Its all about spin, propagnda, news cycles, marketing, PR etc and people depending on their own bias will believe what they want to believe. Try asking a few or even a lot of Thai people what they think of the pic. Interestingly one opinion is well prevalent, which may be down to truth or down to someone winning the propaganda game on this one.
Most Thai people have no idea who Nelson Mandela is.
Thaksin donated a sum to the Nelson Mandela foundation.
I had to laugh when one of Thaksin's close friends said yesterday he was suffering from prostrate gland problems but it wasn't cancer.
Come clean Thaksin, for once in your life, before it's too late.

It was surprising to read his former classmate and long-time confidant Air Chief Marshall Sumet Phomanee make those revelations in light of all the speculating going on currently in that regard.

Thaksin invests in Miranda Minerals
Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE)-listed Miranda Minerals has secured an investment of R98.2 million ( 426,073,815 Baht ) from a Dubai investment firm chaired by Thaksin Shinawatra, a former prime minister of Thailand. In a statement, the company said the investment was part of a two-stage capital-raising programme that would result in Thaksin's investment firm, Global PS Telecom Investment Company, holding 34.99 percent of Miranda Minerals.
"The capital raised will enable Miranda Minerals to accelerate development of a range of mineral assets while demand for coal and other minerals remains firm in key markets on the back of gradual economic recovery." The projects included the separate listing of Miranda Coal as the operation began to produce and sell export grade coal on the international market. Thaksin said Global PS had identified Miranda Minerals as its preferred investment vehicle through which to establish meaningful exposure to exploration and near-production mining assets in South and Southern Africa.

This doesn't address the issue.There are lots of reasons that people here don't like Thaksin (and the one you have chosen remains uninvestigated by the Thai army)
But the original point holds good.Which grouping in Thailand would a man like Mandela be drawn to?It's no good saying he wouldn't be drawn to any because this is a hypothetical discussion.

Thaksin on 'courtesy call' to Mandela
No business was discussed with the fugitive Thai politician, says foundation
The Nelson Mandela Foundation has distanced itself from Mandela's meeting last month with controversial former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, a fugitive from justice, saying that the encounter was "a private courtesy call". Sello Hatang, the spokesperson for the foundation, said the foundation had not facilitated the meeting and it could not provide details of who had facilitated it. He explained that there was a strict protocol established by the foundation for courtesy calls with Mandela.
"It was not organised by trustees or any staff member of the Nelson Mandela Foundation, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund or any of the Mandela organisations," he said. "To our knowledge, no business was discussed during the visit and the meeting lasted no more than 10 minutes."
Thaksin's meeting with Mandela came to light when the former premier's lawyer, Noppadon Pattama, held a press conference to allay fears about Thaksin's reportedly bad health by brandishing a photograph of Thaksin with Mandela. He said Thaksin had stayed out of the spotlight to avoid "stirring up controversy and facilitate reconciliation" in Thailand. His meeting with Mandela was to learn about reconciliation from the great man.
