Does anyone know if you can buy plants of the bay leaf or laural tree in Bangkok. I would love to have one. From Wikipedia it is Laurus nobilis, Lauraceae if that helps.

There is an Indonesian Variety - Syzygium polyanthum - which of course doesn't have the same taste (aroma) which would probably be much easier to grow.
Have someone to bring one or a clipping and try to grow it, never seen one around! #3

It looks like a cutting may be the answer but I will try for the real one first before looking for the Indonesian or Indian versions. #4

I kinda doubt laurel would grow here : it's endemic to mediterranean climate, with very dry weather.
But if it does, let us know, I love the taste of it ! #5

Eric at Dolmai garden in Chiang Mai has one and has had it for 3 years and it is battling - does not like the climate too much...it's hardly grown at all. However, he does have a load of other plants used in cooking that are thriving including curry bushes, cinnamon trees (3 varieties) and a heap of others.

If so where can I find it ? I have a Bay tree (currently a small plant 18") in Pai. I brought it back from UK as a root shoot about 18 months ago. It looks ok, but growing very slowly. |
