Maybe this isn't news, but it was to me...

GENTOO_MIRRORS="http://gentoo.in.th/"
SYNC="rsync://rsync.sg.gentoo.org/gentoo-portage"

So that's basically local repository access here in Thailand and portage rsync in Singapore, which is for all intents and purposes just as good as being in Thailand.

Another excellent reason to use Gentoo. :)

not exactly new indeed, I've been using this mirror for distfiles for some time now as I'm also using a source based distro. however, not bleeding edge enough sometimes :P

Yeah I guess I thought I was done when I set the time zone.

Then I'm wondering why my emerge's are so slow, and I don't even think to check which mirrors I"m using.  Doh.  :blink:

But then you actually use the mirrors...

Turns out they're horribly out of date.  The latest portage snapshot is at this writing three weeks old!  The various "latest" links are all broken.  And the Singapore sync server rotation is broken too... no other word to describe it.  I was willing to hang in there for a day or two thinking it was only a temporary glitch but we're coming up on two weeks of fail here.

And whatever speed increase one might have been able to achieve pulling down distfiles locally gets eaten up with the first redirect caused by the 404 because the latest version isn't there!  OMFG

So like, how do I delete this thread?

mirrors stats: http://mirrorstats.gentoo.org/

I can max my connection with the malaysian mirror.
