Red Shirts plan intensified protest as international parliamentary meeting convenes in Bangkok

BANGKOK (TNA) – A leader of the Thailand's Red Shirt protesters -- the anti-government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) -- said the protest will be larger Saturday, claiming three to five times the number of demonstrators as were in last week’s caravans.

Red Shirt leader Nuttawut Saikua said the number of protesters will increase about three to five times from last weekend’s motorcade that snaked through roads in Bangkok and Thonburi.

The Red Shirts will contact local and foreign media as well as the Guinness Book of World Records to see if it could set a record number of protesters joining campaigns to oust the prime minister.

About 65,000 Red Shirts travelled in a convoy of vehicles and motorcycles through the capital's key streets Saturday to raise support from Bangkok residents and pressure the government to dissolve Parliament.

Meanwhile, Jatuporn Prompan, another top leader and an opposition Puea Thai Party member of parliament said is party's MPs did not attend Parliament
on Wednesday as the barbed wire rings and concrete cordons placed by soldiers around the Parliament was considered disrespect honour of Members of Parliament, signifying that MPs must follow orders of the Army.

How will the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly begin, as soldiers occupied several areas, Mr Jatuporn asked, stating that the Red Shirt leaders would not move its activists to Parliament on Thursday.

The 122th Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) Assembly to be attended by 153 member countries will begin Saturday and will run to next Thursday (April 1) at the Sofitel Centara Grand Bangkok and Convention Center in the downtown Rajprasong area.

If the police set up checkpoints to block protesters, the Red Shirts will break them, threatened Mr Jutuporn.

Meanwhile, Pol Maj-Gen Piya Uthayo, spokesman of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said about 22 companies of police will remain assigned around Parliament until its sessions end this week.

He expressed concern about the mass protest on Saturday when the international parliamentary assembly begins.

About 150 police officers will be deployed at the meeting’s venue and security officers will also be dispatched to 18 hotels where participants will stay, said the spokesman. (TNA)

Bottom line:

We'll contact Guinness Book of World Records in order to entice more protesters. It's nothing but a gimmick like everything else before this.

When will the folks wake up, this is not about democracy.

Well i guess a world record was bound to be broken sooner or later..

World record for Land with the most diverse and largest number of neverending hubs...

World record for Land with the most continuous crackdowns ect ect

On this occasion maybe a world record for the most nuttiest display of behaviour shown from a former prime minister is more fitting :)

The rich don't give a shi....t is exactly what it is all about. The longer I stay in Thailand the more i realize this fact. It starts in the schools at a very early age where the kids are brainwashed into worshiping the elite. The message is then carried on through propoganda which can be seen everwhere in Bangkok and elsewhere in Thailand. The poor are taught to be grateful for what they have while Thailand remains one of the biggest 'haves' versus 'have not' societies in the world. I know a lot of the Bangkok rich. They don't care about poor people. Look at the support base of the Yellow shirts , its the 'haves' the ones that want to deprive the poor of even having a vote, the ones Abhisit relies on for support. Before anyone says it,it is a great pity that a 'have' like  Thaksin supported the 'have nots" as it will take them a long time to get over him, but when they do they will be the major force in Thai politics.

good points indeed. you're right, I was disturbed how at a tender young age they are aware of class. I known western kids eventually want to be cool to and fit in, but not like here. seen rich bangkok kids often call others: khon baan nork. there is a lot of division of class here, and a long way toward realization of democracy and equality or any of those concepts. Such is life I suppose in a developing country.

The PAD yellows are a small minority. Yes that faction vote for Abhisit but only a small portion of his total support. This is the same tired old false propaganda, that if you are anti-Thaksin, you are pro yellow and against poor people. The Thai democrats have not once suggested they support the PAD/yellow idea of a mostly appointed parliament. I could use the same argument, that the Thai communists mostly vote with Thaksin, to argue that the reds are a communist movement.

The only way I think this can be helped is if the yellow rad red people realize that an do not allow themselves being played by these spoiled rich people. If they just attend to their life and may be they become richer and independent and then everything will ba taking care of itself.

Democracy is impossible if you do not have middle class. The Middle class is the back bone of the democracy

One of the reason Thaksin did not use to build the support from people from south was because the people from south tend to be more educated and have more of their own business, the sign of middle class

They should try to set a record of blood removed from their bodies.  I would say if each participant can get 4 liters out it would be kind of fun.  Then they could all take a nap.

On the contrary, PM-Abhisit doesn't receive the support of a single PAD/NPP PM, because there are none.  :D

But with BS like this being fed 24/7 to the Red-Shirts, the chances of a fair election are pretty-much zero, in the short-term at least. So much for 'true democracy'. :)

Based on those numbers they will have 3x the number they had during their "million man" protest.  Somehow I doubt this.
