UPDATE

Red shirts to rally at Army bases

The red shirts will organise a series of rallies designed to counter the Army's show of force and deter any attempts to stage a coup, organiser Natthawut Saikua said on Tuesday.

"If the soldiers can thump their topboots in a show of force, then the people too can thump their feet to protect democracy," Natthawut said.

The red shirts are expected today to rally at the Defence Ministry. They will on Thursday stage mini-rallies  at key Army bases around the country.

The red shirts really are like a bunch of headless chickens at the moment. ' Let's go to the airport, no that's a bad idea, let's go to Sirirat hospital. No, let's go to the Air Force base, no let's go to the Defence Ministry'.
Running around so long as the money keeps flowing.
Hopefully the tap will be turned off before utter public boredom sets in.

Aren't the Red Shits a de facto army and looking to stage their own version of a coup?

Also, as a farang, I'd rather see amilitary government than the return of a Toxin bent on revenge, and taking some of it out on the citizens of countries that have snubbed him.

Finally, why don't the Reds realise that there has never been a megalomaniac leader in history who has no brought his country to its knees. Aah! Education. They don't even know about Pol Pot next door. Let's keep em ignorant, eh?

That is a valid point. The military government before was inefficient, but in compare to murder 3000 people like Thaksin did in his war against drugs or what might happen if he can come back and want to have a revenge, a military government seems the far better option.

But I don't see any reason for a government. The Democrats are doing OK, beside that the coalition partner are blocking most things, but that isn't different than in other countries. While things are not moving as fast as they should, there is no real problem or big damage.

I think public boredom set in last April already and the demonstrations are all very small.

They need to something to demonstrate against which fits with the mythical ideology they have created. They cant just demo against the asset case because that just looks like doing the bidding of a rich member of the elite. Therefore they aim at everything. Obviously Siriraj hospital was a bad idea, so they started the coup rumours to target the military but that kind of didnt work when their maverick general said some really silly things and got caught up in the grenade saga thanks to his big mouth. However, right now they arent really being given the ammo the government used to give them and with the Alpine case now being mentioned al;ong with the Sarayud one they cant really push that too far. The government have become a lot more adept at handling the red shirts who have also been hurt by their violence and links to disloyal ideas. They need a rallying issue which isnt as obviously self sevring as Thaksin's money.

UPDATE

Politics chaotic as per usual but coup not warranted: Chavalit

Pheu Thai Party chairman Chavalit Yongchaiyudh on Tuesday tried to quell coup rumours by arguing the political situation, though chaotic, did not deteriorate to warrant the military intervention.

Chavalit voiced optimism that the political terbulence would pass once the high court handed down the verdict on the Bt76 billion in impounded assets of ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

"I believe normalcy would resume after the completion of the judicial review on this case," he said.

He said he was confident the red shirts would understand and accept the verdict, dismissing concern for the eruption of violence.

Yep Im sure the red shirts will just sit by and nod their heads in an understanding way if the money gets seized. Unless of course ole Chavalit is using code for well if the dosh gets seized there wont be any to pay for trouble. Then again not sure what Ole Thaksin will make of his hand picked man making such statements whatever he meant by them.

Haven't seen a mention of this in the press, but very relevant at present.Personally can't see anything happening whilst Exercise Cobra Gold is being hosted. Apart from the regional neighbors taking part, more importantly the US has around 13,500 troops in the Kingdom. Imagine the political ramifications if a coup was staged now, it would be very embarrassing for the US who incidently cut financial aid whilst the last Military Government was in charge.

The one possibility that few talk about is that after the asset case decision there is a possibiltiy for a political realignment. Of course nothing may happen but there will be a possibiltiy and players will be preparing for that too or to try and prevent it.
