There is an authorized dealer in Platinum mall that you could go to if you want a Daytona. The only proviso I would throw out though is that generally authorized dealers do not take trade ins, especially in any other brand that is not Rolex. Your best bet would be to sell the Breitling privately as, even if they did take trade in, they will not give you much money for it. Also Rolex does not have any problems selling out their watches, which is another reason a trade in at an authorized dealer is unlikely. And the Daytona (at least the Stainless Steel version) is a very hard to find watch that generally sells ABOVE the list price. The authorized dealers I have been to in BKK never had the Daytona in stock when I went in, and the ones that were there were already sold.

I think I know of the shop at MBK that Mikethevigoman is talking about. I just stopped and looked (wasn't really serious about another purchase), but I remembered they had some Daytonas. That might be the best bet if you want to do a trade in (of course I don't recall that they had any other watches besides Rolex), and want a Daytona. I think their Daytonas may be more expensive than at the dealer, but at the dealer you may just have to wait until they have one in stock.

The final bit of advice I would add is BUY one! :o I bought my submariner in 1999 or 2000. I paid like $1600 for it or something like that. I thought that was expensive for a watch at the time. A new one now costs $4800 from the dealer. Rolex keeps their value because the cost of a new watch is always going up.

I think that Omega shop by MBK has moved to Paragon?

I also went in search of the same shop some months ago, but its not there on that corner anymore.

Paragon (opposite Siam Square, next to Discovery Centre) has a good selection of watch shops, including Omega.

Whoops, meant Paragon not "platinum" (was thinking of the motorcycles when I typed that). Paragon has the Rolex dealer, Omega dealer, a Tag Heuer dealership, and not one, but TWO Patek Phillipe stores.

Without being anal...I think you're getting your movie stars mixed up :o

Steve McQueen wore Submariners and an Explorer 2, the "Steve McQueen" or "Freccione" fat or Orange hand.

Paul Newman wore Daytonas :D

All of which are on Razz's shopping list....Wish I kept my Daytona...but sold it 2 days after I bought it for a £1k profit... :D

If you google "dane rolex" you'll see the guy I sold it too. Top bloke and 100% straight. As he said to me quoting James M Dowling "The Expert" on all thing's Rolex..."You don't buy the watch..You buy the seller."

Finally, just to add...there are a few dealers of genuine watchces on the 3rd floor of MBK. I'm sure they'd do a deal. BUT, the majority of these watches have no box/papers/receipt which seriously effects their collectibilty/resale value.

I would have serious reservations about buying a Daytona in Bangkok. Some "fakes" even have copied movements that look real...caveat emptor..

Probably the best post you'll ever read about rolex's.

It is the "Paul Newman Daytona". I did not know that Steve McQueen was associated with the 1655 (Orange Hand) Explorer II. I have seen his mug on some Tag Heuer ads for the "Monaco" or some other reissue of Heuer's vintage watches.

If you manage to find a SS Daytona at list anywhere IN THE WORLD, let me know, cuz I will buy out the store and flip them for a profit. The Daytona's are always in demand. Frankly (aside from the Paul Newman Daytona) they haven't really interested me. I had a few chronographs, and it was fun to play with all the little buttons to make the stopwatch function go and all...for about a week. Then you really get bored with it. :o I like simple, that's why I went for a non-date submariner (because all the James Bond movies with a Rolex used a non-date sub.)

Go roam around Siam Paragon....NICE watch shops.  Rolex is a good investment and a GREAT kick around watch.  My daily watch is a Stainless Steel/18K Sub with a blue face.  BUT I would say never buy new.  I bought my Sub mid-2007 used and on line (www.timezone.com) for $4,995, it came with box and papers, retail is $8k.  Of course I live in the US which is where most of the sellers are.  I also have three Pateks and two Brietlings (one an aerospace)and some other stuff....

Good luck

Yet another example of why to "Buy now" with Rolex...the price just keeps on going up. Back in 1999 or 2000 (when I was shopping) that same 18k/ss submariner was $5k MSRP list, and you could get them used with box and papers for $3500. :o The list on the 14060 Submariner (non date which I have) was $2800, now it is $4800 or so. The watches have not changed (with the exception of a 'breguet overcoil' on the 14060m), but the price keeps on going up.

If you buy a vintage Rolex Submariner/Sea Dweller either a single or double red, Comex diver's watch, Orange hand Explorer, Daytona, Milgauss, or a military Rolex...it will be a fantastic investment especially if you have the box, papers, hang tags.

How many "investment's" can you wear everyday? :D

Rolex main shop (for Thailand) is on Wireless Road on the left heading towards Silom

There is one vintage watch collector's shop inside Siam Center / Centre Shopping Mall - just connected to to the Siam BTS. It is on the 3rd Floor (should be 3rd Level / Storey) beside Boots. The shop name is "Because I Like It". Their website is becauseILikeWatches.com - owner speaks English. Mostly are vintage watches from 1950s to 1970s such as Omega Seamaster, Flightmaster, Tag Heuer Monaco. There is a bunch of "new" watches by Zeno. Small shop but nice ambience. There are nice red bar stools to use and old wooden chairs.

Hope it helps. This is one amazing watch dealer he usually gets his watches from Europe and sells it in Thailand to Thai buyers. We would have assumed the other way around.

Just to give this thread a little "bump"....Has anyone looked at second -hand Rolex prices in Bkk lately?

With the exchange rate as it is, it might be better to buy some in the UK and sell them over there! ;)

Good luck in your search...I like your style :D

I looked in a watch shop in London and when I asked about "the papers" the dealer said "You're buying a watch - not the bit's of paper" - I walked out.

Anyone with a little knowledge knows the box and papers can make up to 30% of a watch's resale value...with classic and rare watches the percentage can be even more (you get into the world of "fake" history and replacement boxes and paperwork then...a bit out of comfort zone and $$$$ league! )

But I've been investigating a few thing's before my next trip "home".

Prices in Japan seem ok, and being a pretty organised type of people the watches tend to come in good condition with box and papers etc. The watches I've seen in MBK were nice, but not too sure about where they came from though? :whistling:

Might be worth joining and posting on some of the Rolex Forums? From memory I think there's a pretty well-respected watch dealer who is based in Bangkok?

RAZZ

EDIT - Just googled/remembered it's Reto Castellazzi who owns the Poor man's watch forum.

With box and paper the resale value defference is about 3-5% and is easier to sell too in future if i wanna to, 30% is way to far.

If i have a chance to travel to Japan i will get 1 from there too, at least the condition are better and price are also reasonable compare to Bkk. IMO
