he's not exiled, just a typical criminal that doesn't feel like serving time or standing in court to face the other charges.
So not quite on the exiled hero type level...more along the lines of the guys who go hide in Spain or Brazil.
It seems you have swallowed the BKK Post/Nation agenda hook, line and sinker. I keep hoping that traditionally Democratic Farang's will be more discerning when faced with that unending barrage of anti-democracy rhetoric from their Thai English media.

Sure can tell old Thak doesn't have a clue what George Bush is saying. I'm not even talking about Bush making sense but Thaksin cannot understand english.

He sure doesn't... totally oblivious to all...and Bush was even speaking more coherently than he usually did.
That extraordinary amount of head bobbing he did (which is, as you say, nothing more than feigned comprehension) is usually only observed in those bobble-headed toy dogs seen mounted in cars.
But in lieu of their shared Texan background, a bobble-headed armadillo seems more appropriate...

Red Shirts to hold Thaksin birthday party; 'Truth Today' returns to air
BANGKOK, July 15 (TNA) - Leaders of anti-government United Front for Democracy Against Dictatorship (UDD) said that the group will hold a birthday party for ousted former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra who lives in self-imposed exile and will turn 60 on July 26, while its famous talk show programme will return to the air again from Wednesday.
Shinawatra Haboonpat, a leading UDD member, revealed that the birthday celebration will be held at a private venue in downtown Bangkok from morning until late evening and Mr. Thaksin will make a phone call addressing to his supporters at the evening party.
UDD key leader Natthawut Saikua said Thaksin supporters in At Samat district of the northeastern province of Roi Et will gather to recall the former premier's successful performances during his administration.
Regarding the Red Shirts' campaign to gather one million signatures to ask for a royal pardon for ex-premier Thaksin to allow him to return from his self-imposed exile, Mr. Natthawut said that a number of names have been already collected but the group is opening the process for more petition signatories from its members in other provinces.
Mr. Natthawut said that the names collected by regional leaders will be sent to the UDD office on July 31 before submitting the petition to His Majesty the King on August 1.
Meanwhile, key UDD leader Veera Musikapong revealed that the Red Shirts’ famous political talk show 'Truth Today', which has been off air since the Red Shirt's D-Station was blocked by the government following last April’s political chaos, will be on air again via the new TV channel called 'People Channel' from July 15.
Mr. Veera said the programme runs from Monday to Friday between 9.30-10.30 pm with key UDD leaders hosting the programme. (TNA)

At the time of the iron curtain, many countries behind the iron curtain did
have media outlets with names like that!
Is the color red of these groups supposed to stand for the same, outdated ideology or
are the "powers to be" simply hiding their real agenda behind a "socialist" ideology
to make their quest more palatable to rural poor and for the "working class hero's" -
like the cabbies in the capitol and elsewhere?
...some of the slogans ... make my hair stand up... all too familiar!
Thankfully not being too familiar with the workings of a Thai court, can anybody guess how long it will be before the asset case comes to a conclusion?

Discerning farangs have more than just the BP and Nation as sources of information.
How parochial of you to assume we can't think for ourselves in a foreign land.
Propaganda 101 Attempt to make any dissenting voices seem uninformed or less intelligent.
Typical criminal I disagree with,
Better described as a high end white collar criminal,
latterly specializing in governmental policy corruption,
who just over-reached.
Dubai 60th birthday party for Thaksin
Writer: BangkokPost.com
Published: 16/07/2009 at 03:19 PM The chairman of Puea Thai MPs, Chalerm Yubamrung, said on Thursday afternoon that he will travel to Dubai, the United Arab Emirates, to attend the birthday party of former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.
Thaksin turns 60 on July 26.
Mr Chalerm said he had no knowledge of Thaksin’s reported intention to return to Thailand to fight legal cases, to run for election in Chiang Mai and to take the leadership post of the main opposition party -- as claimed by Puea Thai MP for Chiang Mai Surapong Towichakchaikul.
