New Luxury Tax On Internet Usage In Thailand

I stand corrected: in checking all my dongles, I find that two of them are past their use-by date, and one is entirely too large to input into the serial port. Maybe I need a new serial port?

Just saw news feed on BBC News.com.
Thaksin has heard about this and is now on-route to Singapore. Want's to buy back his old company in view of increased revenue potential :-) #30Posted 2007-04-01 08:59:39
Most 7-11's stock thier dongles just to the right of the slurpee machines, on top of the unsold commemorative plates of Dick Smith towing an iceberg into Sydney harbour................N1 george

Good opportunity for the visa run operators here - they can have a few laptops on the bus and when you get over the boader into, maybe, a less developed country, enjoy tax free internet usage at 12Kbps ! Wow thats a key selling point !

He he that one ranks high up with the spaghetti trees of Italy.... I was almost believing it until I realised the Date!! However I am concerned you might be giving the government some new policy ideas!! I wa_ thinking the _ame thing. Hey my _ quit working on my keyboard. I read that they are impo_ing a property tax in addition to the building tax already in place which will be higher for unu_ed property. The tax will be ba_ed on the current value of the land. I _ee problem_ for older thai_ that have had their land for 20 year_ not being able to afford the tax and lo_ing their property. A few days ago I was informed that a higher tax had to be paid for pickups with metal racks on the back. The next will be the internet dongle tax. Thi_ April joke would be funny if it wa_n't po__ble that they might really do it. #41Posted 2007-04-01 09:38:45
The most frightening thing is that it could have been true .... totally unworkable .... but it could have been true ..... and then "oops", we didnt mean that.

I really love reading the knee-jerk posts from the TV users who fall for this every year...cracks me up! Thanks for an enjoyable Sunday AM!

The most frightening thing is that it could have been true .... totally unworkable .... but it could have been true ..... Exactly right. On reading it I'm thinking "this has to be wrong, must be a joke" .... but then ..... what if it isn't. With other recent developments it is not completely outside the realms of possibility. Very scary #46Posted 2007-04-01 09:50:55
This is more informative than the Bangkok Post. Thanks George

Well I must say that getting up having me coffee and looking at Thailands current events on Thaivisa this morning my jaw drop to the floor. I have lived here in Chiangmai 12 years and have pretty much seen it all. I to was about at my wits end when I realized what today is and that even though something like this could happen here in amazing Thailand I was so relieved to realize it's April Fools day. Fool me once shame on me Fool me twice shame on you. Good one! Thanks for a good start to this day

Oh yes, there were rumours of this going to happen... and not at all surprising that it did indeed happen...and the 1st of April is the best date to announce this... :-)

I pay 500 bht to TOT already for broadband....will this new tax be an extra on top of that? The only time a porn site was opened on my com was when I let a Thai use it.
