As it seems to happen with mouse movement I would install another mouse and see if it still happens before doing the Aero disable.

I am convinced it's Aero-related. <snip> I am now searching for ways to turn Aero off completely. <snip> its easy - check here http://www.howtogeek...-windows-vista/ Scroll down to Windows 7 Change the desktop picture to any static one - don't use slide show. #178Posted 2010-02-12 17:41:50
As it seems to happen with mouse movement I would install another mouse and see if it still happens before doing the Aero disable. Both the mouse and keyboard are wireless... getting their signals running from a USB device on the back of the PC. I'll turn the wireless mouse off and hook up a hard-wired one to see if that makes any difference. #179Posted 2010-02-12 21:25:04
I have the same problem occasionally Jai Dee, but i am still with XP.
I know what is causing my problem, I just don't know what to do about it I thought that it was a problem with the mouse same as you, but this is because you actually only notice it when you try to move the cursor. If I open windows task manager and look at the CPU useage history under performance I see that CPU useage has hit 100% when the freeze happens. I don't understand a lot about computers, but I have 2 CPU's and it only hits 100% with 1 of them. i would have thought that the other CPU would take over, but obviously not! The process that causes my problem is Phoenix.exe I'm not sure if this is a Firefox application or whether it is part of the system with my Novatel CDMA internet modem. This info may be irrelevant as I have not moved to W7 yet, but I posted in case it is useful Hope that you sort it soon #180Posted 2010-02-14 08:59:47
Well... replacing the cordless mouse with a new USB cabled optical mouse worked OK for a while... but this morning after checking my overnight torrent history and performance, the PC froze within 30 seconds of moving the cursor.

I don't know if this is related... but I just made an interesting observation... after moving the cursor to any non-sensitive area of the screen (not hovering over a URL link of something like that), the cursor disappears after about 8 seconds... and I have to move the mouse to make it re-appear.
Even replying in this forum window now... I currently have no visible cursor... unless I move the mouse. #182Posted 2010-02-14 09:55:22

You can disable it in control panel "change how the mouse pointer looks" and set it to "Windows standard system scheme" I had the same issue and I solved it Edited by webfact, 2010-02-14 11:20:46. #184Posted 2010-02-14 17:57:05
OK, I have now disbled Aero as the desktop theme and have no Aero theme driving my mouse pointer.
Another suggestion from the Microsoft Answers support forum was to change the powers options settings in Control Panel - System and Security - Power Options... from Balanced to High Performance. This is based on the assumption that there may be some CPU issues when waking up. We'll see how long it takes before another freeze... #185Posted 2010-02-15 11:42:22
Well that didn't take long... only a couple of hours before freezing again.
I left the PC to recover by itself... and returned later to find it locked up at the Welcome page... so I'm beginning to think the mouse is unrelated now. One other item of interest I found whilst scouring the 'net... the HP Pavillion P6185L was only released in Thailand... no other country. And there is (of course) no documentation or specifications available for it. #186Posted 2010-02-16 10:19:49
No idea what happened or how to change...
Last week bought Windows 7 Ultimate, everything fine untill this morning... I only ever use Firefox [installed 3.6] and untill this morning my search engine is Google.. Friend was using my PC last night and used I.E.8, now when I started this morning my Firefox has Bing Search engine. How do I go back to Google as search engine? I am using Win 7 Pro and every so often the CPU usage would jump to 100 percent on both cores. I got a hint when trying to open Firefox. It said it was already open. Somehow during the last update it managed to install twice or at least it acted that way. I uninstalled it from control panel and it disappeared. The strange thing is that it no longer shows in my program list but works fine when I click the icon. I'll see what happens when FF updates again. It shows that I'm running 3.6. ??

But I do believe I did have to change some power setting in Vista to get it running all night but too long ago to remember what. Using Acer laptop now and much appreciate the silent running at night (as in bedroom). #189Posted 2010-02-18 03:58:16

Enter "about:config" in the address bar, without the quotes. Accept the warning about guarantee, or something like it (I use FF V3.5 - no warning) Enter "keyword.URL" in the filter panel. Right-click on "keyword.URL" listed under "Preference name" and select "Reset". This is from memory so may not be the fix. #190Posted 2010-02-21 12:47:18
Well, if anyone's interested I think I have solved the problem... with the assistance of NVIDIA Support.
He suggested that the issue I was experiencing was not a general behaviour of the graphics card or the graphics driver... however, such issues could also occur if the display driver is not registered properly in Windows. So I downloaded the latest NVIDIA driver from their website to my desktop, then uninstalled the existing driver by uninstalling the NVIDIA Display Drivers from the Add / Remove programs and restarted the computer. I then totally removed the existing driver using a driver cleaner (free utility found here). I then restarted the PC in safe mode with networking and once the desktop was available, I double-clicked on the previously saved latest NVIDIA driver to install it. After re-starting the computer, all seems to be running fine and I haven't had a freeze in more than 24 hours now. I will now start to enable services again (wireless mouse, Aero, power settings etc) and see if the system remains stable. My cursor is visible all the time now so fingers crossed... #191Posted 2010-04-18 14:07:48
Just got a new notebook and specified Windows 7 (installed by an independent tech).
Can't get my Edge 3G modem installed. I receive a "c:\Windows\v\autosetup.vbs Line 10 Char 1 "The requested operation requires elevation" Code 800702E4 Source: WshShell.Exec Any suggestions greatly appreciated! #192Posted 2010-04-29 11:23:33
My 'quick launch' icons include Opera (my browser). I noticed today while downloading a large file, the Opera icon changes a shade of green to show the progress of the download.
A handy tip when you're working on other tasks while downloading. #193Posted 2010-04-29 19:44:02
