The pursuit of happiness
APIRADEE TREERUTKUARKUL
The death of Sanguan Nityaramphong, secretary-general of the National Health Security Office and a pioneer of the universal health care scheme on January 18 brought shock and sorrow to his family and his friends in the public health sector.
The doctor died after a five year battle with lung cancer and liver metastasis. Despite his illness, the respected doctor managed to continue with his mission to implement the universal health care scheme that benefits the majority of Thais. His death, at the age of just 55, is a major loss to the nation.
Prior to his death, Dr Sanguan wrote stating his last wish was to donate his body to Ramathibodi Hospital's Faculty of Medical Sciences, from where he graduated. He also asked his family to establish a fund under his name to assist patients' support groups to help patients of chronic diseases take charge of their lives.
Dr Sanguan's commitment to reforming the country's health care systems over the past 20 years, and his modest and caring personality, made him much-loved by colleagues and patients alike.

How sad that these pioneers have been seemingly forgotten and politicians have been given all the credit for coming up with the format and the inception of it under the 30 baht scheme.
I for one knew of the some of the background as to where the idea came from, but i didn,t appreciate the length of time and the personal imput this group of working class heroes over the last 2 decades.
I would hope they are one day given the recognition they truly deserve and given full credit for their care of the poor to enable a better quality of life, accordingly, at the highest levels.
