I have read a few articles and looked at a few brands of GPS and seriously I have no idea which one is the right one for me...
I would like GPS that covers all of Thailand, has a clear screen with maps in English/Thai also with English and Thai language What is the best available ( make and model ) here in Thailand? Thanks people... #2Posted 2011-12-30 09:56:28
Try this shop, bought my Novi 205W there (discontinued) and are very happy with it. English and Thai in it, best legal map of Thailand and you can update the maps every year if you want (at a prize). Think first update is for free.

does Samsung Galaxy phones work as navigators at all in TH?

Any of the Garmin nuvi models with a dual language Thailand Street Map installed will keep you from getting lost while driving in Thailand. The Garmin nuvi 2465 is a good mid range model. Best available does not mean better navigation, just more bells and whistles.

The only problem though is lack of proper Thai addresses, that can be very frustrating. Posted with Thaivisa App http://apps.thaivisa.com #6Posted 2011-12-30 12:31:43
@Katabeachbum
My Galaxy S2 bought at MBK has SpeedNavi on it which works good. I also put on Google Maps which is fair. I use my phone now instead of my Garmin Nuvi. Posted with Thaivisa App http://apps.thaivisa.com Edited by mojaco, 2011-12-30 12:33:27. #7Posted 2011-12-30 12:46:36

You can buy a Nuvi 1250 Garmin with the latest up to date map that will work much better than any smart phone. It's hard to beat a simple to use Garmin for a price of 3,900 baht. An 1,100 baht basic cell phone will likely have better audio properties than a 20,000 baht smart phone. Up to you.

Use the Southeast Asia maps of TomTom, both in English and Thai. The devices are not (yet) for sale in Thailand, but you can get them in Malaysia. Maps cover Thailand.

Of course one doesn't buy a Galaxy S2 for it having GPS . . . that is a side benefit to having a 3G+ phone to tether to a laptop as well as it being a full-blown computer running Android with apps more and more being created. But I don't use my Nuvi now for touring since the phone is adequate enough. As for sound quality just use a good quality dual purpose bluetooth earphones. If one already has a mobile phone that fully meets one's needs but cannot run GPS, then it makes sense to buy a dedicated GPS. #13Posted 2011-12-30 18:05:46

Are there any retailers for Garmin in Phuket?

Posted with Thaivisa App http://apps.thaivisa.com Thanks guys on the Galaxy advice, time to get one I guess KBB there is a thread on the SG2 running in mobile devices and in it (it has got a bit long) are some specific comments about different navigation software available - free and paid for. From memory Speed Navi was not very highly rated so surprised to see Mojaco's comments. I tried to use it the other week on an SG2 and gave up in the end - it may be fine if you really take the time to delve into it which I have not done. 1. Any opinions on comparisons of Garmin vs. Besta GPS units?
e.g. Garmin Nuvi 2465 (8700B) vs. Besta Learner 5+(7900B). Both 4.3" screens 2. Sales guy for Besta at B2S (Central Fest) said that service for this brand is much better than for Garmin. It appears to have good features that I certainly don"t need. Is serviceability important for these units? 3. Is it better to purchase the the Garmin Nuvi 2465 (8700B) 4.3" vs. Garmin 1250 (3900B) 3.5" screen thanks for input #18Posted 2012-01-30 12:27:51
Why do the hand held units cost twice as much in Thailand as abroad, but the car fitted units are around the same price?
