Thai Lawyer & Russian Collude in Extortion Attempt

PATTAYA: -- Crime suppression police arrested a Thai lawyer and Russian national on  Friday after the pair colluded in an attempt to extort money from an  innocent Thai woman. The two men had attempted to recover the costs for  the purchase of a stolen vehicle using illegitimate means.

Pattaya, the 30th  of July 2010 [PDN]: At approximately 7:00pm on Friday, Lieutenant  Colonel Khuanpirat Monojarensap (Crime Suppression Division Special  Suppression Head) and a team of officers instigated a sting operation at  a legal practitioner's office on Thepprasit Road, Pattaya.

The raid was initiated following a report filed by Miss Monsuang  Srisopha from Phuket, alleging that the business owner Mr. Sathien  Khamnuan and his client Mr. Sergey Fesdorenko, a Russian national, were  attempting to extort Bt900,000 from her.

Somtampet, I don't understand your comment.

The Crime Suppression Unit busted a Thai, a Russian, and further investigates the "possible involvement of several Pattaya Police officers". To me this is good news for a change, if this would be regular news I'd say: "delighted, applauding, moving to Thailand quickly".

I think Somtampet is reflecting the fact that it is Thai police investigating Thai police.  Franly the pnly surprise to me is that the woman who reported the incident wasn't arrested by way of "teachig her a lesson"..  Either way i feel sure the Thai system will ensure she is the one who loses out and the police all do nicely.

How can you think that you can sell a stolen car that you bought back to the rightful owner. This must be illegal even in Russia.

It's easy to understand the Russians anger once he found out he had been sold a stolen car, and seeing a Thai lawyer was a rational thing for him to do, but any competent lawyer would have told him he's going to be the one to stand the loss. No competent lawyer would have gotten involved in anything like this.  It's the most gross malpractice I've ever seen.   Whoever above that said this was his lawyer; you need a new and better one.  The laws in that regard are no different at home.  The person who sold him the car had nothing to sell.
I'm a retired American lawyer, and I consulted a lawyer in Thailand once over a minor non-criminal problem.  I walked out of his office amazed at his lack of professionalism.  The police seemed to understand the law and my situation better than the lawyer did.
