Great, I'm just about to start looking for a GPS. Is this price and model widely available? And includes Thai maps in English?
My needs are simple. A GPS with Thai maps in English, that will show me exactly where I am when I'm out on my bike. No bells and whistles needed. #3Posted 2011-10-18 21:00:59
Can one order this over the phone with a credit card?
How much is shipping to a town in Thailand? How long will it take? Has anyone had experience ordering a GPS over the phone from a Thai retailer? #5Posted 2012-01-14 09:41:09
I just bought one of these. Unfortunately, it only comes with a 'cigarette lighter' charger so I'll have to buy an adaptor to charge it from the mains or a USB port.
In addition there is no USB cable included so if you need to connect to your computer you will need to purchase another cable, I guess. Also, there is no memory card supplied so if you want to store maps on a memory card, I guess you will have to buy one of these. Finally, according to the shop, it can only do street names in one language at a time. So if you want to switch from English language street names, e.g. Phaya Thai Road to Thai street names e.g. ถนนพญาไท, you need to completely reload the map. It cannot be done at the flick of a switch. So, you are a bit limited as to what you get for 3,900 Baht and some extra expenditure may be necessary. #6Posted 2012-01-14 16:03:58
I bought a power cable (mains) for 140 Baht and a data cable for 90 Baht from the ever helpful Amorn Electrics. It took a while to find the right type. I also went into Se-Ed as they sell Garmin products and the woman there reckons memory cards are not required as the data cable will suffice.
I need to do some experimenting. It's on the long first charge at present. #7Posted 2012-01-16 11:29:46
I bought a Garmin Nüvi 1490T in Holland with a fully up-to-date European map.
Acquiring a map for in Thailand wouldn't be a problem..........I thought. There are plenty of countries from where you can either buy memory-cards or downloads online. Not in Thailand!!!!!! You actually have to contact the maindealers or ESRI direct. Absolutely no downloads available. Downloading or obtaining memory-card for S.E. Asian Maps V12.0 is USD 99.99 or Euro 119. (resp. THB 3,099 or THB 4,879). Buying the same map from ESRI will cost you THB 6,200 !!!??? Answer from ESRI.........we have to pay import tax Misterrrrrrrr. Sure up my *ss. So, I went to the nearest Garmin dealer in Pattaya.........Power Buy along Pattaya Klaang. I asked for a map and of course.............."Mai mee Misterrrrrrrr!" You are a Garmin dealer yes? ............. "Yes misterrrrrr! But no have maps! Go TukCom is better" Great.........may 'favorite' shopping mall! Anyway, I found a nice little shop, run by a perfect English speaking couple. I asked for a Thai map (because I don't need Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei and Singapore) and in 10 minutes the Thai map V12 was installed on my Garmin. With less features than the European map, but more than sufficient. Far better than my Nokia N86 8MP GPS. The shop in TukCom? On the 2nd floor. After taking the escalator to the 2nd floor, take a U-turn to the right, walk to the far end and you'll find them in the left corner (South Pattaya Road-side). #8Posted 2012-02-06 01:54:45

There are tools for combining maps (eg Eng and Thai) into a single map. Also Garmin supports multiple map filenames (the names vary slightly from model range to model range), so its just a case of renaming one of the files to the alternate names and then enabling the map in the unit; the unit will then 'overlay' the English and Thai maps/names. I'd say you had some communication problems. The ESRI map and the Garmin SEA maps are two different things. In my opinion, the ESRI map is the better of the two as far as detail. That map can be downloaded from Eagle GPS for 2,000 baht. The inferior Garmin SEA map indeed does cost 7,700 baht. There are other places to buy the ESRI map but Eagle GPS has an English speaking manager and the support is great. Link; http://www.eaglegps....hp/lang-en/maps #11Posted 2012-03-01 14:44:26
Regarding the map:
Garmin Thailand also released the Thai map on SDmicro card (TSM v.12 at the moment). Price: 2.000 THB. Please, check the link provided by Gary A (above). #12Posted 2012-04-04 18:41:23

I have a Nuvi 1200 from Italy that I am looking to put Thai map V12 on.... Thanks. |
