It is amazing the people that post incorrect information on forums. Generally speaking, you cannot put a lighter in your checked luggage, but can carry (usually one) on board with you. I have had excess lighters taken from me, but China (3 years ago) has been the only place that did not allow any at all, in my extensive travels. I once had a lighter confiscated in Hong Kong. It was in my pocket. Security also removed and kept the batteries from a small travel alarm clock in my carry-on bag. I think it's up to the person doing the checking. Whatever you do, don't argue with them. They'll pull you off the flight in an instant.

Thanks to all who replied. I think I will carry the lighter in my pocket and that should be fine.
I am flying by Jetstar next week and I think I got my confirmation that it's ok to carry a butane lighter onboard and not hidden inside a checked luggage. This from their website on dangerous goods- Smokers are permitted to carry Safety matches (one small packet) or a cigarette lighter. These are only permitted to be carried in your pocket (not in your carry-on or checked baggage). Passengers are reminded that smoking in the aircraft at any time is strictly prohibited. Cheers! would someone explain why I cant carry scissors or a nail file on a plane ( Too dangerous ! ) ? Because they are anxious of me. Once one security began to play with MY little nail clipper (swiss made). I at once slapped his hand and took it away. He did not like me any more and disappeared... |
