Just came into Chiang Rai 'cause someone in the gf's family died, to attend the funeral and I asked myself this question, which i pass on to you:

What will happen to my visa status if I go to Myanmar for the afternoon?

1.  My non-imm OA visa was issued in Toronto August 2004.
2.  Earlier I purchased a multiple re-entry stamp as well, which has since expired.
3.  I arrived at Don Muang Oct 20 2004 and received an Oct 19 2005 stamp.
4.  I went to Tacelek from Mai Sai on Dec 5 2004 and on return my visa was stamped as valid until Dec 4 2005.

So ....

If I go to Mai Sai tomorrow, get the 1000 baht single re-entry stamp, pay the Burmese US$5, come right back, what date will be stamped in my passport for my non-imm OA renewal date?  Will I loose anything by this procedure?

Thanks to all

You  must  of  had  a  Non  Imm  O-A multiple  entry  originally  did  you?

Anyway  if  i/m  reading  it  right  when  you  come  back  in  with  the  single  re-entry  permit  you/ll  be  stamped  through  to  Dec  4th  2005  as  your  original  visa  issued  in  Toronto  will  of  expired...............shame  you  didn't  nip  out  and  back  in  just  prior  to  its  expiry  as  if  it  was  a  multi  you  would  of  got  another  years  stay  stamp.

If  you  intend  to  stay  on  you/ll  also  need  to  start  the  ball  rolling  re your  coming  up  renewal.

It looks like you got the chronology of events a bit mixed up. In addition, that “permitted to stay until Dec 4 2005” looks funny.

Was the chronology perhaps like this:

1. August 2000: non-OA visa is issued.
2. Oct 20, 2004: entry into Thailand with non-OA visa. Stamp in passport: “permitted to stay until Oct 19, 2005”.
3. Purchase of multiple re-entry permit, valid until Oct 19, 2005.
4. Dec 5, 2004: departure from Thailand, and re-entry into Thailand with re-entry permit. Stamp in passport: “permitted to stay until Dec 4, 2005”.

It seems to me that upon your re-entry on Dec 5, 2004 you should have received permission to stay only until Oct 19, 2005, but let’s wait to hear it from an expert. In the meantime, please confirm if the chronology, as I see it, is correct.

Some  countries  were  issuing  O-A  multiple  entries  i.e  they  were  valid  for  a  year  but  if  you  left  and  re-entered  during  that  year  you  would  recieve  a  fresh  years  stay..............can  only  assume  thats  what  he  had.

Or  as  you  say  the  events  are in  the  wrong  order.

I see, and understand.

It would also mean, then, that he wouldn’t have needed to buy that multiple re-entry permit before leaving and re-entering on Dec 5, 2004, doesn’t it?

Let’s hope it is indeed a multiple non-OA, otherwise the poor chap would technically be on overstay.

Sorry folks, I didn't realize my cronology was confused and my question mired in goo.  So, I'll try again.

1. August 2000: non-OA visa is issued in Toronto.  I also got a multiple entry stamp.
2. Oct 20, 2004: entry into Thailand with non-OA visa. Stamp in passport: “permitted to stay until Oct 19, 2005”.
3. Dec 5, 2004: departure from Thailand, and re-entry into Thailand with re-entry permit. Stamp in passport: “permitted to stay until Dec 4, 2005”.
4. October 2005, visted Pattaya Immigration and was told that my multiple entry stamp has expired and that my visa would expire on Dec 4, 2005.

Better?  More logical mai?  Hope so, anyway ....

Here I am at Mae Sai, the Immigration Office is closed for the day, so if I go to the border, pay 1000 baht for a re-entry stamp, go to Myanmar for a cup of tea, come back, what will be stamped in my passport?

Very eagerly awaiting .... I have another day here, could return Monday to speak to Immigration but I'll go on-line here again in a couple of hours.

BTW, it is a very beautiful drive up from Chiang Rai.

You are ok to go - just get that re entry permit first - that will be dated 4 Dec 2005 and that date will (should) be what immigration stamps as your permitted to stay when you return.  Be sure to enter the re-entry permit information on your arrival card.

Don't forget to extend your stay at immigration before December 4.  You can do any time during the last 30 days.

Makes  sense  now  :o

Dec  4th  should  be  stamped  when  you  return  as  long  as  you  have  the  re-entry  permit.

Edit...............one  thing  a  little  still  confusing  when  the  visa  was  issued  you  say  you  got  a  "multiple  entry  stamp"  do  you  mean  a  multiple  re-entry  permit  or  a  Non  O-A  multiple  entry  visa  (there  is  a  difference)

If  you  originally  were  issued  a  Non  O-A  single  entry  and  additionally  applied  for  a  multiple  re-entry  permit  then  you  should  not  of  been  given  the  Dec  4th  2005  stamp.............your  time  should  of  been  up  19th  Oct  2005.

Can  only  assume  you  either  had  the  Non  O-A  multiple  entry  visa  or  someone  made  a  balls  up  when  stamping  you  back  in   on  Dec  5th.

Anyway  wouldnt  worry  too  much  about  it.

Did  you  mean  to  write   O-A  issued  August  2004?..........(you  wrote  Aug  2000)

It has to be a Non O-A with multiple entries. Consulates and/or Embassies don't issue re-entry permits.

The doctor is correct - I originally got a non-imm OA with multiple entries - and it WAS 2004 - too many typos.

I spoke to an Immigration officer at the border.  Yes, pay 1900 Baht, if I heard correctly, get a single-entry stamp and when I re-enter they will stamp Dec 4, 2005 in my passport.  If I were to not get the re-entry stamp then when I returned it would be as a 30-day tourist.  Ouch!

I could have taken a little trip in August and got a nice bonus on stay time; didn't do it though.  And I decided 1900 was too much for a look-see at Tachilek that didn't push out my stay date.

So now I'll try to get the Canadian embassy to issue me paper work for the retirement financial statement (I think they are much more tight-a$$ed than the Americans on proof, etc) but probably end up transferring the 800,001 baht in.

Thanks and cheers ...
