I returned the Navman (mentioned in a previous thread) and purchased a new Garmin Nuvi 40 whilst on a recent trip to Australia.
Unsure if there is a similar Garmin in Thailand, possibly sold under a different model number? Here is the Nuvi 40 https://buy.garmin.c...D=401&pID=92773 Now trying to find out the best way to locate Thailand map for it, whether CD or preferably Micro SD card map. Any advice appreciated Thank you. #2Posted 2012-01-02 19:58:08
The best map would be the Thailand Street Map, version 12.0 available from Garmin dealers in Thailand. It usually is supplied on a CD with instructions for loading the map file to GPS internal memory. The map can be transferred to a microSD memory card. You should be aware that Thai junction view usually does not work with foreign origin Nuvi GPS units such as your Nuvi 40.
If you are still in Australia, Garmin sells their Southeast Asia map, including Thailand, on microSD memory card. This is not the same map as available from ESRI (GPSsociety) Thailand. Edited by InterestedObserver, 2012-01-02 20:23:09. #3Posted 2012-01-03 10:22:37

I've just bought a v11.1 map for my Garmin nuvi 1490 from http://www.eaglegps.co.th/ while I was in Chiang Mai last week. It cost just 1000 baht and they put it on a micro SD card for me. I think they said the v12 was 2500 baht, but they would have to order it (with my Garmin ID number) and it would take about a week and I was only in Chiang Mai for a couple of days, so, as they said there was very little difference between the v11.1 and v12 versions, I decided to take the older version. My European maps are still installed as well.

FWIW, I added TSM 12.01 (dual) to my microSD card in a Garmin nuvi 1300 from the U.S. I had to de-select the U.S. maps to get a satellite lock here in Thailand. Then everything worked fine. took me awhile to figure that out.

Are you able to switch between the TSM v12.01 [dual] Thai and English language maps with the US purchased nuvi 1300? Edited by InterestedObserver, 2012-01-04 16:15:39. #9Posted 2012-01-04 16:28:11

With the Thai OS nuvis purchased in Thailandl you change text language to Thai, touch Tools > Settings > Language > Text Language > Thai. #11Posted 2012-01-04 22:29:09

My U.S. Garmin nuvi 1300 is a veritable "Tower of Babel" with 35 language options including Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Chinese (2x), but no Thai. I guess I need to flash 'Singapore firmware' or maybe the Thai firmware. But then I wonder if I will lose English? I haven't taken the time (yet) to get into the system. #12Posted 2012-01-06 18:28:47

What folder name, 'Garmin' or 'Map', did use on the microSD card AND what map file name, 'gmapprom.img' or 'gmapsupp.img', did you use inside the folder? Until I de-selected the U.S. map I could not get a satellite lock. As soon as I de-selected the U.S. map I got a satellite lock. I don't know what to say. I can't find any reference to satellite lock being dependent on the map selected. Just what are you calling satellite lock? The GPS certainly will not work off a U.S. road map in Thailand. Garmin nuvis are not intended to display multiple maps at the same time, so don't expect to be able to select more than one map at a time. #15Posted 2012-01-08 10:37:49

Thanks, that's more or less what I was trying to say with my initial post here on this thread. I think I have the U.S. map on the root, and added the TSM map to the SD card. Initially I was unable to to get a satellite lock, multiple messages like "trouble satellites found, continue searching". When I went into "tools, settings, map, info" both TSM and CN North America were checked. When I unchecked CN North America NT 2012.10 [1] Lower 49 States, and left Thailand StreetMap V12.01 NT [Dual] checked my unit locked on satellites (5 bars) and displayed my location, and has been working as expected. #16Posted 2012-01-08 10:51:19
I save the maps on my hard drive and change as necessary - some maps can be d/l from torrent sites so you can try before you buy - if you know what you are doing. The latest Garmin seems to come with English and Thai but previously one had to download ENG or Thai.
iGenie one has to hard reset the unit and choose English to type English destinations etc. www.gadgetrend.com in Bangkok is one I use or go direct to ESRI in the Standard Charter building Sathorn. |
