Yesterday i went to hospital to check up for new work permit, and the nurse told me that now according to the new polics,
the medical check up should include the item of VDRL, specially for checking the syphilis, the immigration officer will not go on the work permit application if the medical certificate not comleted.
so TMD weird....

It has been reported for the last several months that a blood test is now required for the syphilis portion of the medical report (it was always on list but blood test was not previously required).

We have had many reports that you need to have a blood test for syphilis to get a work permit now.

Strange medical certificate for a WP ??....never had to do one yet, but then again we have to do an offshore medical every year, so maybe this counts, but certainly not tested for STD's.....Is this a requirement for new WP or applicable to extensions as well..??

At least in Chiangmai for the last 3 years they no longer requested a medical certificate on my extensions.  Neither Immigration nor Labor.  No explanation given.

probably just another way to extort some cash out of you, I really don't see the relevance as you will not be a drain on the health service here

have been getting paperwork together for my work permit. all done (almost), went to job office in samutprakan. two forms needed. more stuff from company and medical check.

med check includes: (according to translation of form by my thai asst)
  Tuberculosis
   Syphillis
   elephantitus
    drug test
    leprosy
gonerrea   (i think that was on it)

and some more that i can not remember.

so does this mean i need to get some cash ready for the doc?

Yes - but cost will depend on where you have it done - a few baht at local clinic and a few hundred at a hospital.  Believe there is now a blood test required so that will make the price a bit higher than in the past but it is a relatively cheap test.

If you're getting a work permit you'd be eligible for Thai Social Security.  Since the health benefit does cover
pre-existing conditions, you could at some point be a drain on the system.

I suspect it has more to do with it being a communicable disease.

I think the law states that applicants need to be certified free of 6 specific diseases.  I believe your list is correct, except that I don't think gonnorhea is included but believe that alcoholism is in there along with drug addiction.  For my first WP a lawyer took me into a small seedy looking clinic that was heavily promoting VD cures outside, where a seedy looking doctor, who might have been a crack freak, looked at my arms and legs to check for junkie needle track marks but didn't check for anything else.  The medical requirements for PR are the same but must be done in a government hospital.  When I went for that they insisted on a blood test for syphillis but the rest of the test comprised the doctor asking, "Are you feeling well today", followed by a trip to the cashier.  It is all a big joke but at least not too onerious and it helps out the medical profession a little bit.  I think you have to get a medical certificate for each new work permit, i.e. each change of job.
