During the SARs scare I travelled to Thailand and upon my return several people asked me if I was concerened about becoming sick with SARs. I explained to them that more people had died in the US, the year before, from the flu than had died in Thailand from SARs. Although with this new strain of swine flue young adults are as susceptiable as children and old people.

If you donot get enough sunshine you may want to supplement with vit.D about 2,000 units a day will help your immune system and with all of the new reserch on vit.D this much will not harm you.

Seems to be some confusion with regard to catching swine flu by eating pork.  According to the CDC  "The CDC says that swine flu viruses are not transmitted by food. Properly cooking pork to an internal temperature of 160°F kills all bacteria and viruses."  Other prevention measures mentioned are just like any other flu prevention.... wash hands several times throughout the day and practice good hand hygiene, washing with soap and water or using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.  Also, avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth, as germs can more easily gain entrance into your body through those areas

Seriously, epidemics have happened all the time. Scientists have made us believe that they have all under control, a vaccin against everything, but nature is working and coming up with new threats. Let's hope they find another quick fix, but get used to the fact that our live is not as safe as scientists and technocrates believe.

I am in Mexico now. The mexicans says that there dies 100 of people every year of "unknown" reasons and nowbody care! The timing is good also, financial crices and all. The Mex Gov. just get 205 bill. Dollars to fight this "epidemic"!
And I am not suprice that the paranoid Thais will be the firts to isolation all that has been over there!
And only Thailand says that it spread by eating pork!

"yes the population must be reduced, yes it must happen now"

what a ridiculous statement! The world is not overpopulated, nor is there a shortage of resources. It's the same as tax monies, we don't need more, it needs to be used properly, meaning efficiently. Stop dumping 18 kilos of grain into an animal to get 1 kilo of meat, stupid, even 3 kilos of grain to get one kilo of chicken is stupid. There are so many better ways to do almost everything, the answer is not more of the same that got us into this mess in the first place. If dumping money into the schools would make a difference, why hasn't it done so thus far? This culture of consuming antibiotics and the breeding of disease through the food chain is stupid. I'm all for capitol punishment, kill the aggressor! For those that think the world is too crowded, then you should be the first to go and do so because it's your duty. Sure there is a time and place for everything, even killing, but to kill because it makes you feel good, ie. delicious, or others are in your way, step right up to the block. Not to mention the amount of oil it takes to breed these swine and avian beings. what a waste!
That's pathetic. The bird flu and swine flu is nature's way of "som num na".  :o

High alert for swine flu
Ministry calls for calm, says dangerous strain of virus not found in Thailand

Dr Praj Bunyawongwiroj, the minฌistry's permanent secretary, said he would not recommend people to stop eating pork, but noted that humantohuman transmission was possible through direct contact of body fluids or mucus through sneezing and coughing.

Citing a comparative study, the doctor said 80 out of 1,000 people infected with swine flu had died, but 250 out of 400 of those sickened with bird flu had succumbed.

Swine flu can attack both wild hogs and farm pigs, or other types of swine, he said, adding that the H1N1, H1N2 and H3N2 strains possibly found in Thailand could not be transferred to humans.

I did not realize how dangerous this virus is, so it can be contracted by air born sneezing from people infected and eating pork, similar to mad cow disease?
you seek to spread panic wih your uneducated reply, eat vegtables or you will end up one yourself

One problem with Thailand is almost everyone will come into work unless they are on their death bed. There are few places that have pay for sick leave and many others that will fire you for not showing up. Last month my Thai teacher showed up coughing and sneezing saying. Kor Thot Pom Mai Sabai wannee! I pretended I had an important document to attend to that required I be out from school for a few days to help him save face and me from getting sick.

Glad the Thai govt. is thinking about Mexicans flying into Chiang Mai Airport on non-existant flights...

Guess they forgot to think or mention about Suvarnabhumi.... :o
People change planes and could have been in Mexico 2 days earlier, just because they don't have direct flights does not mean exposed people will not arrive there. Anyone arriving that has been in the infected locations should be checked out, just have a look at their passport and travel dates...

Yes - that will give the immigration clerks at the airport something more useful to do - order them to check all the stamps and dates in each arriving foreigner's passport to find out which countries they have visited in the last 2 weeks - much more fun than counting the days on previous Thai entry and exit stamps to make sure they add up to fewer than 90......
It will also help to reduce the waiting time in the lines at immigration too.....

Take everything with a grain of salt (although pork is generally salty anyway)

It should still be fresh in everyone's memory "don't worry about bird flu in Thailand"

WHY?, well it's bad for tourism.

Although recent events seems to have take care of that haven't they :o

How many deaths and hospital visits does it take to qualify for a pandemic? In Thailand nobody really bothers much about the DVSV1 (drunken vehicle-borne suicide) virus, which annually accounts for many more deaths than bird flu and swine flu combined, doesn't it

Prediction: the first cases will show up in Thailand within 7 days of today. Unless they CLOSE the airports, this is a done deal. This is an airborne virus in more ways than one.

Jingthing.

Agreed, the World is only 24 hours wide by plane now.

Anyone traveling to Thailand from Mexico or southern US states via another country could have the virus and contaminate several others on a plane journey.

That is how it has spread easily to Europe/Spain.

I flew to Thailand during the Sars thing and people were wearing masks then.

There is no vacine for this strain and won't be untill they can figure out and manufacture one and that will take at least 6 months.
If you buy Tamiflu over the Internet it will probabaly be fake.

This is the obvious and sensible way to stop global warming. Probably it is the only way, but it violates religious taboos, and politicians like Fat Al Gore will never discuss it.

I don't suppose anyone bothered to read up on the  virus presumed to be the cause of these illnesses. Although primarily a "swine" strain it includes avian and basic known  flu components as well. It is not purely swine. This may explain the human to human transmission mode.  The human immune system will adapt as well once it is exposed.  Has it occurred to anyone that a reason why the  virus isn't killing anyone yet in the USA or Canada is that the patient's immune systems combined with decent  living & health conditions enable the patients to fight off the infection. That's a rather positive aspect that is being missed.

People do not die from the flu: they die from complications and other disruptions brought on by the flu such as pneumonia. If you live in an area filled with heavy particulate matter in the air and poisonous fumes, your lungs are going to be damaged and more susceptible to pneumonia. I'd wager that  those  living out in the middle of nowhere Isaan and Surin are going to be just fine.  Large city dwellers are a different story. It will be interesting to see the panic that sets in and the "superior"  people of Bangkok flee to  the rural areas.  Will they be welcome. Oh the poetic justice.  mind you, there are a lot of ifs along the way and  we probably won't see that until next fall since flu season is coming to an end.   In the meantime, more people will die from hepatitis and dengue in Thailand than flu related illness. Seriously now,  people are panicing in TV about  the flu but are not worried about dengue? Priorities are a bit reversed there.

Appologies, I understand and will pipe down now I promise but are Global Pandemics and the spread of them not related to or affect the worlds population?

I just felt some previous posts suggested over population, migration, intensive farming etc as causes and population control as a means of controling such Pandemics.(Just seemed a bit exteme to me) Anyway, I really dont wish to be anoying and hope you dont mind me asking.

Thanks , Smallprawn.

Tell us how you really feel .... I guess you would really hate me, I was once a cook in a 3500 man camp in the oil sands of northern Alberta... and all those guy's would eat is meat...

looks like we where killing two birds with one stone ...... vegetarians didn't last long up there. ..... Sorry for being of topic.. but if Gr8ldanielle wants to get in to this, come on over to the food forum and we can really have some fun....  an to answer your question about schools funding ... it is always in the best interest of who ever is in charge to keep the general population, poor and uneducated... it makes them easier to control......

Someone or something has got to do something or the future of all of us that call this rock home are looking at a very sorry and short future. So I have mixed feelings when I read this type of article, yes I want my family to be safe and to have a future, no I do not wish suffering to others, yes the population must be reduced, yes it must happen now  - how to balance when all the signs are that we must take drastic actions and quickly?
If we don't do something then nature will.
Sorry if slightly off topic but this is something I think about more and more with an increasing sense of frustration.

Don't worry, you are not the only one thinking it.

We could start by charging the Pope with crimes against humanity and bringing Countries like Canada up in International courts, for paying people to breed (family allowances, baby bonus', Child Tax Credit, etc.

Yes, dear Mod.

In an revolutionary scientific outbreak, UK has advised that sneezing and coughing can spread the disease. Also, disposing of your used paper tissues can help contain it.

Just look  here  what knowlegable saviors we have to look after us.
