Flying away is a bit extreme though, unless you're lucky enough to be going somewhere anyway. Bit of a numb nutty.........lets hope no soi dogs have pissed on your steak. #52Posted 2009-02-17 01:23:02
As this is indeed a predictable repeating topic, why bother opening a NEW 2009 I HATE SONGKRAN thread? This one will do just fine. Two months to go until THE HORROR!

Other countries are reaping the benefits of the Songkran stupidity. While I'm sure Songkran draws many Thais to major cities, it also repels those with the larger spending power (us). I just love to watch the children enjoy themselves....Songkran is a great day for them.....I guess you never see the happiness, laughter and squeals of delight. When I'm enjoying my day, I don't think about the Thai GDP...... Perhaps I should?.......no.... I think I'll enjoy the day with the kids. WTF. Is that a ''168 hour'' day? When you are happy all your days roll into one long one..... When you are whingeing I guess you count the hours.... Roll on Songkran.....yeeeeeeeeeeeeehaaaaaaaaaaaa...... #54Posted 2009-02-17 03:12:46

It ceases to amaze me that the so called 'educated traveler' didn't do his homework before moving to a place where local events piss them off so much they have to go to another country! <snip> Let me give you a clue. There are 357 non-Songkran days in every year. I'm amazed that an 'educated poster' didn't know that. You call yourself educated????? You're pretty uneducated yourself. I'm referring to "juniorboysown" as the 'educated poster' but you're replying to me. Wake up! #57Posted 2009-02-17 14:00:33
I,ll spell it out for you old boy.....as you are having some educational problems it seems..................Here is a clue for ya........How many days in a year? When you get that right.....then you can start taking the mick about other peoples educational status..............Old boy.

Songkran goes on for at least 8 days in Pattaya. 1 year = 365 days minus 8 days = 357 Of course the exact number of days was not the point, only that Songkran does not mess up the whole year. Get yourself a clue first before you start preaching. Understanding the context of posts will be a good start for you. Edited by tropo, 2009-02-17 15:29:55. #59Posted 2009-02-17 17:22:14
Is it okay to start complaining about this year's (2009) Songkran yet?
I always leave Thailand about a week before Songkran starts. And, people ask me why I don't stick around for the Songkran party each year. This thread explains it all. I have a choice of staying a few extra weeks to be abused by drunken louts, or going trout fishing on some lovely British Columbia river. In both cases I am immersed in water, but one is by choice while wearing waders, and the other is unintentional while trying to ride my motorcycle past a few drunken idiots. It's a no-brainer choice. Have a good time folks and try to stay safe. I'll be thinking of you all and WILL be missing a few things I enjoy here in Thailand. #60Posted 2009-02-17 19:36:31
I came across this in April 2006 outside a touristy outfit on Phra Ahthit, IIRC.

I love the qualifier "civilized Thais." They wisely didn't say all Thais. In Pattaya, the "civilized" ones are hiding with every other sane person during Songkran.

Songkrain is a bag of shit in pattaya.
i go up country for it, its more fun and more real. Pattaya songkrain, is about throwing ice cold water over people on motor bikes. total shite. #63Posted 2009-02-18 18:16:42
what did they expect Walt Disney World? Hey, you stole my line! Pattaya "IS" Disney World... for men. There is nowhere else on the planet like it. It comes with all the warts as well as all the great things. Stay or leave, but don't complain. Pattaya is what it is... unique. #64Posted 2009-02-18 18:20:07

Succinct ! - and accurate. I recommend merging this post and paethon's poster about the tradition of Songkran #65Posted 2009-02-19 08:13:16

many people that just can't adjust to Thailand hate Songkran ... (but most everybody that isn't a tourist hates Songkran in Pattaya)
#69Posted 2009-02-19 20:36:04
I like it a lot less than when I arrived 8 years ago. This is the 1st year that I'm actively planning to be somewhere else- Vietnam which I think is nearly as cool a place as LOS- but I just can't be bothered with it anymore.
Just getting old mebbe. #70Posted 2009-02-19 20:39:50
I love Songkran, I try and go someplace new in Thailand for Songkran every year!

Obviously a fake photo as there is grass or trees in the back ground.
This stuff was removed from pattaya many years ago and replaced with Half finished bulling projects and Baht bus driver sleeping areas. Sorry apart from the areas in the middle of the Sukhumvit high way, all ways good for the kids to play near.
