp://www.thaivisa.com/forum/post-a87028-DSC05938.JPG.htmlhttp://www.thaivisa.com/forum/post-a87029-DSC05944.JPG.html
