New labs built to support research of anti-bird flu DNA vaccine
Thai researchers push for the development of an anti-bird flu DNA vaccine which is aimed to establish immunity in poultry and from H5N1 virus.
Researcher of the Livestock Breeding and Research Center in Nakhon Ratchasima Province, Kamol Chaweewan (กมล ฉวีวรรณ), reveals that the development of the vaccine has been supported by the National Research Center sine 2004. The DNA vaccine is made of HA and NA proteins of the bird flu virus.
However, previous laboratory tests of the vaccine with samples of poultry have shown no immunity to the H5N1 virus in the samples. Plus, the development of the vaccine has been carried out slowly due to the lack of efficient laboratory equipments which meet international standards.
The National Institute of Animal Health has therefore constructed fully-equipped laboratories to successfully complete the development of the anti-bird flu DNA vaccine.

I wonder why they are going for a DNA based vaccine which is highly experiemental over a normal tried and trusted route?
There has been one DNA vacine developed against bird flu as far as I know http://www.in-pharmatechnologist.com/news/...flu-vaccine-dna There are other vaccines much further down the road using conventional vaccine routes together with adjuvants |
