I am going to need major surgery on my back (a lumbar Laminectomy).

Has any member had a major operation in Bangkok and did they have any problems.

Has any one recommendations to best hospitals to use and I need a good back (orthopaedic ) surgeon if anyone knows one

I've not had major surgery done in BKK.....but I've been a longtime / frequent patient of Bumrungrad....and have never had occasion to be unhappy with the service or the doctors. I'll recommend that you check out Bumrungrad Hospital.

It might be worth consulting a neurourgeon for this type of thing ..possibly microsurgery etc..

Totally agree with Bumrungrad Hospital

Make sure you get an experienced surgeon though . Can't recommend in Thailand but if you want a recommendation in the UK PM me

Dr Panya at Bumrungrad. Very competent done my knee ligament replacement - no issues / complications i think a few on TV have used him and he always comes recommended. However I am not sure if he specializes in your problem worth an appointment tho.

Although I don't particularly like Bumrungrad as a hospital - Too busy, Too Big etc. I find Samitivej on suk 49 to be more relaxing and friendlier.

A year and a half ago, the (foreign) partner of a good friend (Thai) of my Thai partner (got that?) suffered a cerebral aneurysm and was taken to Bumrungrad where he received excellent treatment. The staff was great, the Drs (and many of the nurses) spoke English, and translators were readily available.

Not even two weeks ago, my partner had almost the same problem. We went to King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital, the Thai Red Cross hospital on the campus of Chulalongkorn University, as he is a Thai citizen and has the "yellow card" insurance program. I can say that the treatment was identical in every way to Bumrungrad. Needless to say, the cost to us was minimal, however I feel certain that, even for a Farang, the costs would be considerably lower than Bumrungrad. As it is a University teaching hospital, the staff are all excellent. All of the doctors speak fine English, as do most of the residents and a number of the nurses. Many of the doctors who teach and do surgery at Chula Hospital move on to Bumrungrad, BNH, Samitivej, and others to earn extra money after their teaching day is done. While Chula Hospital doesn't offer the deluxe rooms / suites or the dining options found at other BKK hospitals, I can tell you that the ICU there looks almost identical to the one at Bumrungrad and the service is outstanding...at a fraction of the price.

Should I ever need medical care, I would feel very comfortable there.

I had major surgery last Jan at Bumrundgrad (ventral hernia). I traveled from China to have it done there. This hospital is first class and would highly recommend them for treatment.
I have been going there for several years for any treatments. Even when I lived in the US, I always traveled there for any medical issues instead of using the US hospitals. Bumrundgrad is far superior.
Yes they cost more, but you get what you pay for.
