Village public health volunteers to inform people of bird flu prevention measures
The deputy minister of public health requests village public health volunteers to knock on every residence’s door to inform people of preventive measures on bird flu as well as to encourage participation in the constitution referendum.
Deputy Minister of Public Health Md. Walop Thai-neua (วัลลภ ไทยเหนือ) reports that high humidity during this rainy season has strengthened and extended the life span of viruses, especially the bird flu virus which has become a local pandemic. The Ministry of Public Health has therefore asked the village public health volunteers to help the authority campaign against avian influenza and inform the ministry’s officials of people suspicious of contracting the virus, especially those in Bangkok, Phetchabun (เพชรบูรณ์), Kanchanaburi (กาญจนบุรี), Suphan Buri (สุพรรณบุรี), Nong Bua Lamphu (หนองบัวลำภู), and Phichit (พิจิตร). According to the deputy minister, these provinces have reported of bird flu patients from 2004 – July, 2006.
The ministry has also instructed hospitals nationwide to separate patients with respiratory diseases from those with bird flu virus to prevent a spread of the viruse via the ventilation system.
The village public health volunteers will not only conduct public health work but will also address political issues including the government’s campaign for the charter referendum which is scheduled to take place on August 19th.
