@ transam, google search:  dashboard camera for cars in Thailand  , for some ideas.

There is actually No brand (some kind of chinese thing). Bought it in one of the Alarm and Monitor Stores in the 3rth floor. There are differet models. I'll upload some pictures of the item tomorrow.

Hello Stingray!

Any pictures yet?

I wana get one for my car... although I live in Bangkok, I can look for something similar.

Shot a picture of the camera today (fitted on my windscreen) Camera don't have any name, trowed the box away already, but i thing there aren't so many on the marked yet. The camera actually lokks cheap, but the quality of the vdea is good enought. It runs only with a 2 Megabite chip (4MB is not suported). But 2MB is enought as the camera will overwrite automaticly, when the memory is full.  I'll go and get another one (just for spare), with a new box. I will give more information.

I don't know in other parts of Thailand, but in Pattaya for sure, when ever a farang with a car get involved with a motorcycle in accident, there is only onerule: The Farang is wrong and is respansabile and have to pay all. Even if the driver of the morotcycle has no license, tax or registrationplate. Doesn't matter even if he comes the wrong way or passes the redlight, because maybe you can't aprove thet you had a green traffiglight. Beleve me, 5 motorcycle taxis will say that you past driving on the retlight, not him, they will lie and help the Local on the motorcycle. I talk here about espriences, not about law. It is like this, therefore NEVER drive any car without a correct insurance. I recomment to all car owner to buy a recording camera for your car. Easy can get in Tuk Com. This camera is very small, cost about 2'800 Baht, can fit like a GPS, on the windscreen of your car, has a 2 megabite chip inside, similar like a mobilephone. Poweplug for cigarette lighter. The recording chip overwrites automaticly when the memory is full. So you never need to delete the files as in older camera models. This investment safes you a lot of troubles when it comes to an accident. For example you have evidence when someone passes the red traffiglights or if somebody cut you in the front of your car. Of course, in case of a accident, never hand out the recordingchip to the police, only to your the insurance guy.

I have been driving a car here in Thailand for the last few years.
I have luckily not had an accident but several of my friends have. I must say that I can not fault the BIB on any of those occations and I would not be surprised if they did stick it to some of my friends... Drunk and other lane... Nope, they try to have as little work as possible to do...

If the people can fix it among themselves they will not take any interest (just pay the coffee that they left)...

Thai BIB here in the south is nice.

One friend killed a Thai guy on a bike. The police said that if she wanted to help the family, 5000B was more than enough.

Another guy I know, killed a Burmese guy, insurance sorted that out, BIB friendly and helpful.

Another friend got hit in Phuket, driving a BMW... The Thai boy on the motorcycle had no license, my friend did... Nothing.  BIB friendly...

I have been pulled over but the BIB is always friendly...

Just a few examples...
Anyone else have the same experience from down here in the south???

I have been driving some 300,000 km in 50 provinces in Thailand, have had a few smaller skirmishes but none that has been my fault. I have never experienced being unfairly treated, not one single time in 17 years. But then I always keep my temper and smile...

Been hit in the car twice by motor bikes and once by a car. Police WITNESSED two of the incidents. Kicked the crap out of two drunk guys who hit me while trying to escape from the police. Took the driving license of the guy in the car who hit me until he paid for the damage to my car.

Never a bad thing to say about the traffic cops behaviour. Yes, the girl who hit my Yaris on her brand new Honda Wave pleaded poverty, and i was thinking, "but thats a brand new bike!!!" but it was easier for all to save face if I just bit my tongue and let it go.

I think a lot of it comes down to how you manage the situation. Not all cops are the same, but they are all human.

Ummm... considering we're in "Thai" land, something doesn't sound right here; but not so surprising either, for some reason..   :)

Just to clearify...

The Burmese guy hit his car (my friend in the semiwrong lane/ some wheels on the wrong side..) evasive manouver for him due to a rather large truck...

Accident, sad that the guy died but these things happen... Feel sorry for his GF...

I was not there so I have only heard second hand stories but in the end, the outcome is the same. My friend was shaken for a long time, now he is better, but drives slower...

I'm from Phuket and have had (along with my friends) bad experiences.

One friend was determined at fault by local police after his car was hit from the rear by an underaged, unlicensed motorcylist trying to pass him in a no pass zone. Another friend extorted by the police for 30,000 Baht for hitting an unlit motorcycle with 3 very drunk locals at night.

I have other friends that have been pulled over an accused (and assessed fines) for fictictious charges, etc. These incidents took place in various areas of Phuket.

I supposed it just depends on where you live, your "luck", etc. I am fearful of problems every time I drive on the roads here.

I was driving in Chiang Mai and I wanted to make a turn, but realized I was int he wrong lane, so I put on my blinker to get to the next lane to make the turn. I was slow and then I had a guy fly up on his motorcycle and the gear shift hit in my rim. He went flying. Only a small cut on his foot and a bent shifter and broken mirror, no paint damage.

I offered to have my mechanic friend to fix it all right there (he worked 1km away) replace it all with Honda parts and 1500Baht on top of that. But noooo he was a lawyer who usually drove a fortuner etc etc.

So he tried to work his magic with the cops, it didn't work. I was out 400B and he had to deal with my insurance who refused to repair the bike at a Honda dealer.

The cops were extremely friendly and helpful, the only hassle was waiting for my insurance to send someone.  The lawyer stormed off 2hrs later, probably cursing the fact that he could have had a fixed bike and 1500B in his pocket and be on his way an hour and a half earlier.

Same experience as many others, have a good 1st class insurance. In Klong Tan, young Somchai was belting down the road at dusk , black shirt , no lights, I looked , started to open my door, saw him coming and stopped , he locked the scooter up, put it down the road into another bike with two on board who were overtaking stopped cars opposite me, the second bike hit another car, and so on.

A crowd gathered , some muttering about the Farang, one guy in the crowd claimed he was injured by some flying plastic, lots of laughing all around at that, I made sure Somchai was ok, then stepped back out of it and called the insurance. Polite to the cop all the time, it cost Baht 1,200 for Somchai including an ambulance with sirens wailing, Baht 1,000 to the station social club and a Baht 500 tip to the insurance guy who was with me until the wee small hours , about 6 hours. Anyway ,that was it, the Police were quite professional, asked both sides of the story , decided I had contributed by frightening Somchai (which i did when i cracked the door open) and so i should cover his injury and costs. Insurance picked up the rest.

there are some honest bib out there

Amen to that! Years ago a motorcycle skidded into my car and the driver tried to rip me off. Ended up at Soi 9 and long story short, in the end the Captain on duty booted the guy out of the cop shop, telling him not to try to rip off an innocent farang in his police station ever again.

a couple of weeks ago a Thai lady ( I use this term loosely) hit my car with her motorcycle. I got out, took the key off her motorcycle and put it in my pocket. Asked for 5,000 Baht cash as she didn't have any insurance. Long lamenting, poor Thai lady yadayada, my response was if you are not insured and cause an accident you have to pay out of your own pocket. 20 minutes later 5,000 Baht appeared out of her wallet (no walk to the ATM required) and the key was returned. Needless to say that I took pictures of her and all her friends/brothers/pimps she called for help.

So you basically stole her motorbike. Not a very clever thing to do really as you could find yourself in trouble as well. Would you do the same to a big 20 year old guy?

done this before :) In that case it was a drunk car driver who rear ended me and had some 20 people within minutes surrounding me. I do not judge books by its cover, but none of them looked like they earned money in a legal way. I took pictures of them while they tried to intimidate me.

I also did not steal the motorbike but impounded it until she compensated for the damage she caused. Also her "brother" she asked for help was in his late 20s and rather big (read: muscular) for a Thai. A policeman also showed up and I actually handed over the key to him. He held the key until payment was done. Unfortunately he did not book the lady for driving without license and insurance also I asked him to do so.

I learned this lesson years ago when in a similar incident the driver made a runner and noticed just a bit later that policemen take the key from the motorcycle when they stop someone.

l think he got paid for his damage and not interested whether she was driving a Ferrari or a push bike, and what's the age of the rider got to do with anything if your in the right. Do you think we all fear people younger than ourselves, perhaps you do. Do you have a sign on the back of your motor "over 50's collisions only".
For all the sensible replies l'v had, l thank you.

If you feel firmly in the right, smile a lot, politely decline/insist, and wait for your insurance guy. Never get short or angry, or you options will vanish quickly.

Exactly what happened to me.

A Thai guy crashed into the side of my car with his jeep, he got out, apologised and said it was his fault.

My insurance and police come and it turns out it's not his jeep it's his bosses who rents it out to tourists. It's not insured and suddenly the driver denies all responsibility.

At the cop shop my insurance guy tells me the police say it's my fault. NO WAY I reply, again he comes back and gets the same answer from me.

Finally he comes back and says "You lucky, police say it's the other guys fault." Not lucky at all I tell him, it WAS the other guys fault.

absolutely correct! The insurance guy is acting as a lawyer as he represents your interest. If you loose the case his company has to pay and I reckon they are on some sort of a commission scheme for avoided claims.

If you take your own pictures of the accident scene and the people involved it helps a lot as they cannot deny later not having been there.

When turning left on Sukhumvit with the indecator on 2 girls on a m/cycle tried to undertake me and damadged themselves and my car ,as i was alone they phoned their mother who spoke english and demanded money ,which i refused and told her that my insuranceman was on his way ,one of the girls brother turned up at the same time as my wife ,she told him what had happened (it was obvious)
anyway long story short the insurance guy hadnt turned up after 1 hour so i gave the girls 1000 baht to get their scrapes and torn t shirts done (i felt sorry for them ) and went to my insurance company who fixed my car and i lost my no claims . but the moral of the story is if you have good insurance you have nothing to worry about ,except the bloody insurance guy not turning up in over an hour.,
