Fire At Santika Night ClubDeath Toll Rises to 62, 26 survivors still in ICU

this is a horrible way to go.... may all of them R.I.P.
Severe actions should be taken against the owner of this nightclub. There were not enough emergency exits, inflammable sound-proof materials on the ceilings, which are extremely dangerous and allowed to catch fire very quickly. I have been many times before to this club and it was frequented by a mixture of Thais, Japanese and other foreigners. #53Posted 2009-01-01 07:32:36
May God have mercy on all their souls! RIP. I have often been to this place and could well have been there last night.

Police said they were investigating what sparked the fire in the two-storey building, an upmarket nightclub. "We were all dancing and suddenly there was a big flame that came out of the front of the stage and everybody was running away," one woman told Reuters news agency. One man told the BBC that survivors leaving the club told him the fire broke out on the stage after fireworks were lit just after midnight. SO SAD My Heart and Prayers goes out to all on this very sad times when we should be starting a new only to have it taken away in a flash? God Bless #55Posted 2009-01-01 07:38:17
RIP
This is sad news for Thailand. #56Posted 2009-01-01 07:44:13
This is so sad but yet typical of Thailand. All overcrowding everywhere you go (with exceptions). When are they (the owners and or government officials) going to learn that over crowding and lack of fire exits or signs eventually mean death. Here in the states, I own an establishment and occasionally a fire marshall shows up to make sure we do not go over limit. We even have to have counters. Especially on big nights. Thailand doesn't seem to care. Do they even have fire marshalls. I've been there 11 years now for 2 month holidays and it is always the same. The same as the boats! Too many people crowded onto the boat or ferry and sure enough it happens. The boat sinks and people die. That is why I don't go to those "big nightclubs".
It is a sad story. #57Posted 2009-01-01 07:45:25
Been looking at the news this morning. Saw the coverage regards the fire. Looking at the pictures of the people burned and injured was shocking.
There we were out celebrating like so many others and having a great time while these people were burning, dying, scrambling to escape. To make it worse, those who have lost loved ones in that fire will have the memory brought back each New Year. Truly horrific. Very sad. #58Posted 2009-01-01 07:52:33
Terrible!
I just saw the news on the yahoo site. I passed by the Santika one of the previous times I visited Bangkok, and I actually thought of visiting it but never got round to it. Just last night, I was thinking how more fun it would be if I could spend New Year's Eve in Bangkok. It's really terrible. My condolences to the relatives of the victims, and wishes for a quick recovery to the injured. #59Posted 2009-01-01 07:56:54
Sad to see such a bad start for the new year, they just wanted to have fun and celebrate. Looking at all the vids taken from the scen, there are no medics giving oxygen for smoke inhalation victims, basic eguipment missing? Hawkup2000 is reporting that he left the Thaivisa party early, did the Thaivisa party continiou to the Santika? Sad news MC Can anyone confirm or deny that fellow members went on to the club after the party? #60Posted 2009-01-01 08:00:48
Filming dying people! Disgusting! Nice to start the new year with! god bless all the people theyr at Santika club. Gruesome, yes, but filming that and showing it on television and the internet might not be such a bad thing if it prevents more similar tragedies or even prevents one more death. #61Posted 2009-01-01 08:16:01
Will the government change the law now to ensure all public areas have adequate fire exits etc?....no.
Money is more important than lives in Thailand. In fact a week from now this will all be forgotton and it will be business as usual from Saturday. #62Posted 2009-01-01 08:16:35
This is awful news,.already sounding like lack of fire exits are to blame for most deaths/injuries,.something else we must be aware of in the los, safety standards are not from the west,. R.I.P to these very unfortunate people,.

What sort of half-moron sets off fireworks inside a crowded building?
Of course we can already imagine the headlines tomorrow "BMA launches crackdown on safety at entertainment venues" . Shutting the stable door as usual. Patrick #65Posted 2009-01-01 08:49:55
While this truly is a tragedy I'm not that surprised. Thai people have no idea about safety
May the victims RIP. #66Posted 2009-01-01 08:57:55
Very sad indeed. RIP
#67Posted 2009-01-01 09:06:30
Truly horrible tragedy. God bless all the victims and their families.
One can just hope the authorities and club owners will learn from this and prevent this happening again. #68Posted 2009-01-01 09:07:26
Very sad indeed, hopefully the authorities will start taking things more seriously now regarding fire and safety regulations.
#69Posted 2009-01-01 09:11:39
The saddest thing is that just 30 minutes of safety training for the staff could have opened other exits and greatly helped the evacuation. We see this sort of disaster far too often here in Thailand.
My condolences for the families who lost loved ones. #70Posted 2009-01-01 09:17:10
horrible news. horrible start to 2009 to the families and loved ones of those who died. my deepest condolences.
i'm still a bit shocked! been there a few times, know people that go there, etc.... awful awful news #71Posted 2009-01-01 09:22:08
Santika Club at Ekamai was on fire during the New Year celebration - early reports have at least 50 injured, and up to 50 dead. I could see the flames from my window - needless to say they were fierce. Where is Santika located in BKK? #72Posted 2009-01-01 09:24:55
This tragedy eerily reminds me of the fire in a New Jersey nightclub about 15 years ago that also killed several hundred people. The cause of that fire was fireworks that set a stage curtain on fire. So it just doesn't happen in Thailand. But in the United States, at least, laws were enacted to prevent this from ever happening again. We will see if this follows suit in Thailand.

This is truly a tradegy and my thoughts go out to the victims and relatives.
While this truly is a tragedy I'm not that surprised. Thai people have no idea about safety May the victims RIP. Too true. We live just a few minutes walk from Santika and could easily have been there last night. Instead we chose to go to Koh Chang. There was a firework display on the beach and people stood as close as 2 or 3 metres from the actual fireworks. I was telling my friends how dangerous it was when one of the rockets must have fallen over and exploded. A young foreign girl was obviously hit by something but luckily it didn't seem too bad because I saw her dancing again 10 minutes later. At the same party people were lighting Roman Candles and firing directly into the strong wind. Many of the fireballs were blown straight back into the crowds. #74Posted 2009-01-01 09:37:03
9.30 Now and nothing is being shown on Thai TV.
#75Posted 2009-01-01 09:43:52
My condolences to the family and friends of the dead and injured. These things are always very sad. The combination of alcohol, holidays and large numbers of people make these tragedies happen throughout the world.
