I would like some basic advice about the range of GPS devices. I have never owned a GPS device and know nothing about the products available.

I don't have a car.
I don't have an internet mobile phone link.
I don't have an iPod or Android or any other type of smartphone.

I do have a motorbike.
I enjoy driving around Thailand.
I like trekking in National Parks.
I like maps.
I can read Thai.

I would like something cheap and basic.
A hand-held device is required.
The device should show roads and landmarks.
The device should update automatically or be able to be updated automatically.
I would be happy to buy a no-name brand.
I would like to know distances, both by road and as the crow flies.
I would like to know where I am.
I would like to know how to get to places.

Brand, model, price and any other advice would be very welcome.

Thanks.

OK, no takers.

I discovered myself that (dodgy?) Chinese "Blueberri's" start from 3,000 Baht whilst the only Garmin I could find was 14,900 Baht, the 3790 model.

Updates are free for a year and after that cost 400 Baht (Blueberri) or 450 Baht (Garmin).

Garmin nuvi 1250 sells for 3900 baht in Thailand complete with Thailand Street Map.

Thanks for the reply.

Do you know any shops in Chonburi or Rayong province that sell them? Se-ed Sri Racha only had one model left, I mean down to the last item on the shelf, and it was 14,900 Baht. 3,900 is more my budget. I don't need a 14,900 Baht model. I wouldn't use it enough to justify the expenditure.

Eagle GPS, Chiang Mai will EMS you a Garmin nuvi 1250 right to your door step. Many posters have used their mail service to purchase a GPS. Contact them here: http://www.eaglegps.co.th/. This is a "cheap and basic" brand-name Personal Navigation Device (PND) that easily fits in your pocket and can be hand carried. Other models would be better suited for trekking, but cost more.
