We are travelling to Phuket for the first time and staying at the Holiday Inn at the end of October. Could anyone tell me if its safe to have tattoos done in Phuket? Can anyone recommend an artist or what cost to expect?
With Thanks

I have had extensive work done by "An" at Siam Tattoo, on Bangla rd.. at entrance of Soi Easy. It is right below Dragon Disco..you can find him there after 3pm. He is an artist and does custom work as well as fantastic coverups. His shop is extremely clean and he is very professional. He has been my tattoo artist for years now, I wont use anyone else. Good luck and be careful, there are many in Phuket that claim to be tattoo artists. They carry around photo albums with nice pictures, but fail to mention they did not do the work. So, definately check things out before hand...

You may be knowledgeable about tatooing but don't get lulled into a sense of security just because the tatooist wears gloves. Make sure that the shop disinfects with substances that have bactericidal, fungicidal, and virucidal activity. (If the shop has customers, you'll probably see them spraying after a job.) Look for an operating steam or chemical autoclave sterilizer. The study reported that a properly functioning sterilizer was not evident in several of the tatoo shops visited.
A good tatoo artist is proud of his shop and keeps it clean. Proper equipment is expensive and the decent tatoo parlours have no hesitation in pointing the equipment out.
Remember, the shops are not regulated as they are in North America or the EU. No one comes in to check for operating sterilizers or verifies that needles are used one time only. Inks are not necessarily sealed for one time use. Nor are inks subject to the same QC as they are where you come from. (Think chinese suppliers.) If in doubt, ask. A responsible tatooist won't be offended if you ask in an appropriate manner. I've gone into a few shops to see for myself and haven't seen anything too troubling.

And for the price well under half the price it would of cost us at home.
Am has a gift when coming to the art of drawing it is natural to him. Free hand is brilliant.
