Yep, pretty much the same as that. All my infrastructure spending (about 8 million) was done at 75.75 to the quid. Now it's time to chill and watch the recession amongst my orchids. I keep costs as practicably low annd sensible as possible. Got the ropiest moped in the village too, but it does have character.

In fact the house will be paid off in 5 more years. You are correct that the kids will go to a foreign university in either Australia or UK as they have 3 passports. I reckon my last day of work will be around my 50th birthday. Sabai sabai. I was actually flat broke 7 years ago. #54Posted 2010-03-21 21:31:53

To be realistic you can live on what ever you'v got. You will get the fat wallet guy's frightening you off who want to live like millionaires in LOS but take no notoce. If you have little cash then the north east is for you but if cash is no problem then take your pick. #58Posted 2010-03-21 22:54:40
Im pretty sure anybody who arrives in Bangkok realises it's possible to spend vast sums of money here. It aint big and it aint clever.
Kudos goes to those who are happy here and spend the least amount of money! In other words, have integrated somewhat with the majority of Thai people! Now if i sold my motorbike, i could buy a paramotor, but the rainy season is coming.. what a dilemma! - then again, I could die flying, but then again i could die on my bike... choices choices. I used to live on about 15 - 20,000 a month, but then the wife went behind my back and bought a new car on finance, now of course she realises that she actually has to find 7,000 extra a month, for the next 6 years. Silly bitch. She did explain to me that she couldnt sell it, - because... what would the neighbours say! Edited by whiterussian, 2010-03-21 22:55:12. #59Posted 2010-03-21 22:59:03
Well i don't have a budget, no idea how much i spend per month.
What i do know is that i spend less than i earn so as long it stays that way i do not feel the need to count. #60Posted 2010-03-21 23:10:04
I came here for a "ben Gunn style" Life changing experience. Slowly but surely I have made my life a little more comfortable but I still am spending a fraction of what I used to pay in tax on a monthly basis. I love the simplicity of life here and don't feel the need for conspicuous consumption that I used to induldge in. I've been teaching here nearly 4 years and with the odd exception that covers most of my expenditure. Sometimes I have surplus sometimes I dip into UK funds. As long as the well is not empty, everything is cushdy.
Of course I am single and not into the bar stuff so golf and graduate study are my main luxury spends. If I lived near the seedy sides I would doubtless get seduced more often and doubt the teaching monies would cover it all. Well would take a hit. But I chose to live here and still enjoy it. Horses for courses... #61#62Posted 2010-03-22 10:26:19
Well, we (wife and myself) live in Sukhumvit. Rent was 105,000/month until a year ago and now it's 125,000 a month (excluding electricity charges) I really don't calculate this too often but it seems like we spend around 250 - 300,000 a month total. You spend 5,000-6,000GBP per month in Thailand....yeah i'm sure you do.... #63Posted 2010-03-22 10:32:03

If we had more money we'd have a better house, better car but as it is we do ok (by thai standards) & live like people that do ok. Only thing I want is to start saving more but as we are just starting up here again after 5 years in UK need time to sort that out.
There is no nobility in being cheap nor extravagant. Just live within your own means & be happy with it. #65Posted 2010-03-22 10:57:44

I see your point but the OP is putting his feelers out to get an idea. If he had 5 grand a month to blow he most for sure would not be asking here. #66Posted 2010-03-22 11:11:45
We live on 30k/month in a village 40kms away from a major town.
But the house we built is not factored in, if I manage to survive for the next 17 years that will add 10K, only 7 years make it 20K but I don't need to bother about that isn't' Wife spends 20K/month on basic needs: food, clothing, electricity. I pay extras: car expenses such as insurance, petrol, "upper-class" restaurants (which we don't have but just imagine they are upper-something) 2x month or so. So we live very well on 30k. I did buy lots of extras though lately, new PC with 23inc flat panel 50k, some furniture 50K, a trip to kho Phi Phi 40k, also does not include purchase of car, so watch out for your "other expenses" #67Posted 2010-03-22 11:53:57
There has been hundreds of these threads and it always turns into a bitching contest of how much richer people ar nd how the fcuk could some poor peasant live on a mere 200,000 bht, just spend what you think is right and dont worry what the Jones's next door are doing. wow 125,000 for rent that is ridiculous Bah forget about renting a place....when the apartments I bought in Samui 125 years ago are finished I will be living like the millionaire I was born to be. Sorry,125 years ago, are you Methusalem bdw, surerly a typo? 125 thou a month rent + electr,+ water+dogfood catfood, car expenses = food /drinks about 350 .000 Thou a month, I life with all the beer i can drink and pigknockles and bratwurst from Makro and and cheese from first food for about 50.000 B. The family is Thai, they need another 10.000.thou,+ 20 Thou living allowance for the missus that leaves me some money for saving for my hometicket sometimes #68Posted 2010-03-22 12:14:34
I am literally a prince of a country that shall remain nameless. I spend a few million every month on a personal fellatio assistant and I have my own traveling masseuse. I have you all beat.

You spend 5,000-6,000GBP per month in Thailand....yeah i'm sure you do.... There are two broad categories of expats in Thailand that people seem to be referring to here i would say- 1) the teachers/IT/website manager types on anything from 10-100,000 baht per month and 2) expat packages types, those sent here by their companies on anything from 250,000- 800,000 + baht per month. For the expat package types, spending 100,000 baht + per month on accommodation is the norm. I have lived as both expat types in thailand -my level happiness and overall enjoyment of life was the same for both, but life is certainly more comfortable with the expat package. #70Posted 2010-03-22 18:29:33
i have my own place in khon kaen so whilst im there with my wife and baby daughter i need only 500 per day , 100 fuel for motorbike / 200 for food ,meat etc from market and shops / 200 for beer leo, add to that maybe another 1 or 200 baht for extras.

Location: just outside a village near Khon Kaen. We bought land, car and built our house for cash, outright, so we have no rent or debt payments at all. We get along very nicely on about 20,000 baht each month, max. As time goes on we produce more and more of our own food and we'd like to go solar for electricity when we possible.
It's the quality of an interesting active way of life I appreciate rather than the cheapness. #72Posted 2010-03-22 18:54:12
