How old is too old for the draft, my wife's son is living and working in Australia, he is also doing a university degree and is married to an Australian woman, he is in thirties and is afraid to come back to Thailand and renew his Thai citizenship, he is afraid that if he comes back he will be called up for military service and be kept away from his family in Australia.
Firstly you don't 'renew' Thai citizenship. He still is.

He can renew his passport in Australia at the Thai embassy any time, or at a consulate by appointment. He can travel to Thailand with no issue.

All men 30 and over are automatically exempted from duty.
Thank you for the correction and the helpful answer.

As a matter of curiousity, are there any members of the Thai military service who joined voluntarily? Are there any patriotic enough to choose to serve thier country, or is the Thai military totally conscripted?

Sure there are. And many do volunteer, even if they do become grunts. Conscription only happens in a district if there aren't enough volunteers to fill the regional quota.

Additionally, university grads can volunteer for 6 months and avoid conscription (which goes for 2 years if they are unlucky enough to get the wrong coloured ball). It is an option that people do use.

When his draft papers arrive, put a dress and some lipstick on him. I understand they don't take katoeys.

I've definitely seen a whole platoon of reservist kratoeys whilst teaching on a military base. We were laughing about it, saying that they should have their own regiment called Tood Rangers (a play on words; "tood" with a short/abrupt vowel is slang for kratoey and "tood" with a long vowel is slang for arse).
