New Style Forum Layout

Now everyone without an avatar has one, the same generic one. On the plus side it actually looks like me.

Posts look nice (though not great for smaller screens) and main forum page is tight, but sub-fora are less clear - guess that's the idea to get people clicking around eh
Like the smiley bar and multi-quote reply button but could do with the return of the sub-fora drop-down menu. Overall, the other was easier to decipher and a big improvement over previous upgrade.
The font seems bigger which is a plus for me---but I guess there is a reason to change it all. #53Posted 2011-12-22 07:30:20
I dont care about the ad's as I do not see them with my setup
But the individual forums seem to lack contrast now? I don't remember the exact colors of the former setup but this one seems to run into itself. Can't really pick out threads easily?....too much use of blue in text colors? Other than that I can get use to anything.....but that drop down jump to forum XX that went missing was a nice feature at the bottom of any page/thread Hope that one comes back. George, I can't seem to find a way to post "private messages". Archived messages seem to be included in a "conversation" section, but I can't find a way to send new private messages to a poster. Thanks. Thanks. #55Posted 2011-12-22 07:56:22
me no likee......

Haven't had a chance to check on PC, but is not very convenient to read on my Blackberry.
The old format would automatically format for mobile devices to fit the screen, so you only needed to scroll down. The new format does not do this, so if trying to read on BB, you have to also scroll left and right as the sentences run of the screen. This makes it very inconvenient to try and read. #57Posted 2011-12-22 08:16:50
It looks old fashioned, last one was much better. What happened to the news tickertape at the top?
#58Posted 2011-12-22 08:17:43
I have just looked at this new set up and it gave me a head ache. At last you have made up my mind delete TV from my comp GOOD BY TO ALL IT WAS GOOD ONCE. LOL... "delete TV from my comp..." BYE BYE OLD MAN! Door, arse, etc...
The only thing that kept me coming back to the forum was the ticker that allowed you to filter most of the daily 20 pages down to a few and then usually I would select one of the ticker items and then click on one or two of them. I would then click on mark all items read. Now I am not able to find a mark all read option and the ticker is gone. dam_n if I want to click through 20 pages today and then 40 tomorrow. Will try it a couple more days and if not resolved I will quit my daily visits. Goodbye then. IMHO it's a refreshing change and if some of the whiners here surfed on other forums (broaden your horizons?), they would realize that this is the newer, better way to go. It's got a few bugs that will be ironed out quickly. But who (apart from bdenner) browses their OLD messages? Eight months back? That is seriously sad. The only drawback I see is for those in Nakhon Nowhere with low-baud dialup or carrier pigeon connections. But, the upside is they will not be whining much on TV either. I have found an Aldis Lamp in the attic; PM me if you want it. Edited by NanLaew, 2011-12-22 08:20:05. #59Posted 2011-12-22 08:41:00
Can we have a template/Skin for the old style forum please?
This new skin is awful. #60Posted 2011-12-22 08:41:41
Two issues:
(1) In the list of forum thread titles (e.g. http://www.thaivisa....m-support-desk/, there is no option to jump to a page higher than "Next." In the old version there were options to jump to 1, 2, 3, 4, ... last, next. Now, just "Next" (1a) Related: clicking on "Load more topics" doesn't seem to be functional (2) Going to a user's profile to view their posts only shows five posts. (Presumably it shows that five more recent posts, but not sure) #61Posted 2011-12-22 08:50:01
Hate it, difficult to speed scan - everything now just a blur so it's really difficult to speed scan.
Hate the avatar on the right at the top level everywhere - totally un-necessary vanity feature. Now it's nearly Impossible to quickly pick out the different types of threads/posts and thus to easy differentiate between them. Lost my spellcheck .. grrrrrr. Don't like the preview a post being hidden and extra clicks I know from previous upgrades that once you guys change that's it - but this time really no like, no like, no like ................... #62Posted 2011-12-22 08:50:07
Forgot a third (& edited to add: fourth & fifth) issue:
(3) On the list of forum thread titles, in Opera & Chrome there is a very faint grey line separating the topics, in IE9, there is no such line. I would request (a) the separator line be a little darker and ( Hmmm. Even though I unchecked "Enable emoticons," it still converts b + ) to a smiley. (Oh, just noticed that in the compose reply box that applying a font style no longer displays the style tags, but formats the text in the compose reply box. Not sure if I like that, or not....) (4) On the list of forum thread titles, there is now an added line with information on who/when the thread was started. That info is still available by hovering over the thread title, so why add an additional line of clutter? (5) On the forum list, the first column is rather narrow, making for very short text lines. Maybe, rather than fixed pixel length, use a % of available screen width? e.g. On my 1050px wide screen, see how everything is squished up in the first column:

What happened ? every upgrade [new look] gets worse and more difficult to use...... Why ?
I have 5 Topics open since 6:45 this is the 1st one to open...!!!!!! Now takes 2 hours to open a topic on ThaiVisa. Something is very wrong here... I DO NOT have all the adverts thankfully what I do have is loads of empty boxes all over the place #64Posted 2011-12-22 08:54:13
Too much white!
#65Posted 2011-12-22 08:58:29
Bloody Orrid. The Contrast is completely wrong.
#67Posted 2011-12-22 09:07:31
This new format is quite a shock. TV is the third thing I do after making coffee and checking emails and I thought my PC was having a problem this morning.
I don't like the missing drop down at the bottom of each topic page to allow me to quickly go to another topic area. The rest I can endure and get used to,,,,,,,ads are no problem for me as I have a way to ignore them. #68Posted 2011-12-22 09:12:14
Overall the new look has potential I think, if a few of these kinks can be ironed out. There are some nice new features.
A few bugs though:
#70Posted 2011-12-22 09:17:20
Contrast is a bit tricky esp the replies box.
When I click on my content, I do not see anything even though I have many posts. Everything else looks good. You know people don't like change -- esp old people, so you'll get mostly complaints. But, it's alright. #71#72Posted 2011-12-22 09:30:25
Yikes! so much wasted space. The thread titles take about 3 times more screen space than before, the preview button is awful, before you could just hover the mouse over the thread title and see a preview of the text, now is click... waaaaaaaitttt... intrusive preview panel pushes its way in and then you have to click on the button again to hide it. Its an awful waste of time, definitely a few steps backwards.
Mostly it bores me to have to scroll up and down so much. Would be nice to have the option to switch to a more compact display. #73Posted 2011-12-22 09:33:22
Don't like the skin and there's far too many ads.
As well as Thai Visa I use another up and coming Thailand expat forum where there's no advertising allowed and the skin is a beautiful dark colour. #74Posted 2011-12-22 09:37:18
Logged on to the mobile view through my Android phone earlier and all looked a little better, some ironing out of the sizing of the text and icons under the menu button at the top of the page needed and that seemed to be good.
Found this thread and all the moaning, thought it might be a little worse here. Logged on and I don't see the problem. OK, I don't allow google ads to be displayed on my computer so I don't see a million ads, but to me everything seems fine. Will have to get myself an avatar though. Oooh! Just got a message pop up over screen that someone has just posted a new reply..... If I click show will my posting disappear or will the new post be opened in a new tab/window? Too late, gone now. #75Posted 2011-12-22 09:44:55
The bigger fonts will be welcomed by many, especially those with vision problems.
Unfortunately, the blow up gives the impression of more ads and a "busier" workspace. Perhaps reducing the font size by 10% will fix that perception. |
