If you open a bar in Isaan I believe the Thais would be the main customers , by aiming at farang customers you will be dramatically excuding the main source of income.

I really think "ray" has a lot of good insight concerning the bar business (and maybe not just Thailand).  Many have tried, few have succeeded.  The initial post indicates to me that the poster has "no clue" as to what this kind of business entails.  To me seems like a nightmare waiting to happen.  Be careful.  Find another way, think of something else.  I couldn't begin to describe the many farong opened "karoke joints" that I pass around my almost daily motorcycle trips in Issan.  They didn't make it and they are abandoned.  But if you go for it, surely, good luck, you'll need it, but let us know where it is, 'cause I'd be happy to stop in for a few whenever I might be in the area.

you are absolutely right.
if thais go out they tend to spend a lot of money (especially for food)
not like the foreigners, one food and some drinks per person, that's all.
if you open a restaurant for thais and the foreigners will come there regularly, you will loose most of your thai customers.

Isaan people love to eat

Self service all you can eat cook yourself buffet, late night music, happy days.

Watch the law particularly fridays and mondays. Friday the girlfriends need money and clothes for the weekend, mondays wives need money for shopping and the kids........

Live thai...................make an educated decision...... stay away from the destinations. I have lived in a village in Issaan for a year, i have  a new perspective on it all.

Never employ a girl....... Isaan men are the hardest workers i have ever known, although there are some extreamly admirable ladies, the girls are very horny and do not quite provide the service unless they are working for beer  chang and hoping for a marriage proposal or you are a extreamly attractive white skinned guy.........of thai origin

You only get one life........... dont set yourself up for a fall... from a height that you cant get back up from.

I quite agree working for Motorola on the CP Orange (True) Project based in KKN their were some heavy weights based in Kalasin.  A large number are Kings men. Who have been given land in retirement or somthing like that.  

However they still only want to pay Thai prices for the beer and food.  Not much profit margin in that!

I know Isaan business well: You have to invest some 100k bt to make a nice bar in Kalasin. Do it in style to attract the upscale people in Kalasin. The peeps will not visit a good style bar. Very important no other family members in your business. Family always destroys business. No credits to government customers.your targeted customers are teachers, government officials Tell police to take free drinks only once per month, give them the whisky etc in bags., let your wife bring it to them. No free drinks inside your bar. Pay Licence for Whiskey and Live music 20 k bt per year in advance. When Legasit comes around ask them to show official paper. Never sit in the bar and drink with customers, they will demolish you and your furniture soon.
