We have a friend in BKK whose daughter 9 years old. Recently was diagnosed with Swine Flu.
She was quarantined for 2 weeks while getting medication. She has recovered & will go home today.
I was just curious how many here may have had it or know of anyone who has?
Here in the states we know of 2 cases of swine flu in our circle of friends & co-workers.

I was diagnosed with swine flu about a week after arriving back in New Zealand June this year; consider myself above-average health/fitness-wise, compete in triathlons and distance swimming and have not had any type of flu/cold for many years, have no ongoing health conditions either, which seem to be common in the fatalities I've read about eg obesity, heart. diabetes, asthma.
Anyway - had wild and crazy fevers full-on for maybe 36 hours, shivering in bed with elec blanket on, then bucketing sweat, shaking all over. Survived on paracetamol and lots of fluids. Felt tired, weak for about another week and almost two weeks till i could train again (running/cycling) at about 75% effort. In summary, really knocked me about. All ok now though and no lasting impact.
People I was staying with in NZ - she in late 40s missed out altogether, he late 60s was laid up in bed for over a week and was still recovering when i returned to Thailand 3rd week July.

PLease please some one please advice!
My little daughter is 8 months. She's with her mom in Phayao, chaingkam about 2-3 hours from chiangmai.Went back there for holiday since 6 weeks ago. Im far away.
She's been sick since Tuesday last. Started with slight flu, then fever, then cough 2 days later.Flu apprently is drying up/not flowing past 2 days
She went to hospital Tuesday, clinic wednesday, hospital again Thursday, then clinic again Friday. Sat Sun at home. Monday morning was at hospital and now on drips.
Her fever touched 39 past few days w/o paracetamol, 40today when the doctor stopped it for awhile to see the heights of the fever.
Shes on ampicillin now, fever is controlled but breaks out in sweats, irritable and voice has changed
Doctor took her bloood for tests and had an x ray today( results shows nothing on the x ray)
Ive checked here and host of other sites for help:
cdc.gov/h1n1flu/
Can anyone tell me please wats wrong with her?
How long does blood results take to come back in Thailand? Apprently will take 4-5 days as it has to be sent to Chiangmai
Would it better to send her to Chingmai for treatment?
Any hospitals that are familiar with H1N! in Chiangmai?
Cant they do any tests with fast-1 day result to see if it is H1 N1?
Will she be allowed to board a plane? I was thinking of taking her back to my country(neighbouring) for treatment.
What is the best treatment or advice? Thanks to all in advance.
Worried sick -only precious daughter

Muji - My local government hospital is checking patients for type A influenza. It takes about 3 hours to get results. If the test comes back positive it's assumed to be H1N1, since it's currently the most dominant flu virus in Thailand. I don't know specifics about the test, but think it's a nasal swab. If the hospital caring for your daughter has the facility to complete the test, presumably they would have already done it?
Regarding transferring your daughter to Chiang Mai, I think it's true to say the medical treatment and facilities are generally better in the larger cities. If your daughter's condition is deemed serious enough, and if she's in need of specialist equipment like a mechanical ventilator, I would imagine she would be transferred to another hospital.
As to Thai medics competence at dealing with H1N1 - they are unfortunately getting plenty of practice. According to recent articles in the press, they've been instructed to prescribe tamiflu for anyone suffering H1N1 symptoms.
You mention an x-ray being clear - was it a chest x-ray? If so, that's a good sign, since infected lungs seems to be the most common symptom amongst people suffering serious complications.
Although, I understand your concern for your daughter, I don't think it would be advisable to fly her to your country. In her condition it's also very doubtful that she would be allowed to board a plane.
I hope your daughter makes a full recovery. I have a 10-month old son myself, and share your concerns.

We have had two cases of employee’s children getting H1N1 and I know of another case from ISB. All of this happened well over a month ago.

best friend (an ex doctor), asthmatic, works in a kindergarten; diagnosed swine flu and given antibiotics due to complications (pneumonia); most of the kids in the kindergarten obviously...
friend of my daughter's came back from holland with swine flue
ny niece in boston (asthmatic) hospitalized a week for support care,
so far two people on the kibbutz.
firend of mine's uncle a cardiologist i think he was stopped in the states at the airport since he didnt feel good, now hospitalized (was on way to israel),
basically the same amount of people that get flue but much earlier in our season here; but the same people that have complications. unfortunately, my daughter is also very prone to any flue/cold and she is also asthmatic, and school starts in one week. within one week, usually, there is always an outbreak of flue/and or stomach problems (we are prone here to various summer intestinal things in this country) aince most of the kids were previously in scouts hiking groups or camps or malls hanging out.
son just in army training one week, waiting to see how the army here handles outbreaks which i am sure will happen (crowded less then clean conditions, stress, lack of sleep, poor food and too many 'cry wolf' illnesses so that when someone really is ill, its often ignored until too late.) possibly they gave flue A vaccines since all new trainees get jabs but no clue to what hey got jabbed with (tetanus and some other things, he hasnt a clue). army doesnt tend to report things in real time until there are groups of ill soldiers and then parents get involved so we may never know ...

Muji,
Hope all is better now, I saw your post on other thread about swine flu. I'd concur with Jowel's advice, don't take a flight. No point in giving Tamiflu, particularly at this stage, as it will probably cause more harm than good, giving her body another thing to fight against. Our 11 month old had swine flu when we went to UK and got well again with absolutely no medication, breastmilk is the best sustenance if she's still feeding from mum, cooling with damp flannels worked for our son. It is scary when your baby is ill and one wants to do everything, but the body is the healer and just needs support. Our son had a chesty cough for almost 2 weeks, then it just disappeared.

I had the H1N1 swine flu. I'm in my late 20's and regularly exercise and eat a healthy diet. I've lived in Bangkok for a year and haven't left the city for 4 months. It started with a nagging sore throat that developed into an annoying, light cough for a few days. Then, all of a sudden I woke up the next morning feeling like a truck ran me over - very weak, bodyaches, no energy, congested, heavy cough, and my skin was hot and sweating but I felt cold almost to the point of shivering and wanted to be wrapped in blankets. I went to BNH hospital and found out I had a fever over 38C. The doctor concluded I had an upper respiratory infection. They also swabbed my throat and within 30 minutes confirmed I had type A flu. For an additional fee (3000 baht) they re-swabbed my throat and sent the sample to the national H1N1 lab for confirmation of the swine flu, but results would take 3-5 days. I was given lots of medicine including Tamiflu which cost me 300 baht per pill! (the doctor made it seem like this was a standard price. 3000 baht on H1N1 testing and 3000 baht for 5 days worth of Tamiflu...hmmm is BNH ripping me off or is this swine flu business a money-making scheme?) My fever broke later that day and my chills stopped. Over the next few days I constantly felt weak, tired, had bodyaches, a constant headache and cough. Everytime I slept or took a nap I woke up in a very unpleasant pool of sweat. After 3 or 4 days my congestion and cough were much better and the sweating stopped. A few days later the bodyaches were gone and my energy level finally came back. It was at this point that I got the results that confirmed H1N1. A couple of days later I felt back to normal.
In summary, it took about 10 days from start of first symptoms to reach 95% recovery. It felt like any other flu I've ever had with the bodyaches and tiredness. The doctor was indifferent about sending a sample for H1N1 testing saying that the results would not change his treatment. In fact, he recommended to test for H1N1 only if my condition got worse over the next few days. This doesn't make sense to me because H1N1 confirmation testing takes 3-5 days. So if my condition got worse and I got tested for H1N1, it would have been a full week before getting the results. By that time my condition could have gotten much worse and what help would knowing that I had H1N1 do at that point? I guess I don't see the medical advantage of knowing that you have H1N1. It is treated like any other flu.
My recommendation regarding the H1N1 flu is to see a doctor at the first signs of feeling sick. I think I made a fairly quick recovery because I went to the doctor as soon as I felt bad. My upper respiratory infection was treated quickly and did not complicate my illness like I originally feared. Also, I spent the entire week resting and sleeping as much as possible. Too many times I see people trying to "tough out" an illness and continue to go to work. Why? You are only prolonging the illness and possibly infecting others. Your pride or job is never as important as your own health.
Good health to everyone!

I had swine flu a few weeks ago in Bangkok.
I never went to the doctor , I just got some flu medicine at the pharmacy,
It lasted only 3-4 days, had fever and coughing , and problems with my stomach.

Im just recovering from it - - Thought ide check here to see what other peoples thoughts were about it. Anyway it kicked the stuffing out of me big time. Sore throats, excessive green flem, coughing, head aches, stomach problems, bucket sweating in bed, with hot and cold fevers, and generally very weak. I didnt take any special medication only paracetamol and common cold tablets, and plenty of fluids. A favourite drink is cut several lemons and squeeze them into a cup add hot water and then add some honey This is a great source of vitamin C and the honey helps with the sore throat and gives a little energy back to the system. To be honest you should go see a doctor, but im to stubborn to do that.

Not sure if was swine flu as I didn't visit the doctor, but had my first flu in over 10 years just a little over a week ago. Same symptons as everyone has already posted. Weak, throat and nasal problems, one minute you're sweating bullets and ten minutes later you're piling on the clothes and blankets, I think my bed gained about 12 liters of sweat, etc. Only put me out for 3 days, and a week to fully recover. No idea if it was swine flu, but hopefully, because that would mean I now have my immune system built up for it.

Hey, me too! Except I always put brown sugar in it too. Not sure why I do that, but it's what my grandma taught me when I was all of three feet tall, so I'll stick with it. That, and green tea and honey is another favorite of mine.

Talked to girlfriend in Bangkok several weeks ago and they have all had some sort of flu. The youngest daughter went to schooland came home sick then the little boy and then granddaughter after grand daughter the adults all got sick. Everyone has recovered now and all feel fime.
Reading something a while back about flu and fever the recommendation was not to fight the fever to agressively because the high temp. will not allow the flu virus into the cells. The article was in the Tennant Alternative Medicine Newsletter.
Good luck to you all who have contacted H1N1 a very nasty bug in deed.

I had it few months ago. It is just quite basic Influenza virus. Even quick test cannot separate h1n1 from Influenza-A virus. If you want to determine which one you have, you need to take more deeper pathology tests that will take about 24hrs to complete.
Both virus symptoms are the same, death ratios are -+0.1% same on both of them. Actually every year thousands of peoples will die on normal annual influenzas, media just not tell this. True it is really sad if someone close to you will end up on statistics but this is life.
I had 3 days high fever (around +38.7), headache, joints hurt. No coffin not running nose.
The actual risk on this virus is that it can paralyze companies, governments etc if it get really bad. And this is due it's speed on spreading.
I met one my friend on Wed morning around 10am, he was sneezing often and having flu symptoms. around 1pm i started to feel bad and knew that I have a fever. Thursday at home having hot/cold moments and sweating a bit. Fri my GF said that now we go hospital and we went to hospital close to Sala Daeng.
First nose scoop test after one hour wait did show positive for Influenza-A / H1N1 so they took another scoop test (from nose), gave some medicine like painkillers, for running nose and allergic symptoms, sent me home and said to come back on monday to listen verdict of longer test.
Saturday still had small fever, sunday only headache..
Monday I went back to hospital, no any symptoms except small headache.. Doc looked my papers and mumbled something in latin or what ever language
"Hmmmm jadajada Yes sir, your H1N1 test was positive, just eat rest of the medicines I gave on friday and rest of the symptoms should go away in 3-4 day"...
She was right, after Wed I didn't feel anything anymore, not even headache.
H1N1 is not more or less dangerous than normal flu. True it can be dangerous for really young and really old people especially if not treated, but anyways every flu if you do not treat it well or let your body to rest properly.
Good food, relax, some vitamines, love and good care will take over it
Ps. my GF never had any problems....
Pss. and do not go for those vaccines, they are even more worse to your body than the actual sickens... They are full of all kinda heavy metals and other chemicals..

I think this is the norm. Meaning I wonder how many treated as having swine actually just have a more basic flu.
