New bird flu outbreak in Sukhothai

Bird flu has been found at a native-chicken farm in the northern province of Sukhothai, raising fears of a new outbreak of the H5N1 avian flu virus in the country. Livestock Development Department Chief Sakchai Sriboonsue said a lab test on a chicken carcass from the Thung Saliam district showed the dead fowl was infected with the H5N1 strain. All 17 native chickens at the farm had been culled to prevent the disease spreading, Sakchai said. The department declared the area near the infected farm a bird flu outbreak zone to facilitate the disease control operation last week, when five chickens at the farm died, he said. It was the third outbreak of bird flu case this year. The first two were in Nakhon Sawan and Phichit in January. ''The department will work closely with health officials to prevent the virus being transmitted from the fowls to humans,'' the livestock chief said. The department will also inform the World Organisation for Animal Health today about the re-emergence of bird flu. Frozen poultry exports would be suspended. Agriculture Minister Somsak Prissananantakul has instructed stepped-up surveillance for bird flu as the disease usually flares up in the cold season. The country's first outbreak was in January, 2004. More than 60 million fowls died or were culled.

Thailand detects new bird flu outbreak

Thailand has detected a fresh outbreak of avian influenza among free-range chickens in the norther province of Sukhothai, media reports said Monday.

Livestock Development Department Chief Sakchai Sribponsue said lab tests had confirmed that a dead chicken from a family farm had died of an infection with H5N1, the virus subtype causing bird flu.

All 17 free-range chickens on the farm were culled and the district declared a flu-outbreak zone.

It was the third confirmed outbreak of bird flu detected in Thailand this year.

Thailand's chicken industry was hard-hit by the aviation influenza pandemic that affected much of Asia in 2004 and 2005.

At the peak of the epidemic in 2004, some 25 Thais were infected by the virus, 17 of whom died.

New case of bird flu found in northern Thailand

BANGKOK, Thailand - The deadly H5N1 bird flu virus has been detected in northern Thailand for the first time in 10 months, the agriculture minister said Monday.

Laboratory tests on Sunday confirmed one chicken was infected with the virus after seven poultry deaths were reported in Sukhothai province last week, said Agriculture Minister Somsak Prisana-anantakul.

The deaths occurred at a rural home where a family was raising 17 chickens, he said. The remaining 10 birds were killed as a precautionary measure and a 3-mile (5-kilometer) radius around the home was declared an outbreak zone and sealed off, he said.

"The situation is under control," Somsak said by telephone.

It was the first case of bird flu in Thailand since January, when two other outbreaks were reported.

Exports of frozen poultry from Thailand have been suspended since 2004.

Bird flu remains hard for people to catch, but health experts worry the virus could mutate into a form that passes easily among humans, sparking a pandemic. So far, most human cases have been linked to direct contact with infected birds. At least 245 people have died worldwide from the virus, according to the World Health Organization.

Strict Bird-Flu Control in Sukhothai and Nearby Provinces

The Disease Control Department has declared a district in Sukhothai Province a disaster zone, in order to facilitate the bird-flu surveillance program, while many countries have also stepped up their watch for fear of the spread of the deadly virus.

The Disease Control Department has named Tambon Tung Saliang in Tung Saliang District of Sukhothai Province a disaster zone for 15 days, following the finding of the H5N1 virus in the area.

The announcement is intended to enable health officials to control the virus spread more effectively.

Sawankalok Livestock Department’s Paopan Praneebutr and Sawankalok Hospital, as well as Livestock Department officials, have gone out to educate locals about the deadly virus, while collaborating with the Local Administrative Office to set up checkpoints to prevent the transfer of birds in the area.

Meanwhile, in Kampaeng Petch, Pran Kratai Livestock Department’s Somyos Puangto and health volunteers have gone out to spray disinfectant in the areas that are adjacent to Sukhothai province, to prevent the spread of H5N1.

More checkpoints have also been set up on all roads.

And, in Buri Ram, officials have confiscated almost 2,000 free-range ducks that have been transported without permit.

The owners of the birds have been charged with smuggling birds into bird-flu surveillance zone and are subject to a maximum jail term of one year or a maximum fine of 20,000 baht, or both.

ala the 2004 epidemic, it's spreading again...

Bird flu prompts mass cull

UTHAI THANI: Another outbreak of bird flu was detected in Nong Chang district yesterday, prompting a mass culling of infected chickens amid resentment among poultry breeders. The discovery came after five chickens at a farm in Thung Saliam district of Sukhothai became sick and died on Oct 27. Lab tests showed one chicken carcass was infected with the H5N1 virus. Provincial livestock officials disinfected bird flu-hit Ban Hua Khao, where the chickens died of unknown causes, culled scores more chickens and collected the carcasses for lab tests. The culling infuriated three poultry owners because the chickens were breeding stock and expensive.
Despite all efforts to contain bird flu, Sukhothai was hit again as the deadly virus was discovered on a fighting cock farm in Sawankhalok yesterday.
Agriculture and Cooperatives Minister Somsak Prissananantakul reprimanded the Livestock Development Department for the two-week delay in a lab test report on the bird flu outbreak in Sukhothai, which he said could worsen the ongoing situation. A war room has been set up at both provincial health offices to monitor the bird flu situation, according to the Public Health Ministry.

Health officials to discuss bird flu

BANGKOK, Nov 12 (TNA) - Public Health Ministry officials from nine northern Thai provinces will confer Thursday on the deadly avian influenza after the disease was discovered in two districts following the abrupt arrival of winter in recent days, a senior ministry official said Wednesday.

Disease Control Department director-general Dr. Somchai Chakrabhand said the government officials will meet in Phitsanulok where the the potentially deadly disease was detected in chicken carcasses and in humans several times in the past few years.

The meeting was convened after the deadly H5N1 strain of bird flu was detected in a dead fowl in Thung Saliam district of central Sukhothai province on October 28. Also, a number of birds were found dead of unknown causes in Nong Chang district of Uthai Thani province recently.

Deputy Public Health Minister Vicharn Minchainant said that the country if fortunate that no humans who have contracted bird flu have been found in the two provinces so far.

However, health officials are now closely monitoring the situation in the two provinces on a daily basis.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr. Praj Boonyawongvirot said his ministry had established a "war room" to assess the bird flu situation in the country on a regular basis and also to launch campaigns among the public to warn about the danger of the disease and how to respond to it.

A second province is officially infected...

New Thai bird flu case confirmed

Thailand has confirmed another bird flu case, the second this week, in a rural district of Uthai Thani, 200 km north of Bangkok, a senior agriculture official said.

"We have killed all the chickens in suspected areas after lab tests confirmed that a small flock of native chickens raised by a farming family died of H5N1," an official at the Agriculture Ministry's department of livestock said.

It was the fourth case of the deadly virus found in Thailand in 10 months.

On Tuesday Agriculture Minister Somsak Prisnanantakul confirmed the virus had been found in Sukhothai, 400 kms north of Bangkok, and more than 200 chickens were culled.

There were four outbreaks in Thailand last year but there have been no reports of human infection in the country since September 2006.

The H5N1 virus has killed 17 people in Thailand since 2003 and 245 people in total out of 387 confirmed infected around the world, according to the World Health Organisation. It is endemic in poultry in parts of Asia.

Scientists fear the H5N1 virus could mutate into a form that could spread easily among humans and kill millions of people.

9 Northern Provinces Warned of Bird Flu Outbreak

The Ministry of Public Health has declared nine provinces in the north at high risk of bird flu and is warning hospitals to isolate suspected bird flu victims and send the cases for further investigation.

Deputy Permanent-Secretary of Public Health Paijit Warachit has presided over a meeting with medical staff, bird flu experts, and officials to discuss preventive measures for bird flu outbreaks in nine provinces in northern Thailand including Phitsanulok, Tak, Petchaboon, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Kampaeng Petch, and Pichit.

Paijit stated that the ministry has now declared the nine provinces areas at high risk of bird flu, after one case was found in Sukhothai Province earlier this week. He further revealed that measures to deal with possible outbreaks have been prepared now that the weather is getting colder, which allows the virus to live longer.

He warned all hospitals to separate bird flu victims in isolated and sterile rooms and to send the cases for laboratory testing. However, he affirmed that no cases have been detected in the area until now.

Meanwhile, officials from the Livestock Development in Nakhon Sawan Province have examined various species of birds found in Boraped Lake to gather samples for laboratory tests. They have also sprayed germicide in the area as a preventative measure against the disease.

Malaysia suspends Thai chicken imports over bird flu

KUALA LUMPUR (AFP / 5 minutes ago) - Malaysia has suspended imports of whole chicken and chicken parts from Thailand with immediate effect following a bird flu scare in the neighbouring country, state media reported.

Agriculture Minister Mustapa Mohamed said the government stopped issuing permits for the import of Thai chicken as a precautionary measure after bird flu broke out in Thailand earlier this week, state Bernama news agency reported late Friday.

"Malaysia has imported 769 tonnes of chicken from the country for the period between September and November this year," Mustapa said, but added that the freeze on imports will not effect chicken supply in the country.

He said checks at entry points along the Thai-Malaysia border in the north of the peninsula would be stepped up to prevent smuggling of the chicken into the country.

On Thursday, Thailand confirmed a second case of bird flu in less than a week. The H5N1 virus was found in poultry in the northern province of Uthai Thani, 220 kilometres (135 miles) from the capital Bangkok.

Thailand, the world's fourth-largest exporter of poultry, has slaughtered millions of birds to halt the spread of the bird flu virus.

Five Suspected Bird Flu Patients Found in Surin Province

Surin Province has implemented measures against avian flu epidemic after five patients were recently discovered with bird flu-like symptoms.

Deputy Chief of Surin Public Health Office, Peerasak Polprueksa, has revealed that five patients are now under close watch as they are suspected of being infected with bird flu after handling poultry that died 7 to 14 days ago.

Two of the suspected bird flu patients are from Karb Cheong District, another two from Muang and Sanom districts, and one is Cambodian.

Residents in Surin Province are advised to clean their hands after handling poultry, to wear disposable masks, and cover their mouths with handkerchiefs when sniffing or coughing.

Meanwhile, officials of the Surin Livestock Department, the Animal Quarantine Office, and Kabcheong Public Office sprayed a disinfectant substance around fowl markets near the Chong Jom border that connects to Cambodia, to prevent an epidemic of bird flu.
