Does anyone know which works better? I read a few articles that said that hand sanitizer only works if you wash your hands every hour or so. Made for doctors and hospital workers who already wash their hands frequently. I don't know if I should keep using hand sanitizer frequently or not

Medial staff are taught to use the hand sanitizer after touching a patient and before seeing the next patient if they have no opportunity or time to wash their hands with soap.

And you won't see too many "good" doctors using "hand sanitizer between patients (as an alternative to proper washing)

It cannot and does not (nor is it intended) to replace proper soap and water.

Every doctors surgery "that is worth being called a surgery" should have a hand basin with running water available "with soap of course"

The hand sanitizer is used after being out and about and having shaken a few hands etc.

As far as time permitting there is always sufficient time as one patient is leaving the surgery and the next one being ushered in.

The California state health department mandated, and in nursing school we were taught the following:  When administering medications (passing pills) hand sanitizer after each patient and wash hands every 5th.  If you come into contact with a patient or are performing any procedure always wash hands with anti-bacterial soap.

Hand sanitizer is no substitute for proper hand washing 30 seconds minimum.

And for non-medical use:
For soap read: real soap, like in a bar of soap, unscented, no perfume & all.
Do remember, when soap must clean, it should not have a flowery smell, it should smell like.....soap.
Wash your hands once an hour with water and soap, minimum.
I use Dettol Original soap, readily available in most shops.

Ever heard of Dettol fluid?
The brown stuff, smelling not very pleasantly?
Take a small plastic or glass bottle, pour in some Dettol, fill up with water till the solution is milky white.
Carry the bottle with you, wash your hands with that solution from time to time.
Cleans very well, smells not very well, but most certainly kills the flu virus on your hands, and with it most other bacteria.
Works better as hand cleaner (sanetizer), and very much cheaper.

Hi Grace, none of them work as you may think they do; they actually do more harm than good. First of all, these hand sanitizers are anti bacterial, you and most people are trying to protect from virus', not the same thing. Most hand sanitizers contain alcohol, which is not good for the skin or any cells (actually destroy on contact); also, usually contain Triclosan and/or Glycerin, both of which are toxic, do a search for either of those chemicals online. I believe that 101healthsteps website has articles on both those dangerous chemicals. As an alternative to these toxic chemical hand cleaners, either use rose water, which has been used for centuries or simply create your own using any variety of essential oils and mix it with virgin coconut oil in a small spray bottle and carry it around with you. Most essential oils, as well as coconut oil, are both anti bacterial and anti viral, furthermore, healthy for your skin unlike these mainstream hand sanitizers, which believe it or not, adds more chemicals to your liver and blood stream, further weakening your immune system. Feel free to message me privately for the links. I hope this helps. Best of luck.
