The construction at Chiangrai Hills Stadium is finished. It opens on 1st October at 9am, with the Chatiphan Cup.
Everyone welcome. Miti Tiyapairat, chairman of Chiangrai United will preside the small ceremony.
The stadium is certainly very (very) nice !

Next event at Chiangrai Hills Stadium, the "30yrs Rotary Maechan Cup".
It starts on October 22nd at 9am.
The games will be played only Saturdays and Sundays.
The last day is November 11th.
It is free to attend, of course...

The new Chiangrai Hills Stadium

a great venue for all kinds of events


Among the guests at the opening of the Chatiphan Cup Tournament we noticed some
prominent Brasilian football celebrities. Among them Eddie Pereira, former striker
of St.Gallen Switserland, now Chiangrai United, Silvio Cesar, assistent-coach of
Chiangrai United, Leonos dos Santos, coach of the succesfull Thai national team U16
that under his guidance qualified itself recently for participation in next years Asian
championship, here together with our local khun Budsawongkod Ooyuenyong, ardent supporter
of CRUTD, who many of us will recognize as their barber (opposite Thai Airways office).

The winning team was Immanuel Fc, an Akha team from Mae Suai district of which
most members work and/or study in Chiang Rai town. Out of thirty teams they did best.

One of the amazing aspects of the Chiangrai Hills Stadium is its gigantic, 5 by 8 meter,
screen that even by full daylight showns an incredible clear and sharp picture.
This screen will without doubt contribute greatly to the multi functionality of
the stadium.

The tournament was well attended by the many supporters of the teams and other football
enthousiasts. The small restaurants, bars and shops did well. Though the Chatiphan Cup
maybe should be seen as a pilot project, many people voiced their hope and expectation
that it might evolve into a yearly event.

Entrance is free... as usual.

It was super indeed! The Channel 3 actors and singers actually had a good team.
It was of course not really comparable to a Thai Premier League game but it was
fun to look at.
And yes, if you would ask yourself when a Hoegaarden tasts best, there is only
one answer possible:

"Always!"

Thinking about 11 November, the eleventh of the eleventh, fools day, many among us will
spontaneously get associations with the day that the election takes place of new carnival
princes that will be prince the year after.

Personally I always think about my uncle, Prince Harry I, who was elected the eleventh
November of 1947 to be the first prince carnival ever of the town Eindhoven in the Netherlands,
at that time the craddle for a fast growing Philips lightbulb imperium.
Of him I inherited my love of the spiritual and the spirits.

So I proudly present the only person in my family that reached a modest level of nobility:

In Maechan however, the first eleventh of the eleventh in its short existence gave another picture.
It was the day of the finals of the Rotary Cup and at the same time the centrepoint for the outdoor
and public part of the celebration of thirty years Rotary in Maechan.

It was the first time that the multi-purpose stadium was used for an event like this and the organizers
of it processed all elements in it that could refer to their perception of being a concerned pillar of
the traditional establishment of this part of the Kingdom of Thailand. A lot of flags, uniforms, parades
and related songs illustrated their nobel patriotism and thus their willingness to unselfishly serve King
and Country.

We congratulate the Rotary Club of Maechan and wish them many fruitfull years with good work ahead.
A lot of work has to be done and a group of concerned civilians can play an important role in this.

By chance I'm now sitting in the village adjoining the stadium, it's a shame it's a bit too far from my place for regular footie visits - are the matches played here now? Are there farang members of the Rotary club or is it Thai only?

Now I've had a chance to read the thread in full, wow, what can I say, a modern day fairy-tale of pragmatic philanthropy, and the stadium does look great :-)
In the 80s in Eindhoven I think I saw a descendant of that gentleman in the photo, though by that time the dresscode had morphed into the black post-punk bondage look topped off with a real-life mohican coxcomb.

At this time the stadium is used by Chiangrai United for coach licence training.
The next cup (Christmas Cup) starts on December 3rd and will end on Dec 25th with a special day for the local kids (cartoon movie on the big LED screen and other activities).
For those who do not know... the entrance of Chiangrai Hills Stadium is free.

During the coming weekend (24 and 25 Dec) the second round of the New Years Cup
will take place at the stadium, from approximately 9.30 morning untill 4 afternoon).
If you happen to be in Mae Chan, you might be willing to make a pit-stop there for
a meal or a refreshing drink. It's a nice atmosphere and a beautiful location.

All the sportshops, foodstalls, coffee shops and supporter bars are run by hill-tribe
people and all proceeds go to them. The seven-a-side tournament, in which twelve
teams participate, is for young players, not older than eightteen. The teams come
from schools and villages of which some high in the mountains.
Your visit will be appreciated! Welcome!

Coming from Chiang Rai, passing Mae Chan on the superhighway, start
moving to the right lane at Tesco Lotus. Two hundred meters further
namely, at the traffic-light, you will have to turn right.
From the 'super' to the stadium is about two kilometers.
You can't miss it.
Coming from the north: Turn left opposite the post office of Mae Chan
in front of the TOT building with the big satelite disc.

Of course it has to be seen as a tryout, but the first time an away game of Chiangrai United
was shown live on the big LED screen (5x8 meter) already more than hundred football fans
showed up, even more than usually go to the fan clubhouse at Den Ha.

It was an initiative of the Orange Power fanclub of Chiangrai United and it was supported
by the (hilltribe) manager group of the Chiangrai Hills Stadium. It was a fundraising event and
also as such you could call it succesfull: About 12.000 Baht found their way into the coffers
of the supporters, to be used for instance to bring down the costs of two bus trips to away
games to a level that would be affordable for the average local fan.

Most of the 100 Baht tickets (to be exchanged for two cans of Leo) were bought in Chiang
Rai town. At least thirty fans, including the Chiang Rai Mini's, couragously defying the
cold on their monkey bikes, travelled from Chiang Rai to Mae Chan for the event.

For the local Mae Chan section of the Orange legion, where 'Acharn Damm' is in charge, it
was a nice opportunity to host their fellow supporters from Chiang Rai. The atmosphere on
the stand during the game was as enthousiastic as it was afterwards in the supporters bar
of the stadium.

The winners of the Chiangrai Hills Stadium 2012 New Year Cup were the players of the team
of the Suksa Song Kroh boarding school in Mae Chan. They  could take home a beautiful cup
and a first prize of not less than 10.000 Baht. Yes, they are happy and they deserve to be!
Most of the students of Suksa Song Kroh come from villages high upp in the mountains and live
therefore at school. Football is a big thing for them and this prize is not only a great reward for
their efforts, but I am sure it will also encourage them for the future. SSK susu!

The party afterwards was spectacular, but that's another chapter

PS: The Suksa Song Kroh boarding school offers education to children of nine different ethnic
minorities. About twenty percent of the more than thousand students are local Thai children.
The school population includes orphans, hiv-positive and disabled children, abused children,
children from extremely poor homes and children at risc concerning drugs and prostitution.
The Chao Phya Abhai Raja Foundation has facilitated many activities of this school, among
which sports and music. The young gentlemen that now manage the Chiangrai Hills Stadium
and the Weah Radio station (both initiatives of the foundation) are all former students of the
Suksa Song Kroh school.
