Hi there,
not sure whether this should be here or in the technology section, but its a technology related question that i'm needing to buy a solution for in Samui. We're here for a few months so bought a local sim card for our GSM phone from MBK, but as it turns out, although local txting/smsing and phone calls are cheap, SMS charges overseas are horrendously expensive (20 baht each), plus we get bombarded with what look to be 50 advertisements a day via SMS. I'm assuming we've bought the wrong sort of card, subsidised with advertising for cheap local calls. So does anyone know a cheaper solution to SMS overseas, and if so, where do I buy a simcard for it in Samui and what should I be asking for? Many thanks #2Posted 2007-06-07 16:44:50

Many thanks Hi You can purchase sim cards from any of the 1 million phone dhops on samui, they are a fxed price as well of 199 THB, so be careful they do not rip you off, also 7-11 sometimes sell them if they are in stock. But the best bet is to get from Mobile phone shop with good english speaking staff, Zoom near buddy is a good example. Make sure they put you on the correct tariff, when i had pre-paid with Ais a while ago (on monthly statement now) i was on a special package where i got international sms for 5 THB. But like i said make sure they activated you card to english and then you wont get bombareded with messages, plus all the options via customer service for tariff changes ect will be also in english Hope this helps #3Posted 2007-06-07 16:55:51
Cheers Boater,
I got the impression from the crowd I got the card from that they didn't know exactly what we were after. Do you have a website or other details for the Zoom shop? And can they change our existing card or do we need a new one? Thanks #4Posted 2007-06-07 16:58:44

Thanks hi It all depends on what network you are on, with regards to Zoom, it is on the ring road between lamai and chewang very close to buddy. Big Shop, cant miss it, or any other mobile shop really on the island should be able to help ypu. #6Posted 2007-06-07 21:28:28
No need for such a complicated solution. HAPPY is the only network that charges 5 baht per International SMS. The other two, One2Call and TRUEMove charge 9 baht.
As aforementioned, the HAPPY SIM is 199 baht and comes with 50 baht credit. http://www.happydpro...l_idd/index.php Dial *1000 to go to the language change menu. http://www.happydpro...m/en/main2.html Watch out for txt ads with TrueMove.
