Somsak Optic - Top Bloke

I don't know if I'm allowed to post positive things about a particular business on thaivisa, but one good turn deserves another.

On the advice of an old thaivisa thread, I bought my current glasses from Somsak Optic in Phuket Town. He speaks excellent English, gives free eye tests and his prices and glasses seem very good. I think I paid him 1500 baht last year for my current pair.

Anyway, my charming gf accidentally broke one of the lenses in the glasses and twisted the frame. "Mai Bpen Rai" I said through gritted teeth, and headed on over to Phuket Town. Despite my willingness to buy a new pair, Khun Somsak assured me that he could fix them and provide a new lens, all for the cost of 400 baht.

Well that in itself would be a great recommendation, but then we chatted for a little while and he told me he had business in Kamala that evening, and would try to drop them off for me if possible. At 6PM my mobile went, and sure enough Mr Somsak was waiting for me, with my glasses looking good as new. He even gave me a hard glasses case and cloth free of charge!

So thank you Mr Somsak - top bloke.

(If you want to find his shop, it's just off the main road heading south through Phuket Town. As you get closer to the big roundabout the road becomes one way (southbound). At the end of the one way section get in the right lane and turn right - his shop is on the left, about 10 metres up the road.)

Double Atm Withdrawals - Scam?

I save all my ATM receipt. All double check everything every 3 months. This time I find 5 double-withdrawals. The amount in home currency is identical and the second (the double) withdrawal is always 1-2 days later. And, on top of that, the doubles are the only receipts I am missing.

WTF?

Is this a possible scam/skimming?

Victims Of Atm Fraud

My Thai wife and I have been the victims of ATM fraud and savings of 120,000 baht have been stolen from our Kasikorn account – in fact, 100,000 was taken in one day via six ATM withdrawals late at night in Chiang Mai on 19th January. (Actually our card limit is 50,000 baht? So I wonder if the bank day goes from midnight to midnight?)
We can both prove that we were in Pattaya at the time. And when we opened the account at the Kasikorn bank, the bank issued us with only one ATM card that we still have.
The police have informed us that this type of thing is rife. There have been (and possibly still are) several organised criminal groups that use sophisticated 'skimmer' devices and wireless laptops that can cleverly copy the details on the magnetic strip of an ATM card. The groups have been operating in Pattaya, Phuket, Bangkok and Chiang Mai.
We deposited the money at the bank to keep it safe, and it has been stolen - not from us directly, but via the bank’s ATM, so the ATMs are obviously not completely secure from ‘skimmer’ methods. It is very frustrating and disappointing. The Kasikorn bank have told us they are instructing the Chiang Mai bank to look at the photo images, though I doubt they will show much as I imagine the criminals will have covered their faces. The bank seems reluctant to say anything else of the process, or take any responsibility. Anyway, be warned!

I notice that there was an article in the Phuket Gazette about a couple of similar cases. If anyone has had a similar experience, please make contact.

Anybody Want A Cat?

Lovely white tom cat, I think about two or three years old.
He has been hanging around the general area of my house for the past month or so and I have been giving him food because I felt sorry for him.
He is a very friendly cat and wants affection and he has obviously been abandoned by his previous owner.
I would like to keep him myself but unfortunately he and my female cat detest each other, why? I do not know, maybe he wants her out so he is numero uno and gets all the food and attention?
He almost had her eye out yesterday, quarter of an inch higher and he would have done.
So he has got to go, if nobody wants him I will take him and dump him at a temple, I don't want to do this because I think its cruel but I don't know what else to do with him.
If anybody is interested in taking care of him please PM me.

Water Truck In A Ditch

Sorry, no photo, but did anyone see the Green Water truck in the ditch on Patak Road near Soi Plukjae this morning?

With the rear end in the ditch, the front end out, facing against the traffic, my question is, how did it manage to enter the ditch at that particular angle? Must have been some spectacular loss of control, though it is possible the driver was trying a u-turn, I suppose.
