TOC now reporting Samak wont answer questions about the demo and has refused to give advice to the police
Posted 2008-06-20 15:05:41
Worryingly TOC has reported that Chalerm has stated he is not responsible for what happens in Bangkok and that what happens in Bangkok is entirely the responsibility of Samak.

Unfortunatly Thailand has still to learn the meaning of the words DEMOCRASCY and FREEDOM

The police seem to be pulling back now.
Posted 2008-06-20 15:09:55
TOC reporting police have pulled back to allow PAD to join.
Also speculating that the police and government have totally underestimated the numbers that would turn out expecting only about 40,000 at its height. The alst report on numbers was 100,000 at 2PM.

Update:
2.35pm : After achieving in surrounding the Government House, the protesters try to move police trucks that formed the barricade in front of the Government House. However, police told the protesters that they will move the trucks themselves.
2.31pm: Protesters declare victory in surrounding the Government House. 2.30pm : Waving the red flags, some 500 opponents of PAD march to where the PAD-led protesters are gathering near the Government House.
2.13pm : Protesters have all but circled Government House, with police commandoes making ways for their advance. However, those standing guard inside Government House walls vow there won't be any compromise and nobody will be allowed to cross over.
Most of protesters who are on the front line, confronting with police, were seen wearing masks in preparation in case police wear tear gas to disperse them.
2.12pm : Protesters achieve in breaking the police line on Nakhon Pathom Road and move closer to the Government House. They are now besieging the Government House.
2.08pm: Police clash with protesters on Nakhon Pathom Road again as the protesters tried to break the police line.
12.15pm : People's Alliance for Democracy's leaders; Chamlong Srimuang, Sondhi Limthongkul, and Somkiet Pongpaiboon (a Democrat MP) appear at the gathering of protesters at Nang Lueng horse racing stadium.
The stadium is less than 100 meters from the Government House. It seemed that Chamlong and other leaders sneak from the protest at Makawan Rangsan Bridge. The anti-government speeches at the Bridge continues.
1.29pm : Police re-erect the barricades which were scattered when the protesters break the police line.
1.27pm : PAD march reaches all police's inner barriers guarding Gov't House
About two hours of multi-pronged march, the People's Alliance for Democracy has managed to advance to inner barriers set up by police to guard Government House.
Tens of thousands of protesters are unarmed in the orderly march and about 5,000 anti-riot police, also unarmed, are deployed at barriers.
The main thrust led by Chamlong Srimuang and Sondhi Limthongkul has halted feet apart from the barrier at Nang Lerng. Anti-riot forces line up four deep behind iron dividers. After the police line, armoured vehicles are parked to deter the crowds.
Other main barriers are located at Makawan Rangsan Bridge, Misakawan Intersection, the Royal Plaza and the Marble Temple.
Few protesters have been seen to have sneaked pass barriers and reach Government House but not in significant numbers to lay siege.
1.22pm : Protesters at Benjamabophit Temple achieve in breaking police barricades and they are on Nakhon Pathom Road. Clashing with police continues.

Police took back, after Chamlong explained them that they don't have any chance.
Than Chamlong let the mob shout "Thank you police" for several minutes.

History shows when demonstrations of this kind build up as they seem to be inevitably there will be trouble. Despite the PAD saying it will be a peaceful march there will be those that want to cause trouble and once it starts the ending is always the same as the police have no choice but to do something. I hope it doesnt happen but that would contradict everything that has happened before.
Romania, If I remember right, they went into Parliament behead the Dictator and got democracy......
They did not behead the dictator in Romania - he and his wife were shot
Like it or not PPP won a democratic election - we can see that you would like violence to get your own way - that big a man in real life are we and are you prepared to behead the dictator yourself or are you a coward to sit on the sidelines egging others on?
Foreigners like you wanting to destroy democracy in Thailand if found out should be deported and all properties in the country confiscated and given to the crown!
If PAD want to remove the government maybe they should do it at the ballot box like civil members of a democratic society.
I may not like or agree with Samak et al but I would not condone viloence or a coup like small minded men

What is the actual point of this protest? Do the PAD seriously think that the Government will step down or are they hoping for another coup?

Breaking news:
Police cancel all blockades, PAD announces victory
BANGKOK: -- By 3 pm, the People's Alliance for Democracy announced its victory after police lifted all road blockades, allowing protesters to march to Government House.
Police stopped blocking protesters after a group of some 2,000 protesters managed to seize control of Phitsanulok near Government House.

Bangkok Post's Breaking News internet says about 1000 broke throught the last barricade and are approaching Government House. I'm watching TNN, don't speak and am trying to follow what is going on. Here is the Bangkok Post's site http://www.bangkokpost.com/breaking_news/b...s.php?id=128372

TNN has news reports with pictures of the use of nails to stop PAD supporters getting to Bangkok along with pics of huge tailbacks at PAD supporters get turned around. From what is being shown the scale of the stop em getting to Bangkok far excedes anything done previously either by Thaksin or the Junta when I was a frequent traveller between the North and Bangkok. Luckily I dont have to travel today.

- try another browser it may work then. If still not ok, try to surf with a proxy server.
Maybe your browser doesn't have the plug-in loaded (don't ask me which one, but months ago, it also didn't work here).
Anyone not able to see it, rapport your browser, location and OS, then other users, might can help.
- Must be amazing hot out there with the crowds and for some after 2 hours marching! Also for the police in full gear.
I think the police are with the people; against big scale corruption.
- Samak should call his proxy role an end, he would gain more points, going back to be a cooking TV chef.
As PM, he just looses face, big time. But we have one little, big problem here, Samak is apparantly still very deep
involved in the "fire truck scandal - still ongoing investigations"; and he said himself at the beginning
of his parlament PM time 4 months ago, that he want's all TRT=PPP=Thaksin-boys to help each other out on all ongoing corruption cases
(hence the constitution amendmend try, to let also Thaksin jump-ship once again any corruption court hearings etc.).
Guess a big reason why Thaksin choose him, for his proxy. You help me get out the court, I help you too.
Eye on Eye, but now Samak seams to be big time stuck outthere, that's why he doesn't want to take responsibility date so far.
Neither does the Interior Minister; Chalerm. Noone want's to be currently the black sheep, as deep down there, they know the
people are right in their cause.
Let's pray he (they) will not let his frustrations out on the demonstraters today, especially tonight, when it get's dark!
Also the pro-Thaksin, aggressive groups (1000+) out there, are to be watched closely and carefully.
- True we have over 100'000people on the streets now? Anyone got some figs?
Let's hope it remains peaceful!

It is pretty sad that a group of a few thousand undemocratic people (no election result that goes against them will ever be accepted) can hold a country hostage. They block roads, prevent people from reaching their work, they have been able to block the UN gates so help for Burma could not go out and today we have the march of the short fuses.
Even worse is that their leaders publicly stated that they prefer dictatorship above a democratically elected government. These are sick people, and the government should come down on them in full force. Everybody has the right to demonstrate, but Chamlong is a extortionist who is given to much freedom. First they let him paralize traffic and business near MKB center for months now they do not dare to exterminate him again. This probably due to the fact that he is backed by prem and friends. Luckily for us they are all old people, which will no longer be able to push their own agenda which held Thailand backwards for so long. I am neither a Abbhisit nor a Thaksin supporter, but any country from which the happy few are in the habbit not to accept a governement which has a 2/3 majority is in dire straits.
Investors will run for cover and they will end up next door in Cambodia or Malaysia and rightly so.
